Hello, I just joined here recently and I enjoy reading through the forums and gaining some new insight to weight loss. So I hope to stick with this and motivate myself to do better.

I’ve always had a weight problem since the summer before 4th grade. I let myself that summer and gained some pounds. From there on it’s been a continuation of weight gain every year. I think by 6th grade I weighted about 128 pounds and by 10th grade 228 pounds and by graduation I went to 270 pounds (2 years ago). Last year I went up 292 pounds and I said that’s it. So last year around the end of May I started walking and eating around 2000 calories. In the first 4 weeks I lost 17 pounds and the next 4-6 weeks I lost 10 pounds more (to 265 pounds). Shortly after that I stopped losing weight and I became discouraged and eventually stopped walking. I gradually started returning back to old eating habits and by around March of this year I went back up to 292 pounds (that's like the magic number I guess).

That was the first time I have had success losing any kind of weight but I wasn’t able to maintain it too well. The thing that bugs me the most about it is I actually knew I was gaining the weight but I did nothing to stop it I was too lazy and unmotivated. This past month (May) I did something that helped me gain a good amount of confidence that I’ve never had before (I don’t think I’ll mention it, it’s not that big of a deal). Anyway after that, I started watching my portions and started cutting down on some not so good food. I lost 7 pounds in May without really needing to exercise. At the beginning of this month I started walking again but I also incorporated some strength training and other activities that I didn’t do last year. So these first 3 weeks I’ve lost 7 pounds without really going all out with the exercising and strict eating. I’m taking it slower this time around and I’m gradually getting into the routine. And to be perfectly honest it’s been really easy for me! I remember waking up last year and not wanting to go walk early because how hard it was for me to walk that much. This year I don’t want to wake up early not because I don’t want to walk but because I want some more sleep! Lol So I actually really enjoy it now. So i’m at 278 right now and i’m ready to keep it going.

So I started jogging yesterday and I also did some today. It's the couch to 5k run thing, for me it's like the bed to couch to 5k run. lol I usually add a little walking and jogging after the 20 minute routine.

Yesterday (6/25) I tried to finish the walking/jogging in less than 35 minutes and once I clicked stop on the stop watch it was 34:59, got it by 1 second. Today (6/26) it was like 34:20ish, I don't quite remember. Woo

I've been really getting into the strength training, I don't really have a solid routine, but I have to make sure to get the technique and motion down correctly (so i've been working on that).

When it comes to food i'm no pro as to what's good and bad for me but i've been learning a lot lately. Knowledge=power. I moved away from the white bread to wheat, rest in peace, wheat's not bad though.

A few weeks ago when I started exercising I was really sluggish, I feel like I have more energy now and more desire to continue this journey. The biggest difference between this year and last year is that it doesn't feel like a diet this time, it feels like another normal everyday routine.

Hey V...

Just wanted to say hi and introduce myself. I'm Kristi, another young whippersnapper. I just graduated from high school, so I'm even a little younger than you.

You seem like you have a firm grasp on how to go about this weight loss thing! Congrats on all of your small successes :)30 second time drop, no white bread, more energy, etc.). It's these things that will push you, and eventually get you to your goal!

I'll be back!

Hey I read your story and can SO relate. I've only had two successful times of losing weight and like you, when I hit that wall that lasted for months I eventually quit and packed the pounds back on. 280 USED to be my set point I always returned to but unfortunately now its alot more. I'm at 328 now and have been trying to lose about 20 more lbs before I start walking because I have a bad leg and knee from a car accident and I weigh SO much for a 5'1 inch tall frame.

I definitely knew what you meant when you said how hard it was for you to walk that much. On my worst days my weight makes me feel like my back muscles have concrete blocks tied to them that I'm draggin around and it can be agonizing. But after reading these forums I've seen alot of people in the same boat as me and I know I just have to start small and build up. I've been considering starting on my treadmill at first and just starting out with 10-15 minutes.

Anyway glad to have you here :) Keep posting!

:seeya:Hi there! Welcome to the forum! You sound very determined to get down to a healthy weight, and recognize the importance of exercise and changing your eating habits. Keep digging around for food info and you'll come up with a plan that works for you. Just remember whatever you decide on, it needs to be sustainable.

Best wishes on your journey:auto:; looking forward to updates!

Cheers
ABBA

Thanks for the kind words!

Kristi,
Nice to see another young whippersnapper. lol I'm just trying to keep it up, and trying to learn from old mistakes.

douknowjello,
I'm sorry to hear about the accident. It must be really tough coming back to workout and get motivated again. Slow and steady is all it takes. I know you can do it!

ABBAgirl,
The eating plan that I had last year was terrible, I felt so deprived. I'm doing a lot better now with food choices and gradually getting into a ..good uh.. eating plan. lol I can only hope one day i'll have as much success as you!

So I went to walk/jog this morning and I got a 31:29 time, much better than the other two.. so i'm stoked about that.

[rant]I usually go around 6 or 7 in the morning, the problem with that is that there's usually a lot of folks (mostly truck drivers) heading to work or delivering stuff and they drive so crazy!. I almost got into a wreck with one of those trucks yesterday because the truck was trying to beat the red light and it gave a really short left turn.. i'm pretty lucky to have stopped a couple of feet back from those white lines. It would have hit me if I was closer to the light. The other day I was going to reverse out into the street after finishing my walk and there was car to the right of me parked. So it makes it difficult to look to the right side to reverse out, I saw car a from the distance coming down and I figured it was going to turn left on the street I was getting out of, so I decided to wait for it to pass (since I was in no hurry). It ends up zipping right behind me like at 50mph! Today, I found another route home though the back streets. And there's stop signs on every corner of those streets. So I had made a complete stop and I was about to go and this car races pass the stop sign! If I would've gone sooner it probably would have t bone me.. I'm thinking of walking to a school nearby but with my luck... lol [/end rant]

Awesome on the walking, you're ahead of me on that. And so glad you're ok...with that much hassle I think you're idea might be a good one. I get road rage in those extreme situations and the last thing you need is that much hassle and being stressed out by the time you get there to walk. Plus me personally, there's some days when I was in a pissy mood I'd not go just because I'd have to deal with that kind of traffic. Keep up the good work and thanks for stoppin by my journal yesterday :)

You must live in the city...when I walk I worry more about stepping on the ants on the sidewalk. haha

I love working out in the morning. You can go through the whole day without that guilty-because-I-should-be-doing-exercise feeling. ;)

Have a good day! :)

You make a good point Witt...honestly I'd never thought about that. I think I just got inspired...starting out each day not having to worry if I'm going to do it cuz it's already done! Plus if I do it early enough I may not know what hit me, lol. Thanks for the good ideas!

douknowjello,
Thanks for the good words! It's not much as a hassle as it seems but I just kinda brush it off, I won't let those incident's ruin my day. I still gotta go. haha

Kristi,
I live in the city, it's not like really huge city but the park is located near the interstate and service roads. So on the way back I gotta watch out for those crazy coffee drinking folks. lol

And that's why I do it in the morning.. just to get it over with and I don't have to worry about my conscience eating slowly at me during day for not going (maybe I want that though.. it may burn a few more calories jk).

I still can't believe i'm going through with this.. haha

Yesterday was my day off for workouts, although I wanted to do some stuff, I refrained from doing so. I'm sort of glad I did, I needed some rest.

Today, I was going to go walk at the uni, but it rained all day yesterday and it rained all night and all morning today... so I didn't go. If there wasn't lightning I would've gone. So hopefully everything goes well tomorrow morning.

I'm also thinking of picking some good stuff from the grocery store tomorrow, i'm still writing a list for that. The only problem i'm having lately is I seem to be eating less than I should, so I need to get those calories up higher. I'm also having my meals too far apart.. so I have to work on having them closer together.

Tomorrow is my weigh in day, i'm exited about that. :coolgleamA:

You have sidewalks where you live? I have to drive for miles to find a sidewalk......

(I'm not complaining....) :)

Couldn't go jog this morning since there's been constant raining all night and today. I'm sure if it does stop, the trail I go on will still be flooded, i'll check it out tonight or tomorrow and see how it looks. So I substitute it with taebo and jump roping this morning. haha I'll probably do some strength training later if I don't get busy.

I lost 2 pounds this week not bad.. and i've been weighing myself with my shoes on, so I took them off it was like almost 1.5 more plus the 2. Even though I will count it I won't actually count it.. if you know what I mean? Moral victory denied. lol :angelsad2:

GREAT job V, 2 pounds is awesome. You gotta be so happy :D Hope you don't mind me asking...I haven't seen it posted anywhere or I missed it but I don't know if you are a guy or gal? Thanks again for all your support lately :) I appreciate it.

Any loss is a victory V!

2 pounds every week soon adds up - plus it's a healthy rate to lose at. But I know what you mean, I'd take the 3.5 over 2 any day! lol

I hate it when the weather doesn't cooperate. It throws off everything. Whenever it used to rain or be too cold to run, I would run up and down my stairs a thousand times, or jump rope in my garage.

I'm a knuckle headed guy. lol

I haven't been doing so well this week.. i'm getting a little to comfortable with my routine and haven't ate so well. I'm not exactly eating over my calories but then again i'm not eating enough healthy food. I did a little better today I had breakfast within two hours of waking up (around 7) but I didn't get to come home to around 2 today and I just ate oatmeal for lunch. lol

I didn't run today either.. I just walked, sad thing is I walked less today than what I usually jog...:(

I also haven't had enough sleep lately... I don't feel really tired when I wake up early in the morning, which is why I go to the park so early. But as the day goes on it takes its toll. Physically my body is holding up great, mentally.. meh. lol I'm sure i'll get it together soon. It's all mind games!! haha

So this morning I did so much better, I got my time to 30:44, which is like 4 minutes better than when I started last week. I finished before 7, and my brother came by so I helped him clean the inside of his truck, we also went to starbucks and he got a drink and some roll, I passed on it of course. ;)

Happy 4th of July!
