why water is so important for weight loss

The recent studies that I saw - stated that you do not have to necessarily drink water - other beverages are fine. Here is some information from CNN.com:
Beyond the tap: Many sources of water

You don't need to sip from your water bottle all day to satisfy your fluid needs. Your diet, including the beverages you drink, can provide a large portion of what you need. In an average adult diet, food provides about 20 percent of total water intake. The remaining 80 percent comes from beverages of all kinds.

Fruits and vegetables — besides being good sources of vitamins, minerals and fiber — contain lots of water. For example, oranges are 87 percent water, and cucumbers are 95 percent water. Milk, juice and other beverages also have large amounts of water. Conversely, dried fruits, nuts, grain products and baked goods generally contain less water.

I ususally drink diet green tea since green tea has so many positive benefits. Don't forget one of the other main reasons why water helps with weight loss - It keeps your hunger in check. Many time we are thirsty but mistake the feeling for being hungry.

Drinking Water

You are my hero! I always knew it was good to drink alot of water (and that most people don't drink nearly enough), but I've never seen so much good information together in one place.

Thanks for the help! :)

I tried the water thing for about 4 days and I GAINED weight!! WTF? I was also peeing like crazy.. so I dont' think it was water-weigh.. hmm.. ever heard of anyone actually gaining weight from drinking water. Is it possible the body gets accustomed to less water and learns to funcion better on less? Also, in my family, women retain water like crazy. When I was drinking lots of water, my legs swelled up and so did my upper arms and tummy!.. WHen I stopped and drank less water, the swelling went down.. anyone else ever get this?

What is your sodium intake like? If you take in alot of sodium that could be the problem. Try increasing water and decreasing sodium. I noticed a post on this thread where someone said that other fluids count the same as water and that is simply not correct. If you drink fluids with caffeine, sugar, or sodium. those things will counteract your body's ability to use the water properly. Since we are made of water, it only makes sense that we have to drink water. Kidneys don't work properly, you can easily become dehydrated, and by not drinking water, you will retain water! The body will always try to save itself! As for gaining weight when you increased the water, like I said, try decreasing sodium caffeine and sugar at the same time and give it at least a week! See if that helps. I know when I cut down on the coffee it helped.

Could someone give me a tip or two on how to switch from being a total pop addict to drinking just water? Basically the only thing diet pops have in them is sodium, and tons of it at that! Not to mention the caffine, which is its own beast. But the thing is, I love the carbonated feeling in my mouth, and the little zing of taste with it too - plain water just seems so... PLAIN!

I've tried switching to just water before but couldn't keep it up because my mouth just felt so - this sounds weird, but its the best I can describe it - fuzzy, from not having the carbonation in there.

Beagle, there are lots of fizzy waters that have lemon or orange flavor or other flavors, they have no bad things like nutra-sweet, only water, fizz and slight fruity flavor, canada dry makes it, mendota springs, la croix, lots of them out there.. Good luck.

Does drinking soda really make that big of a difference? i mean i love my soda, diet of course, but if the sodium is making me keep A LOT of water in my body, then i would cut back. I just don't really see the evidence that soda makes that big of a difference. You guys have any input?

Sorry guys/gals but I would like to know the formula for converting Ounces into litres. I drink 2-4 litres of water a day (well should be), and you people all talk of ounces and I don't know how to convert that. Thanks

Yikes!

I better start drinking water! I mean I actually knew this already but when it's visually out there for me to see then I will drink it. I am a busy girl, usually, so I forget about taking care of myself. I don't usually start drinking any water until I am dehydrated. Smart, huh? :( Okay... I have to keep this in mind. Now that I am a new member to this site you all will help me keep it real! Thanks for this post. I need it! ;)

as a biology student; the reason why you pee is because the water that is coming out is actually full of salt. The reason one should drink alot of water is because the salt that is stuck in the kidneys.

Distilled Water, the Absolute Best of H2O

Don't pay high prices for little bottles of bottled water, that are most often worse than your tap water ran through a carbon taste filter. Buy distilled water, by the gallon. 99 cents or less at almost any grocery store. 100% pure, it is hands down the best tasting, you will guzzle it like it has flavor. And the purity itself does actually bring its own flavor. And beagle, you could maybe use some crystal light mix or something to spice it up if you wanted, but its really best you get away from the whole carbonated soda thing.

Distilled water is boiled, then the steam is collected and bottled. All the impurities remain in the boiler, so 100% H2O is the final product. Filtered water still contains lots of trace impurities that make it taste bad. No wonder people don't like drinking regular water!

hi all.
to me drinking plenty of water is very important especially when on diet.
i drink at least 2 litre (8 glasses) but usually i drink 3 litre of water in a day (12 glasses).

i have one tip... if u dont really like plain water... u can squeeze some lemon juice....(do not add sugar!) ive tried this but i prefer plain water.

What an interesting topic! I never used to drink water before I started exercising again. Since that, water is so much more appealing for some reason! I bought a 34 oz/1000 mL water bottle (too bad it doesn't fit in my elliptical water bottle holder), and fill it up and drink it for lunch. If I finish, I re-fill it and drink some more and it does the job!

I often have a problem as to WHEN to drink and I think sometimes I don't drink enough. When I wake up in the morning, my mouth is utterly dry and I know it's because I didn't drink enough water before I went to bed! So I think drinking a few glasses before hitting the sack is a great idea and will probably solve the problem. I also have a problem when it comes to exercising - they say to drink before you get thirsty, and that's hard for me, so I just drink it periodically throughout the workout.

Thank you all for the good info on water! I never knew...

Actully it does make a big difference. I use to drink a diet pepsi every night until I got this in a news letter from Beachbody. I quote:

Diet soda. Like most people, you probably think, "Diet soda contains no calories or sugar, so I can drink as much as I want and lose weight, right?" Wrong. Diet sodas are loaded with artificial sweeteners that convince the brain that it's real sugar, so the body releases insulin to help metabolize the artificial sweetener. Since there's no real sugar present, the excess insulin performs its other task of signaling the body to store fat—not exactly great for your waistline

Now I only have a diet pepsi once in a blue moon as a treat. It has helped. I pretty much only drink water (but mostly because I don't like other things like jucie and such. I really like water), coffee in the morning on weekends some times. It has helped to cut it out of my diet.

Hope this helps answer you question.

Regardless of what you drink before bed, you will wake up dehydrated after 8 hours of sleep, thats a given. So you don't want to be flooding yourself with liquid before you goto bed and be waking up in the night having to use the bathroom and stuff. Just wake up thirsty, and pound a couple glasses to get your day started.
