Trops Diary

Four weeks on here

5-8-08

It's four weeks today that I've been on WLF. I went to update my ticker, but for some reason it's not coming up. Weight this morning is 223.6. I took measurements, too

On 4-10 this is what I had:
Weight 242
Chest 50
Waste 48
Hips 44
Upper Arm 14.75
Upper Thigh 24.5

On 4-21 I got this:
Weight 233 (9 lbs lost)
Chest 48 (2 inches lost)
Waste 44 (4 inches lost)
Hips 42 (2 inches lost)
Upper Arm 15 (1/4 inch gain)
Upper Thigh 27 (2 1/2 inch gain)

And today:
Weight 223.6 (9.4 lbs lost)
Chest 46 (2 inches lost)
Waste 42.5 (1.5 inches lost)
hips 41 (1 inch lost)
Upper Arm 15 (same)
Upper Thigh 25 (2 inches lost)

I'm wondering if the last time I took measurements was right after a workout or something. Gaining that much and then losing it in your thigh can't be right. Oh, well, guess that's why I'm not a scientist.

Ticker is working now. I love that ticker. I hate changing it up, but I do when I have to. It gives me a bit of motivation to stay on track.

Actually I haven't been running very long at all. I had run 3 miles twice before, then I did 3.7. I was hoping to do 4 even, but I did it at a kind of slow pace and when I got to 4 I figured why not go for 5, so I did. It wasn't bad. The only thing is that when I did the 3.7 I had some chafing on my thighs pretty bad. When I did the 5 miles I wore some running shorts under my sweat shorts and I didn't have a problem with the chafing. I also was doing some other exercises, mountain biking, where I was going for an hour. Not the same, but I think my body was just used to going for longer times. Good luck on Sunday.

Yeah, I always wear spandex type shorts under my actual workout shorts. My thighs are a 'healthy' size :))), so I would chafe pretty bad if I didn't. I have naturally big legs. My calves are wonderfully muscular, but my thighs... well, not so much!

I'm glad to hear you were able to run the 5 miles after only running 3.7 miles before. It gives me hope! I also do 1 hour workouts on the elliptical, but it just isn't quite the same as being outside running!

I'll let you know how it goes! :)

[Oh, and the things that we have in common doesn't stop there. My daughter takes Irish Step dancing, too. She's 8 and really doesn't put much into it, but she did her first feis in February. I tell you, I couldn't have been more proud.

I took irish Step when I was young too, but didn't stick with it. My 2 younger sisters also took lessons, and my littlest sister was really good and even competed in Ireland. My 2 girls, ages 12 and 7, have taken lessons for the past 2 years but the older one just gave it up- she lost interest, but my 7yr LOVES it. She enjoys it, although she has no interest atm to compete (which is fine by me! I rembmer all the running around and money that my parents spent in this "hobby"). No hard shoe just yet, but I'm looking forward to that!

My daughter doesn't want to compete, either, but I think that for her to move up to advanced beginners or something, she had to have a feis. I'm all for skipping the feis thing, though. Just the prices of those dresses are enough to make you faint.

I wanted my son to do it, but he has a little problem with paying attention when he'd rather be out playing. Who can blame him, but I can't force him. I do think he'd be great at it, though.

Day 30

5-9-08
Day off

Yesterday was pretty much a bust. I didn't work out. I ate very little, but then I made spaghetti and meatballs for dinner and I had the sauce over a sliced up cucumber. When I was done the kids each had half a bowl in left, so I just ate that up. Shouldn't have done it, but what the hell. Didn't do any kind of workout.

Today was kind of the same. I ate two bowls of cereal. Not my usual kind because I'm out, but not a bad one. Running around trying to get things done because we're going away this weekend. Didn't eat anything else till dinner. We stopped at Mc Donalds on the way, but I didn't get anything. I stopped at a deli and got a turkey on wheat with tomato and mustard. Then we got to my in-laws at about 9:30 and they had pizza waiting for us. I had two and a half small slices and a guiness. I felt like I really shouldn't have had the pizza, but what the hell. What am I going to do? Force my thing or starve?

Tomorrow isn't looking much better. They're planning a big barbecue. I'll figure something out. I'm leaving early because I have work on Sunday, so maybe I won't be hit so hard. I really wish I had one of my killer salads to get me through.

I left this out, although it was weighing on my mind. When we were getting on the ferry, I was still starving and there was one McDonalds cheeseburger left, so I ate it. I don't know what made me skip it on my diary. probably subconsciously trying to hide it. I'm not trying to hide anything, so here it is.

:(

Day 32

5-11-08 Sunday
Day Shift

I don't have much time for an in depth report of how the weekend went. I'll try to hit the high points.

Yesterday I was at my father in law's for his birthday. What a great time. I had to leave early to catch the ferry back for work today, so I was lucky enough to leave just as they were serving the cake. I timed it that way.

This morning I wanted to wake up early and go biking before work, but I just can not get my ass out of bed before I have to. I even packed the bike and all my stuff in the van the night before, so all I'd have to do is get up and go. Nope, got up and changed the alarm for the right time. Besides, who wants to see 5:30 anyway?

Work was ok, but the morning was busy. Cereal and two mugs of coffee. Lunch break I went out running.

5 miles (probably closer to 5.15)
53 min. 26 sec.
hr 179
5 min hr 128

The best thing is that I did the first 3.1 miles in 30 min. 44 sec. That was with having enough for two more miles. That's under a ten min mile. I haven't been able to keep that fro more then one mile.

My real goal is to be able to do a 10 k in under an hour. We'll see

Yogurt and honey for lunch, two apples for snack. Diner tonight was at my mom's and had chicken, potatoes, veggies, and salad. I kept everything to small portions, so now I'm really hungry, but I'm going to bed. Tomorrow is another day.

Oh cool Trops you're a runner too... I did not even know that!! No wonder you gave such good advice :) Best of luck to you in your goals for the 10K, although I know it takes more work and training than luck ;) I just started running, so I will be frequenting your diary :D Enjoy the rest of your day!!

Thanks, Pink, but somehow I just don't feel like a runner. I'm more like just a guy who runs to lose weight, a true beginner.

You've got to have some pretty good joints and bones to do that amount of running, man. I missed the gym the other day and decided to take a jog outside. After about 20 minutes, my shins and ankles hurt so bad I had to walk for the rest of the way. I'm still feeling the soreness/shin splints today. I'll let you do my share of the running. Peace

Day 33

5-12-08
Day Shift

Today I was very happy to see a very low number on the scale. 221.8. Haven't been there in a while. I was glad because last night at Mom's I didn't pig out, but I wasn't as good as I might be. A happy medium.

I didn't even try to get up early to work out. I figured that I'd do it after work. Good thing, because the supervisor really pissed me off today. I could get my frustrations out at the gym. Much better that way then pinching his beady little head right off at the neck. Tomorrow will be better.

I had a bowl of cereal and two mugs of coffee for breakfast. Lunch was a wonderful zucchini and asparagus egg white omelet. Oh, so good. Snack was plain yogurt and some honey. (gotta have me honey)

Came home and did some stuff with the kids. Made dinner of home made applesauce, onion/boc choi/ and asparagus stir fry, and thin pork chops on the broiler. Came out good, but I think next time I'll do it on the grill. (I don't know why I didn't think of the grill before)

After dinner I went to the gym. Flash work out. I did a bunch of exercises with little or no rest between. Just jumped from one to the next and was out of there in no time. Got home before the kids had to go to bed. Not a bad use of time.

I'm hoping that the scale is nice to me tomorrow.

A lot of time what people call shin splints is just the muscle on the front of the shin being sore. If you build that muscle up you won't get that any more.

Of course real shin splints is something different. That's the bone actually getting small fractures, but that's really rare. (I'm not a doctor, and I don't even play one on TV, so don't take any medical advice from me)

Day 34

5-13-08
Day Shift

Today was not bad. I didn't eat breakfast, which is bad. I ate a pear on the way to work and had my coffee, but at break time I just didn't feel like making anything, so I didn't. By lunch I was hungry, but not starving, so I made some zucchini and asparagus with egg whites. Another pear for a snack. I came home and made some burgers on the grill for an early dinner. I was hungry then and I ate two. Didn't care, either. It was good.

After dinner I went mountain biking. Man, it kicked my ass. I went with a friend who is a little better biker then I and I got stuck on a couple hills. Only wiped out twice, once was a bad one where I was upside down and the bike was on top. (clip in shoes have their disadvantages, too) Luckily I wasn't going fast, which is why I wiped out. Just petered out going up a steep incline. The other wipe out was in some sand on a turn and it didn't hardly slow me down, right back up and going.

One more pear after biking and then to the cigar shop. I didn't smoke because I wanted to get home. Just stopped in to say hi. I feel like all this exercise is really cutting into my family time. I skip dinner with everyone to go do some exercise. I should get up early, but then I'd be going to bed that much earlier and I'd be skipping the time spent with F after the kids go to sleep. I really don't want to do that. I'll figure something out. I can't/shouldn't skip workouts just because I'm on day shift. I'm having a hard enough time getting things going when on midnights. Damn, midnights start Saturday night. Hopefully this time I can make some progress.

On a different note. This morning I weighed in at 220.8. .8 more pounds and I'm officially half way there. That will be good. My clothes are noticeably looser. My belt is just one notch from the last one. I can notch the last hole, but it's a wee bit tight for comfort. I've been wearing a 38 waist, which was getting a tad tight before I started, but I easily fit in my 36s. They are even a bit loose. I'm tempted to get a pair of 34s just to see how tight they are, and use that as motivation to get into them. That would be something. Maybe tomorrow.

Day 35

5-14-08
Day Shift

I usually write this later in the day, but I'm excited today. To start with I weighed in at 219.4. That's past my half way point. I'm very happy about that. Secondly I rode my bike into work today. It's not all that far, but the bike I take is a cruiser that weighs 45 lbs, only has three speeds, and big fat tires. It takes a lot of energy to move. I had to get up early and leave enough time to get here, and it took 51 minutes. No stopping. I think it's more up hill on the way here. That might change on the way home. I'll have to see.

I got to work and downed a pear and a banana for breakfast and my coffee. Skipped any real breakfast, and now it's lunch so I'm having a Progresso light soup. 120 calories for the can. I know that I need more food, especially with the ride home coming up. (I thought that someone would be buying us lunch today, but that didn't happen. Probably a good thing that he didn't)
