Hi *V* and welcome (back). Statistically food is much more important for weightloss than exercise and in the long run it's the ONLY thing that works so you've got that going for you. I get bad shin splints as well but I find that they get less or even go away after about two weeks of clean eating (regardless of my weight). Walking's awesome even if you are slow but maybe swimming or biking would be possible for you as well?
