Weight Lifting Gloves?!

Just wondered what everyones opinions were on them?
I never used to use them but I got troubled with sore hands and hard skin.

I was told recently that if you trained with gloves that you would end up with weak hands on a strong body.

The gym I go to does not have any chalk.

how can gloves make your hands weak:confused:
they dont stop you griping and they dont make your grip stronger, they just stop the bar slipping.

I used them at my ol gym because of the painfull grooves in the barbell. But thats the only reason I'd ever use them.
When doing chin ups I really miss them, but I'd rather limit my lat work and gain the grip strength.

lamno69,

If you do not use gloves you will either shred your hands from the knurling on the bars, or develop really tough and ugly callouses. This of course assumes you are using serious weight.

That said, it is not an absolute requirement that you use expensive leather lifting gloves. Nubby-palmed gardening gloves from Home Depot / Lowe's work pretty well at a fraction of the cost.

Of course, the leather lifting gloves do have the 'cool' factor.

I find the gardening ones work better! YMMV.

mreik,

'Tough and ugly' callouses can be a good thing or
a bad thing according to the preferences of your bedmate.

Mine prefers smooth and strong. I have learned that
favoring her preferences can be rewarding to me.

YMMV.

Aloha & Howzit!

No, gloves don't make you get weak hands.
YOur hands are connected to rest of your body but...sometimes your mind can make you weak instead.
Use the gloves is you tend to sweat alot in your hands or just wipe them try with a towel before you grip the bar or handles of a machine.
You know, If you were hanging off a cliff and had to hold on or grab a branch you sure ain't going look for your gloves right?

for now, use them if you "think" they help you with your exercises but you ain't going get weak hands/grip by using them.

Okay, that's !
Good Health and Aloha for now!

aka, make your grip stronger. Only use them when your grip is your limiting factor on a lift.

his question was "I was told recently that if you trained with gloves that you would end up with weak hands on a strong body."
wearing gloves cannot make your gripstrength any weaker or stronger,it just stops the sweat between you and the bar,it doesnt make your finger or forearm muscles any stronger.

I've never used gloves and although I have bigger calouses than the average joe, I would not all them "ugly" or even noticable. The calouses don't form on fingertips so they don't interfere with my "soft touch".

Like Mr. Quiocho said above I would rather have everything I need readily at hand if I need it in a real world situation, than need to look for gloves before I could perform. If you are into martial arts it certainly helps toughen your hands for palm strikes as well.

GRRRRRRR i dont use gloves Im am so manly and tough grrrrrr. I put methylated spirits in my calouses because my boss said it helps grrrrrrrrr i dont know if it has yet grrrrr.

Note - the grrrr's in this post were intended to emphasize how tough I am :D

I only use gloves when I'm ripping phonebooks in half with my eyeballs.
lmao

I use gloves. Always. I can't lift heavy or even regular when the engravings on the bars are digging into my hands. Plus I like keeping my "soft touch" hands ;) ... and I guess I'm a wuss :/

If your hands cut and stuff then you could ofc use gloves, no reason to bleed all over stuff to be "tough" Tell Ronnie he's a wuss ;)
I have stone skin so dont need 'em :=o
