Well, two weeks ago I was let go from my job. Not a great way to start the summer. Surprisingly I haven't been drinking very much beer lately, which is a good thing for my waistline.

I wasn't really upset though, because I was bored and miserable at this job, and it showed. It just wasn't the right fit and I just kept putting off the decision to leave. I guess I just felt bad to leave and wanted to give them a chance. At least this way I have some paid time off and it has now forced me to look into something better. This week I'm actively looking for the next career step.

I helped out with a a week long karate camp last week, so that was a very active week, plus I came out for 2 adult classes in the evening. So I did karate as a full time job last week. I'm off the the gym now.

Sorry to hear about the job. I hope you're doing well. It's great that you're feeling pretty positive about it. You're completely right in your attitude - if you aren't happy in your work, it's really best not to have that job. Good luck with your search for the next step! :hug2:
Man, helping out with a karate camp sounds awesome! I bet that was great. :)

Hi there!
yes, great attitude--but it's not the point of life to be stuck in a miserable job, although I have been there and done that! (right now I'm cool). Have a great class session and hope to hear from you soon!

way to be positive about it..

If you can find it -- grab a copy of What Color is Your Parachute - doesnt really matter what year - it's a great guide for job hunters and job changers andmight give you some ideas of what to do next...

Hey 12pack!
How have you been? I haven't been around much lately. I was just browsing through the site and wanted to come see how you were doing. I know the feeling about the job. I was laid off from a factory two years ago. I hated the job but loved the money and because of the money I couldn't get myself to leave. I was scared at first but soon realized that it was the best thing that could of happened to me. I went back to school and I work in a doctors office now. It's sooo much better than that hot, stinky factory. I'm glad you're open to try new things. You just might find something that you truely enjoy. At least I hope that is what happens. I wish you luck on whatever road life takes you down.

Hi everyone...I haven't dropped by lately, sorry.

I had three weeks off to spend with the family. One week of it was a karate camp, so that was a tiring week. I've started a new job (and I'm into my third week now) and it's fantastic. It's waaaaay better than my last job, and the idea is for me to acquire this place in a few years, so that's even more exciting. So I guess I'm doing well.

I also started back into the gym regularly - three weeks now. I had joined a gym (after many years of living in the gym, followed by many years of not going to a gym) in April, worked out for 3 weeks, and then my neck was so messed up I didn't go back for 2 months. Anyway, now I'm in the gym at lunch 2 days a week, with a simple routine with compound exercises.

Day 1:
Squat: 135x8 warmup, 185 x 8-10, 225x5 (3 sets)
Bench: 170x5 (5 sets)
Standing BB military press: 95x5 (5 sets)

Day 2:
Deadlift: 135x8 warmup, 185x6-8, 225x5 (3 sets)
Bend over BB row: 135x5 (5 sets)
Lat pulldowns: 5sets of 5, varying weight

My bench press is pathetic compared to what it used to be...but my squat and deadlift are as good as they've ever been.

The first week I was feeling fantastic, so I deadlifted 275 (previous best was about 230 or 240). I tried 305 but didn't get it. I was pretty excited about the 275...so that motivated me a lot.

Funny thing is, I seem to be gaining a lot of weight since I've been lifting. I weigh myself after the workout, just for curiosity, and the first week I was weighing in at 213 and the last workout I was at 218. I wouldn't think I'd be gaining muscle that fast...and I don't think my diet has changed much...it's mostly gotten better over the last 3 weeks. We'll see what happens. I'm going to day after work. I would think getting back into the gym I may be able to put on a pound or two of muscle each month for the first few months, but 5 lbs in 3 weeks can't all be muscle.

Oh cool!

I'll have to catch up on your diary and read all about it! I hope it went well! I did see that you got a bit of a sunburn though... :(

Glad to have you back! Congratulations on the new job, and on the karate camp!!!

I think initial weight gain with heavy lifting is normal--your weight should start to plummet next week, I bet--well, you can always ask Steve ;)

Have a great day! :)

Thanks Curvie - things seem to be going well.

I've been in the gym twice a week for 5 weeks now and its feeling really good. I'm making some strenght gains, and it feels like I may eventually get all my old strength back! I've also been getting to karate regularly as well - usually 2-3 classes a week, but I'll be there for hopefully 5 classes a week for the next month. I have a tournament next weekend, and then a belt grading in about a month, so I definitely have to kick it up a notch or two. After next month I'll be one grading away from my brown belt, which will be nice to get.

My knee surgery was scheduled for 2 weeks from today, but I've decided to put it off. I don't feel any knee instability or pain at all. I'm kicking hard and high (head kicks) and they feel fine. So...if I start having some problems with the knee, then I can call and get back on the surgery schedule. I really don't want to give up the karate and weight-training momentum right now as it's all going well.

Fat loss is going nowhere! Most of the time I eat well, but I've been slipping a little here and there (no big deal) and I haven't been drinking as much beer as I was a few months ago (which is good)...but I've gained a few pounds in the last month (weight training contributed to this as I can feel that my muscles are getting bigger). With 7 workouts a week for the next month, I should be dropping some weight by this time next month.

After two workouts yesterday (weights at lunch and karate in the evening), I'm tired and a little sore. Today is a rest day, although I'll try to do some stretching and maybe a little core work tonight. Tomorrow night is hopefully karate and again on Saturday (I may do a couple of classes on Saturday).

Food today is pretty decent:

Breakfast: Greens shake, Bran buds with milk (wholly fibre intake batman) and a protein shake (whey protein and some milk).
Morning snack: Peach, almonds
Lunch: Ham & havarti on bran bread, large salad (baby spinach, red peppers & broccoli)
Afternoon snack: Homemade hummus and 1 pita (store was all out of the whole-wheat variety)
Dinner: Not sure yet...dinner at the in-laws tonight.

With the extra protein at breakfast, I wasn't as hungry for my morning snack. I need to get some more protein powder for additional shakes for breakfast and other time when I need to supplement my protein.

My simple hummus recipe - 2 cans of chick peas, 3-4 cloves of garlic, olive/flax oil, some water, lemon juice and some salt & pepper. Yummy! It turned out really good this batch.

My Deck!

After going on about building my deck a couple of months back...I forgot to post a picture! So...here it is.

Wow! The deck looks gorgeous! But I thought the deal was that we got to see you working on the deck with no shirt on. Damn men... you're all a bunch of teases.
So you're working out like a madman. The weight will, inevitably, come off when you're being that active. I would agree that the few pounds you've gained are probably from muscle building.

Hey Sunny - thanks. We're pretty happy with the deck...but we didn't get any pictures of me working on it....when I get into good shape...I'll do some poses and post them...lol

Back from the dead

It's been a while since I've been here...I seem to keep going away for a while and then coming back. I guess I just go through phases where sometimes I want to write and share and other times I get somewhat withdrawn.

So after about a year of being stuck at 216lbs...I finally seem to have broken the rut. I'm now down to about 207'ish, which is nice...only like 7lbs to get back under 200 - so that's prety cool.

I started making some additional changes to my daily diet. I bought the Precision Nutrition binder from John Berardi and following it is working well (although I haven't been strickly following the rules).

I've had a hard time this week though. A bit too much beer consumption, but I'm very stressed.

Earlier in the week I accidentally discovered something that my wife did that made me extremely upset. She did what she did and then repeatedly lied about it. That started a whole big arguement and discussion, and now we are separating. It's our 11th anniversary in a few weeks...but I guess we've both been unhappy for a while. We're going to try an make this amicable, especially since we have a 5yr old son.

Anyone interested in a divorced accountant?
