-- How much weight do you want to lose?
I would like to lose 40lbs.

-- What is the timeframe for reaching your target weight?
Not sure, six months. I'm still learning.

-- How do you want to accomplish your goal (what methods do you want to use)?
Dieting and moderate workouts (walking Hot Yoga)

-- Who or what can support you in reaching your goal?
My wife. This forum and writing down what I eat.

-- How realistic is your goal?

I'm 49 years old, i've been physically active most my life, but the weight has been creeping up over the years. I weigh close to 230 and I'm 5ft 10inches. I'm naturally muscular (mesomorph), but i've been getting thick through the trunk and I believe my body fat ratio is getting up there. I remember that I was comfortable around 190 and I think that is very realistic. Who knows, maybe that will change?

-- When will you start?

Right away.
========================
I walk the dog for about an hour in the afternoon. That should work as my physical activity for now.

Cheat day will be saturday.

Today's weight 227.8. I am using 230 as my baseline start weight due the state of shock I went into when weighed myself the previous week (before I started this forum).

This is my first time dieting, so i'm sure this will change as I read and learn more.
****************************************************************************************
What is your current height and weight?
5 ft 10 inches.
If you were at an ideal weight now, what would that weight be?
--180
At what weight would you like to be at four months from now?
--200
Why do you want to lose weight?
--Getting older. Having less weight on my frame just makes life easier.
Do you want to lose weight for a specific life event such as wedding or reunion? If so, when is that event?
--No. This is for a lifestyle change.
What obstacles could get between you and your weight loss goals?
--My looking at this as a "diet and weight loss" rather than a lifestyle change is a mistake in my opinion.
--Online video games is another obstacle. I tend to be a bit obsessive and can easly spend way too many hours online. I've haven't played an online video game for over a month and that does make a difference for me.
Why do you think that you now have a weight problem?
--High blood pressure. Arthritis and joint issues -- the extra weight does not help.
What lifestyle changes do you think would help you lose weight?
--Getting more sleep every night. Staying away from fast food and empty carbs.
Have you lost weight in the past? If so, what has worked in the past to help you lose weight?
--No, I never felt the need because i've always been physically active. I think i've used that as an excuse to eat badly at times.
Why do you believe that you did not lose weight or you gained the weight back?
What, if anything, has not worked for you in the past in helping you to lose weight? Why do you think it did not work?
--Relying on working out by itself. My metabolism has slowed down quite a bit.
Would you try writing down all food and drink consumed for a given period of time?
--definitely.
Do you cook at home often? If so, what do you cook?
--Mostly microwavable foods. Rice potatos. various types of soy food etc.
How often do you go out to eat? Where do you go?
--Not too ofter anymore. Usually vietnamese or chinese. Sometimes a buffet place (bad idea!).
What are your three favorite foods?
--Lasagna, cheeseburger and pizza hut meatlovers pizza.
What are your three favorite restaurants?
--Islands. Hometown Buffet and Pizza Hut
What are three things you can do differently when it comes to food?
--Eat more like my wife; she is a vegan. Stay way from empty carbs and stay away from sugar.
If you woke up tomorrow and your body was exactly the way you want it, what would be different?
--I would be healthier.
Do you eat when you are not hungry?
--Yes.
Do you binge eat (large amounts at a time)?
--Yes.
Do you hide your food or eat in secret?
--No
Do you eat when you are sad, nervous, or depressed?
--yes
Do you eat as a reward?

Do you eat while watching TV or using the computer?
--Yes
What do you normally eat for a meal?
--Lots of rice with Nuts and some meat
What type of snacks do you eat?
--Nuts, Potato chips -- lots of potato chips.
In terms of exercise, what, if anything, are you currently doing?
--Right now, just walking a couple of miles a day. My exercise of choice was Bikram Yoga.
Where do you go for exercise? A local public gym? School/work gym? Home?
--I walk around the local neighborhood when I'm walking the dog. I have several routes. The Bikram Yoga studio is only two miles away.
What, if anything, are your three favorite types of exercise?
--Swimming, I was a competitive swimmer in high school. Bikram Yoga in a hot room. Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu was great exercise.
What is your daily/weekly/monthly/yearly motivation to move towards your goals?
Do you have rewards for certain goals?
Not really. My goal is a lifestyle change and to develop good habits.

My first day and meals on this diet.

I started with the "4-Hour" diet for the first six weeks. It seems faddish, but I liked the simplicity of it and it got me started. Since then, i've been on a "raw" diet, with a lot of animal protein (fish, chicken and some red meat). The biggest thing that helped me to take the weight off was mostly eliminating processed food, sugar, dairy and flour.

Breakfast.

1. Small bowl of grape nuts.
2. Can of water packed low sodium sardines for protein. I switching out to eggs or salmon (sardines in the morning... ugh).
3. Spinach, brocolli and chia blended with water.

Lunch
1. Small salad, Iceberg lettuce, carrots with vinegar.
2. Pieces of grilled chicken.'

Dinner

To be updated later

Two hours after lunch, i took the dog on the usual 1 hour walk. About 1/2 through I felt some slight effects of low blood sugar -- my body is used to having a lot more carbs. Drinking a lot of water right now and looking forward to Dinner.

Dinner.
1. Two cooked eggs
2. Lentils
3. Spinach, lettuce and carrot.

I was very hungry and a bit cranky. Not too thrilled with eating lentils, but they were better than I thought they would be.

I didn't eat anything else today. I am looking forward to the "cheat" day.

Woke up this morning with a bit of a headache and I was cranky. Tried to adjust the breakfast a bit.
1. Two eggs.
2. Spinach, lettuce, broccoli and salva in a blender -- with water.
3. Lentils and sardines (ugh) -- Much larger portion of lentis this time. I need something with caloric density.

Not perfect, but nothing processed, sugary or white and that is part of my goal.

No cravings this morning and I felt full. The extra portion of legumes seems to have made a difference.
Lunch
1. Chicken pieces
2. Salad - spinach and iceberg lettuce. Vinegar.
3. Lentils

Dinner,
1. Salmon
2. Lentils
3. Spinach, carrot.

Today went easier than I thought (so far). The cravings weren't bad at all this morning. I did have a rough spot later this afternoon -- the next door neighbors were having a barbecue.

Eating the lentils is not fun, but they are nutritious and eating a much larger portion made a difference today.

Day #3
Slept better last night and I didn't have a headache when I woke up this morning.
I was hungry but without "cravings". There seems to be a difference between cravings and being hungry. I'm still learning. Posting everytime I've eaten is probably redundant but it's keeping me focused.
Breakfast
1. Two cooked eggs
2. Bowl of brocolli
3. Spinach blended with Chia and water
4. Lentils with some salmon for taste.

Went and bought some garlic and dried onion season for more taste.
Lunch
1. Salmon & Lentils.
2. Spinach and lettuce.

Dinner.
1. Black organic lentils decent sized portion sprinkled with dried onion bits.
2. Salmon burger (salmon mixed with one egg made into a patty) No bread or ketchup:(
3. Spinach and lettuce.

The only thing i've been drinking is water -- lots of water.

Day #4
Breakfast.
1. Two cooked eggs.
2. Large portion of lentils sprinkled with dried onion bits with very small chunks of cooked salmon.
3. Spinach, lettuce and broccoli blended together with salva.

Day #4
Lunch
1. Lettuce, carrots.
2. shrimp, crab meat.
--No legumes. I had to eat on the run. I was ravenous by dinner.

Dinner
1. Cooked Salmon patty mixed with one egg -- garlic and pepper seasoning.
2. Lentils -- large portion. Decided to cook it in a pan like a stir fry and used garlic and pepper seasoning.
3. Spinach and romaine lettuce blended with salva.

Not a bad day. Took the dog for the usual two mile walk felt good.

Just drinking lots of water. That's it.

I think posting what you eat, when, is a great way to keep track and keep you focus! I try to do that every day! It's also a great way for you to see your wonderful improvements!! :)

Is your wife partaking in this too?! :)

Hi Tik, Thank you for the encouragement. I'm trying to follow the diet plan and it doesn't contain fruit since any type of sugar isn't allowed, but that might change after the first couple weeks. Nothing is engraved in stone. I miss my banana, acai, blueberry, orange smoothies.

My wife has been a vegan for a few years and is thin as a rail, so she doesn't need to suffer with me;)

Day #5
Haven't been sleeping well for the last couple nights. I've been drinking a lot of water, so i'm sure getting up in the middle of the night isn't helping.

The only thing i've eaten is what i've listed in this diary. I'm not paying attention at all to portion sizes. The first thing i'm going to do when I wake up Saturday morning is weigh myself.

Saturday is also my first "cheat day". I will eat some things i've been missing (fruit, nuts and some italian food), but i'm not going to go nuts.

Breakfast.
1. Two eggs over medium.
2. Cooked lentils mixed with egg white with sardines on the side.
3. Lettuce, brocolli, carrot. All blended together with salva and water

Day #5
1. Lentils mixed with egg white cooked in a pan.
2. Large portion of chicken pieces.
3. Spinach, romaine lettuce salad with vinegar.

Oh no! That smoothie sounds awful, and something very sad to miss :(

Have you considered going vegan with your wife?

I tried a few years ago and lasted a few months...I don't know how people do it!! LOL

I'm starting out with the diet in a book called "The 4-Hour Body". He (the author) specified no fruit except on the "cheat" day. His reason was because of the fructose content. The fructose content is relatively low, but it's still there. I still think cutting out all fruit is a bit extreme, so I'm probably going to wait about a couple weeks and start eating blueberries and grapefruit.
