why water is so important for weight loss

WONDERWOMAN TO THE RESCUE- bravo, I also agree with what you have said. I think at a certain number of lbs the increase changes or stays the same. Water means only simple water, when its juice it changes the way your body metabolizes it and takes much more time to pass through your system. Thanks so much , that's a keeper wonderwoman!!:)

Here is a little secret about water and weight loss that almost nobody talks about.

You need water for your body to burn fat. Here is the main reason; without water, your kidneys can not do their job properly and your liver must pitch in to help. While it's helping the kidneys, your liver can't burn as much fat, so some of the fat that would normally be used as fuel gets stored in your body instead.

Drinking more water lets the liver get back to its own job of turning fat into fuel.

this is true . water plays an important part in a person who is following a diet program . see for urselfon how can be so important . it was very helpful to me hope it will be for u also

Great to know! I always wondered why water was so important. I just thought it helped flush out the fat....as if it was as easy as that. But actually in a why I guess it does. Thanks for the post because now that I understand the importance I will probably drink more water. If not for me for my liver.

thanks!

More Interesting Water Information!

I was surfing around looking for more information on water and I found this to be of interest and so I am posting it here for all to check out.

How eight glasses a day keeps the fat off!

Water suppresses the appetite naturally and helps the body metabolize stored fat. Studies have shown that a decrease in water intake will cause fat deposits to increase. An increase in water intake can actually reduce fat deposits

Here's the reason why!

When your body is given less water than it needs it perceives the shortage as a threat to survival and will begin to retain every drop. Water reserves are stored in extra-cellular spaces (outside the cells). This water can show up as swollen feet, hands and legs.

Overweight people need more water than thin people. Larger people have larger metabolic loads. Since we know that water is the key to fat metabolism it makes sense that the overweight person needs more water to metabolize excess fat.

Water helps to maintain proper muscle tone which aids in proper muscle contraction and prevents dehydration. It also helps to prevent the sagging skin that usually follows weight loss. Shrinking cells are buoyed by water which plumps the skin and leaves it clear, healthy and resilient.

Water helps rid the body of waste. During weight loss the body has more waste to get rid of and all that metabolized fat must be shed. The water helps flush out this waste!

How much water is enough?

If you are a normal weight for your height, then on average you should drink 8, 8 oz. glasses of pure water every day.

If you are overweight you should take 1 additional glass for every 25 lbs. of excess weight you are trying to lose. The amount that you drink should be increased if you exercise, or if the weather is hot and dry.

Preferably, your drinking water should be taken cold. Cold water is absorbed more quickly into the system than warm water. Some evidence suggests that drinking cold water can actually burn calories.

The website suggests that to utilize water most efficiently during weight loss follow this schedule, however it seems a bit extreme to me. But if it helps it is worth it. So you spend most of your day in the washroom.

Morning: 1 Quart (32 ounces) of water over 30 minutes
Afternoon: 1 Quart (32 Ounces) of water over 30 minutes
Evening: 1 Quart (32 ounces) of water between 5-6 P.M

Quality Matters

Hi!

A couple of things...

1) If your diet is high in water, you don't need to drink as much. One of the recent Self/Shape/Fitness mags had a chart...ounces per serving (I don't read those, but they just happend to be where I get my hair cut :)

2) ALWAYS "treat" your tap water. At minimum, use a carbon filter, preferably pressed carbon block (Amway, interestingly, has a good one - NO, I don't sell it).

Right now I use a distiller, under $100, and it leaves about a teaspoon of some smelly yellow/brown, possibly mineralish residue. I have seen this in NJ, and now in VA. I have my own theories about what this residue is, but you don't want to know- drug residue, and 'other' contaminants from upstream, let's just say.

With either of these methods, I believe you can stay under $0.10 per gallon, if you shop carefully. Ideally, do both.

There is published, peer reviewed research in respected journals like Lancet relating drinking tap water to bladder cancer.

For one reference: http://seer.cancer.gov/studies/epidemiology/study12.html
"Exposure to chlorination byproducts in drinking water supplies, a common environmental exposure, was associated with increased risk."

OH, and, when you factor in the pure(ish) water you get for free, organic produce seems a little cheaper.

Drink to your health,
K

Water weight

It is true that water is essential. In healthy individuals too much water acts as a diuretic and in essence working as many herb supplements and some medicines. However, too much water is also dangerous in the sense that it can cause abnormalities in the electrolites (i.e low potassium, low magnesium and low sodium) that can be harmful. Those who have this problems feel tired/fatigue and often have muscle cramps.
The weight reduction properties of water is its diuretic effects. How much water to drink?? There is no set standard. It is a balance that the individual must find. As long as one feels well, one is drinking enough.
BTW soda/coffe/fruit drinks do not count as water.

LOL. I remember reading a book where the main character drank 8 gallons water a day because he was so paranoid of being dehydrated. Here in southern California because of the chlorination I'm satisfied with a meager 8 glasses!

Food for thought.

Each week, my bariatrics doctor provides me a new 'lesson'. My lesson last week was on water. Maybe you all have already have heard this but here is some of the hand-out lesson that I found interesting:

The body needs about 80 ounces of total water each day for proper function. Our body produces about two cups of water as a by-product of metablism, most people just need to consume about another 64 ounces of additional fluid.

An ice cold gallon of water burns 150 calories simply in the heating of the water up to body temperature. That equals 16 pounds of fat burning a year.

Weight loss can increase the risk of kidney stones. Drinking extra water will prevent this tendency. As your body burns fat, fat soluble environmental toxins that we have accumulated over time are released into our blood. Extra water will carry those toxins into our urine to be excreted. So think of peeing all the time as releasing those toxins!

With all of this water that we are suppose to drink, 45 ounces is used to produce urine, 35 ounces compensates for typical water losses through the lungs (13 ounces), feces (5 ounces) and skin (17 ounces).

Avid exercisers should weigh themselves prior to working out and then after working out to determine their rate of water loss and thus their water needs. Replace 100% of the water loss, 2cups equals about one pound. Long airplane flights are another situation that demands extra fluid intake, a traveler can lose about 6 cups of water in a 3hr flight.

If you ignore getting the right amount of water for your body, the pituitary gland releases a hormone to force the kidneys to conserve water. They respond by reducing urine flow.

Too much water - water toxicity usually occurs when an athlete over-compensates for the amount of water they lost (remember, weighing before and after one of your training sessions to determine how much water you normally lose - then only drink that much to replace). For dieters, water toxicitiy occurs when it is not accompanied by a sufficient salt intake.

Facts:

- 75% of Americans are chronically dehydrated
- 37% of Americans have a weak thirst mechanism that is often mistaken for hunger.
- Mild dehydration will slow one's metabolism down as much as 3%
- Lack of water is the number one trigger of daytime fatigue
- Medical research indicates that 8-10 glasses of water a day can significantly ease back and joint pain in 80% of suffers
- Drinking at least 5 glasses of water a day can reduce risk colon cancer by 45%, slash the risk of breast cancer by 79% and one if 50% less likley to develop bladder cancer

Happy Water Drinking -

I think water is very important to weightloss, it is my opinion at least. I drink at least 65-100 fl.oz. (2 - 3 liters) every day, and I have found a good way to get that amount of water in your system. Before every meal (I eat 3 big meals in addition to snacks 2-3 times a day) I drink 17 fl. oz. (0.5 ltr) of water, and in addition to all the good things that water does, I think drinking water before every meal makes all the digestion process much easier. I hardly never get uncomfortness after meals, I get full after meals but not in a bad way. At work I always make sure that the frigerator is filled with water in 17 fl.oz (o.5 ltr) bottles. At home I always use a 0.5 ltr glass for water. By doing this I can monitor how much I drink, simply by remembering how many bottles and glasses I had. I am fortunate to live in Iceland, because the water here is just yummie, it always comes icecold from the tap, and it actually tastes really good, nearly sweet in taste, comparing to other types of tab water. The best water I have tasted in Iceland is at my grandmothers home in north Iceland. She lives on a farm and they get the water from a spring in the mountain above their farm. I would never have believed that water could actually be delicious, but hers is. I think that most people in Iceland are on the wrong track healthwise, because there are soooo many that actually drink ONLY sugar-soda for thirst, I was one of those for some period of time. In fact because its nearly always so cold here I guess people drink much less water then in warmer countries, simply because we dont sweat as much. I remember that I had before maybe 1-2 glasses of fluid during a whole day, so it makes more sense why I got so overweight.

I recognize the peeing issue. I have to do nr. 1 about an hour after every meal, plus I wake up 1-4 times during the night to pee. It simply runs through but I know its just the toxins flushing out, so I dont really mind about the trips to the toilet. I have also noticed that I get more thirstier then before. If I dont drink a lot of water during the day I get very thirsty. If I dont drink a big glass of water before going to sleep, I actually wake up thirsty and have to go to the kitchen to drink water in the middle of the night.

I have been drinking that much water for nearly 6 months now plus eating a very balanced and healthy diet (lots of veggies and fruit), and believe me, These things ARE the wonderdrug against overweight that everyone is trying to find. My health, physically and mentally, has improved so much that it is pretty close to a miracle, and just think about that, the thing that worked was not the magic pills, powders or shakes. No, they were just plain ol´ tab water and the veggies and fruit, available in a store near you!!!!

The human mind is kind of strange when you think about it. Even if we have the solution for our problems right in front of us, we think that it cant work, because it is TOO obvious. We always try to find a way that isnt even a solution, because we think that a way that is obviously not working for the solution, is the easy way, and the right way because it isnt obviously the solution. WOW here you have a worldrecord of the usage of the word "obvious" in a sentence :p

Water for Weight Loss

This is an excellent post on weight loss. I have really focused on water being my main liquid and in 3 months I have lost 10 pounds by just drinking no pop. It's awesome.

Okay after moving up to a little over 3 liters of water a day, my revelation is this: The more you pee the more tissue paper you go through! lol

Ok, I have a question about water...

I hope I don't sound like a dope and totally just miss something here, but if you drink glasses of sugar free, caffeine free pop, or decaffinated tea, does that count as water? I know it's not pure water but I want to know because if it counts then I'm drinking TONS! And if not, then I better start drinking pure water!
