Flumes, I hope you can find them. They are really good. I think there are a few brands out there. They are the kind with only three ingredients -- corn, water, and lime.

Hello, Derrick. Thanks for stopping by! I would be glad to post pictures, but unfortunately I don't have any "before" pictures. When I started out, I didn't seriously believe I would lose the weight. I had been 165 most of my adult life and thought I was stuck there. When I shot up to 185 that last year, I felt too bad about my looks to let myself be photographed.

Menu
Breakfast: Three corn tortillas with peanut butter; vanilla soymilk with cinnamon; strawberries
Snack: Apple, green tea
Lunch: Hard-boiled egg, baked potato, Brussels sprouts, salad (parsley and tomato), cayenne
Snack: Raisins
Dinner: Stew (turnips, eggplant, bitter melon, lentils, tomato sauce, radish greens, mustard greens); sauerkraut
Snack: Mixed berries, vanilla soymilk with molasses

The late-night snacking got me again. My sleep has been erratic all weekend. We have a new kitten and he gets me up several times during the night, then I nap during the day. This led to me being up until midnight last night, and if I'm awake late and there's food, it's a bad combination. I ended up at 2500 calories.

Menu
Breakfast: Apple
Snack: None
Lunch: Salad (kidney beans, lettuce, cucumber, tomato, green onion, radishes, honey mustard dressing, lemon juice, balsamic vinegar, black pepper)
Snack: Fruit (strawberries, cantaloupe, watermelon)
Dinner: Baked tofu (Soy deli brand, honey sesame flavor); turnip greens in tomato sauce
Snack: Three corn tortillas with peanut butter and strawberry jam; popcorn (salt, cooking spray)

Exercise
10,000 steps; no push-ups

Awwww...a new kitten! Do we have a name yet???

I remember our dogs as pups. We just got the one all trained and everything and my wife (in her caring wisdom) decided that two dogs would be sooo much happier together. So Bella (Spinone Italiano) got a friend...Stella (Pure lab/Pure Golden)
And we almost got divorced before we were married! lol Puppies are a challenge sometimes, to say the least. As are kittens I imagine.

Good luck and hope you have a better nite.

I got Mark Bittman's book, How to Cook Everything Vegetarian. I don't normally cook from recipes -- no patience -- but I like to look through cookbooks to get ideas for combining foods and flavors. It looks pretty good.

Also read Daniel Kirschenbaums, The 9 Truths About Weight Loss. It had a lengthy chapter on maintaining weight loss. Except for Anne Fletcher's Thin for Life, I have had a hard time finding books that specifically address the problem of keeping the weight off. I have seen that statistic about 95% of people who lose weight regaining it, and am trying to be as proactive as I can so it doesn't happen to me.

Kirschenbaum says that his number one trick to maintaining weight loss is to throw out your old large clothes and only wear clothes that fit your new size. I had been putting this off. I don't care for shopping, so I had been wearing my old size 12 and 14 pants pulled in with a belt. Today I finally got three new pair of pants (size 6). There is not much leeway in the hips and seat, so they will be a good warning signal if I start to put on weight.

I also read Barry Popkin's The World Is Fat, a look at the global obesity epidemic. He explores the different sociological changes (fast food, tv, two-working-parent families) that lead to obesity in the US, Mexico, and India. It was a pretty depressing read.

Went to the open-air market today -- bought strawberries, green onions, three varieties of lettuce, swiss chard, broccoli, beets with beet greens.

Last night I watched Losing It With Jillian on tv. I was not too impressed. It the the new show of Jillian from The Biggest Loser. My complaints: (1) Jillian's agressive, hectoring style. Effective with some people but not with me. When I started exercising, I could walk less than 5 minutes. On the first day Jillian had this woman (Mrs. Jones of Boston) RUNNING, doing chin-ups, squats, driving her to tears. The woman had not exercised in 20 years. One day someone is either going to really injure themselves or punch Jillian in the nose. (2) The one-week time limit. This family (mom & 2 kids) had major issues. The mother was probably clinically depressed, having lost her husband some years back. How can a week of "therapy" (I put it in quotes because Jillian is not a mental health professional) have any meaningful and lasting effect? Again, I think it sets people up for failure. They see this family turn their lives around in one week and feel lousy if they can't do the same. (3) The weight loss. After Jillian went home, Mrs. Jones lost 36 pounds in 6 weeks. How realistic is this? At my slowest I lost 1/4 pound per week, and never more than 2 pounds/week. There is no real look at Mrs. Jones' diet or nutrition. Just a blanket recommendation to eat less processed and more whole foods. (4) Injury. Mrs. Jones eventually runs a 5k at the end of 6 weeks training. Yet she had injured herself and was literally limping over the finish line. It is just completely irresponsible to show this sort of behavior in an admirable light. What if the 5k made her worse? People need time to heal.

What did I like about the show? The fact that Jillian did seem to have an understanding of the issues. She saw how the woman's messy house was related to her depression and obesity. There was a good look at the family dynamic with the elder child taking on more household responsibilities than she should have and the fact that the mom needed to cultivate a support network. I liked the emphasis on goal-setting and on quality family time. So there were some good lessons to take away but in my opinion the bad outweighed the good. I will probably watch it again because I like shows on fitness and weight loss, even if I disagree with them.

I can't believe you were wearing size 12's when you should have been wearing size 6!!! That must have felt so good to get those new pants! I bet it really showed you how far you've come! I'm so excited for you! Doesn't it make you want to buy more new stuff? I'm keeping some of my big stuff but out of sight and reach until I need maternity clothes. Right now I'm enjoying shopping a lot!
I liked the post about Jillian's new show - I only caught a bit of it last week and I got the same impressions you did. It just comes on too late for me to catch the whole thing.
Have a great day!

Hello, chubbygirl. It does feel good to wear a smaller size. I'm not big on shopping, but there is definitely a wider variety of attractive clothes available now.

Menu
Breakfast: Two corn tortillas with low-fat refried beans (TJ brand) sunflower seeds and tomato; strawberries; green tea
Snack: Apple
Lunch: Two hard boiled eggs (salt, cayenne); spinach; two tomatoes
Snack: Orange, raisins, black tea
Dinner: Stir-fry (tempeh, green onion, carrot, swiss chard, mushrooms, cayenne, low-sodium soy sauce, lemon juice)
Snack: Mixed berries; twenty almonds; four pieces hard candy; two corn tortillas with peanut butter and strawberry jam; popcorn with sunflower seeds (nutritional yeast, garlic salt, cooking spray)

Exercise
Walked 10,000 steps; 10 push-ups

An awful awful binge last night. Nearly 1000 calories AFTER I was in bed. I'm PMS-ing bad. Also my calorie count for the past couple of days has been a little low, so even though I didn't FEEL hungry, maybe my body was revolting. It started when my kitten grabbed my alotted bedtime snack. I went to the fridge for something else and then could not stop eating. This is really embarrassing, but I am going to write it anyway. I actually took food out of the garbage. Earlier in the day I had reorganized a cabinet and found a nearly-empty bag of veggie sticks (same nutritional profile as potato chips, but ostensibly better for you because they are colored with vegetable juice!). When I put it in the garbage, I had no desire for it at all. I even decided not to put the garbage down the chute because the veggie sticks were so unappealing. So why was I eating them at 11 at night? They were not even satisfying. None of the stuff I ate was all that satisfying in fact. So today I am up a pound, feeling fat, bloated, sluggish, foggy.
