Weigh Yourself Everyday Club

I wonder, is water retention itself a problem, other than the worry about weight gain? Now that I know its not fat does it really matter?
I'm obviously not a doctor, but I think it depends on what is causing the water retention. Inactivity & salty foods is not great, but not the worst. Repairing muscle tissue or recovering from trauma is probably a good thing. Reactions to medications may or may not be an issue. But it could also indicate some cardiovascular issues so it is good to get it checked out.

Hey Vic, good to see you and holding in the 130s, good for you!

A move would be a big deal Err, it always is. How far are you thinking of moving? How many miles from where you are now? Would you be buying or renting? Even moving to a lower cost area I would think buying right now would be tough, in most of the country the real estate market has gone crazy, I fear we are in a bubble. Best of luck with it, hope you find something that makes you happy!
I'm disappointed I'm not magically cured and ready to handle anything
I sure know that feeling, particularly of late with my binges. For me accepting that I will always have an eating problem and want more than I should eat is a necessity. Not one I am happy about, but its my reality. I suspect it may be yours as well. Also I see you have some new low body fat %s, suggests your weight gain has been water, not fat. Oh, thanks for the advice on my water retention, and I will get it checked out, my blood tests should be back today and I have a Dr's appointment this afternoon to talk about them.

Nothing new here on the weight front.

Looks like your weight is ticking back down Rob, congrats!
A move would be a big deal Err, it always is. How far are you thinking of moving? How many miles from where you are now?
Distance isn't much of a factor, but I'd like to be in or near a forest, in or near mountains, in a place that stays green at least 9 months of the year, preferably somewhere that doesn't get more than ~6" of snow accumulation in the winter, and somewhere that doesn't get too much heat with humidity in the summer. To top it off, I'd really like to be somewhere that respects its citizen's autonomy. There isn't anywhere that fits all of those, though I find appealing various places in (far) northern California, southern Oregon, eastern Washington, Idaho, Western Montana, Western South Dakota, Western Colorado, the lush pockets in Nevada, Utah, New Mexico & Arizona, Western Pennsylvania, Eastern Tennessee, Southern Kentucky, South/Eastern Missouri, Western Carolinas, West Virginia, Northern New York, New Hampshire, Vermont, and Maine. Idaho is probably the most appealing, but a scary number of other assholes from California are fleeing there so I'm not sure I'll like what it'll be in 10 years...
Would you be buying or renting? Even moving to a lower cost area I would think buying right now would be tough, in most of the country the real estate market has gone crazy, I fear we are in a bubble. Best of luck with it, hope you find something that makes you happy!
I would be open to renting for a year in an area I'm not that familiar with, but long term I'm looking to buy. We are living in crazy times and I see lots of pain on the horizon. In many ways I hope for a bubble, but I don't think this will correct the same way as 2008-9. My fear is inflation, with the good scenario being 70s-style stagflation and the bad scenario being hyperinflation. Either way, it is possible that today's crazy asset prices will seem like once-in-a-lifetime cheap opportunities in 2024 if dollars become worth less...

But I've been predicting higher inflation ever since the US started financing a 20 year war with borrowed money & then a decade later spent trillions on bailouts & quantitative easing. Annualized inflation since 2002 has been just a hair over 2% so either I have no ability to spot macro trends or the market can stay irrational longer than I can stay solvent sane...

Hey Vic, good to see you holding in the 130s!

Thanks for the explanation Err, you have a long list of places to sift through. I am sure you will find something you like, best of luck with it! Oh, and let me know where that lush pocket in Utah that stays green 9 months of the year is, I haven't found it yet, LOL!

Have you ever moved so far before? As a veteran of several cross country moves I can tell you they are harder, leaving friends and family and all. And it is hard to really know what a place will be like socially or culturally just visiting. Some places are just easier to fit into than others, but I see you are at least thinking about that. Utah is a good example, I am not Mormon and am living in a town that is 95+% Mormon, actually am yet to meet anyone in this little town who is not Mormon, other than us. I have lived in Utah before and get along fine with the Mormons, they are good people, but I know others who move here and do not. And I knew what I was getting into when we moved here. I am originally from Louisiana, despite that I find it harder to fit into than a lot of places, but I see Louisiana is not on your list...

Yeah, like you I keep expecting mortgage interest rates to go up driving the real estate market down, but it hasn't happened, not yet anyway... Best of luck with it, given your analytical mind and systematic approach to things I am sure you will make a good decision, better thought out than some of mine... And the looking can be fun, enjoy it!

Ha, "lush" is relative when talking NV/AZ/NM/UT, but I seem to recall Park City and some pockets around Bear Lake staying green until the snow. Park City is too expensive for me, but I haven't looked too closely at Bear Lake.

Have you ever moved so far before? As a veteran of several cross country moves I can tell you they are harder, leaving friends and family and all. And it is hard to really know what a place will be like socially or culturally just visiting. Some places are just easier to fit into than others, but I see you are at least thinking about that. Yeah I've lived at times in Oregon, Utah, and North Dakota in addition to traveling throughout the continental US for work for 10 years. Friends & family are what has kept me coming back to Northern California, but I feel like staying would be akin to the frog in boiling water...

I like Mormons more than most other folks and tend to find myself in areas with large LDS communities. I don't care for all of the church's social positions, but I've found most mormons are live and let live sorts. And I really admire their balance of independence & interdependence (their culture of preparedness seems to help prevent temporary hand up's from becoming permanent hand outs). But I also know I'd face some discrimination (e.g. losing bids to mormon-owned companies, not being able to attend weddings of friends & neighbors). Its all a trade off...

I am originally from Louisiana, despite that I find it harder to fit into than a lot of places, but I see Louisiana is not on your list...
The Southeast is very lush, but I found the heat & humidity downright oppressive in the summer - which is odd because I can tolerate the 100+ degree (dry) heat here as long as I'm well hydrated. Of course I was carrying an extra 200+ lbs all the times I went through so I may not find it as oppressive today. It also is flatter than I'd like, although you can find some hills in places.

One of the things that struck me about Louisiana in particular was the pace of life was soooo much slower than I'm used to. If you go into a grocery store here, you'll hear the beep of items being scanned at the register about once or twice every second. In Louisiana, there seemed to be about 1 beep from the scanner every 2 or even 3 seconds. It seemed as if some invisible viscous fluid slowed everything down - even speech became drawn out. It's funny because when my aunt moved up to NorCal from San Diego she complained that our cashiers were too nosy because they'd ask how you're doing and chat as they rang you up. She got used to it, and I'd probably get used to the pace of things in Louisiana too.

And the looking can be fun, enjoy it!
Thanks, looking is fun and it helps me appreciate what I already have.

Hey Err, looks like you are tied with your previous low, I think you will be out of the 210s soon.

Thanks for the reply, and yes Utah does have naturally green places, like Bear Lake and Park City, but they are all higher altitude cold places that get a lot of snow and don't have enough summer to dry out. Would not meet your 9 month criteria. Before moving to a place like that I suggest you visit in winter, or even "spring" to see what you are getting into. And you are right about Part City, too expensive for what you get, in my opinion. Your take on the Mormons is pretty good, you seem to know them, and see the good qualities I see. As to the problem of doing business here, it kind of depends on what business you are in. I don't think the Mormons openly discriminate or even knowingly do. However they have a tight and well developed social network that revolves around the church, and a lot of business connections are made that way. You would never be a part of that, unless you joined! Oh, and you seem to know that the current politically correct thing is not to call them Mormons, but to use the LDS name. I am having a hard time adjusting to that (I am not alone), their main book is still called the Book of Mormon, and Mormon remains one of their most important prophets.

Ending the month steady in the 160s. Not where I want to be, but stable at least.

Good for Angel!

Thanks for asking Err, and yes, something has changed, and its not just about calories. Here are the things that I have changed in the past few weeks:
  1. Eating dairy again, the reason I took it out was that the nutritionist suspected it was the cause of my digestive problems, but it clearly was not. However it could be the cause of the weight gain...
  2. Eating more carbs, same story as the dairy. Most of my carbs are in veggies, fruit, and the dairy products, I eat no starches. One exception is that I have started eating shredded wheat for breakfast again, my only grain.
  3. Eating some artificial sweetener again, not as much and just stevia. Along with it I am eating more unsweetened chocolate. I have stayed off of the carbonated diet drinks.
  4. Changed my protein powder, I am now eating non-dairy bone based protein supplement, for a long time I ate whey based.
  5. Probably have let my sodium go up a bit, not intentionally but have not been as careful with it. I do not and never had high blood pressure and have been told sodium is not a health problem for me, I just try to keep it down on general principals.
  6. I am eating a few more calories, probably 100 to 200 per day more.
  7. And there is the surgery and resulting lack of exercise...
So a lot has changed, but to have gained 18 pounds now since the day before surgery, less than a month ago, is surprising. Not quite sure what to do about it. If the carbs or dairy are causing more water retention weight, but otherwise not hurting me I can live with a few extra pounds. On the other hand the extra calories and lack of exercise could be a problem. I should probably try changing that first. And cutting the sodium a bit could not hurt. Up another pound this morning...

Hi Rob, I tried looking this up and some reasons people gain weight post surgery is lack of movement and sometimes the stress of the surgery can even cause you to retain water or impact metabolism. Did your doctor say anything about weight gain post surgery? Maybe it's temporary.

Hey Misty, good to see you here. I have been talking with the doctor about and he thinks it is too much weight to gain and been too long to all be due to the surgery, but he is not sure. He has agreed that it is most, if not all, water weight so I am hoping its temporary. Losing at least some of it would feel good. How are you doing?

Err. good to see you holding most of your losses, you'll be back in the aughts soon.

Nothing new here.

After losing about 160 lbs I began maintenance in July 2020 and am trying to stay somewhere in or close to the 150s.
