Tinysara's weight loss diary extrordinare!

Fish: Heya! The shin pain is on either side of my shin bone, all the way down the length. Upon impact when I'm running, it feels like my shin is wrapped in bamboo, and each step feels like my leg is trying to bust out of the bamboo, splitting it kinda.... I know that's really specific haha but it explains what I mean. Talked to my Sensai and he said it sounds like shin splints, and if I get the pain again to just do my run on the elliptical so there's no impact. Probably a good idea. I thought it was just pain from being a new runner and I could push through it but I guess not!

About the belt/baggy pants thing: I was thinking of trying to conserve my pants, but then I realized that I absolutely DESPISE the feeling of baggy jeans on my thighs. I don't know why, but I insist that jeans fit like a glove! So unfortch I can't pull off that kind of thing...But anyways, good luck when you all finally do go shopping, it's SO fun to come home with a bunch of new pants that look GOOD!

Entry:

Yesterday was a great day. Managed to go to class, go to karate, AND squeeze in a 4 hour nap! Awesome!

Here's what I ate:
Breakfast: boost shake
lunch: 1/2 tuna sandwich
before karate snack: 1 piece of whole grain with PB and J *woo!*
Dinner: Broccoli and 1/2 cup of spanish rice (wasn't hungry)
Also had a sliver (literally, 1/2 an inch wide) of my roommate's deep dish pizza.

My calories for yesterday was around 1099, carbs about 120.

Karate was AWESOME. We did a different workout routine this time and I was SWEATING!

"Holy Fields"
you're partnered up with one person. They hang out while you do the following:
-sprint to the wall and back
-jumping knees to the wall and back
-10 jumping squats
-grapevine run to the wall and back
-wheelbarrow walk to the middle of the room, 10 pushups, wheelbarrow walk back
-jumping knees again, to wall and back
-Tag your partner, they begin their routine
-While they're doing their thing you do 5 burpees

We did this whole sequence twice, so everyone did it twice. My partner and I ended up being the fastest (it's kind of like a race) so I was pretty proud :)

After the warm up we did more jiu jitsu (YAY!) and I got complimented on my triangle choking and rear-naked choking abilities :) After that I did some light sparring with a guy in my class and then some heavier sparring with my sensai. I'm bruised as hell :( Oh well, I felt like I worked a lot of muscle groups and I'm very tired and sore today. Oh, and my Sensai was teaching me how to get out of a rear-naked choke. It was very painful and my chin/neck hurts a lot today, but I did eventually get out of the choke :) Yay for me!

Not sure if I mentioned it here or not but I've been having this problem lately where my fingertips from the middle-knuckle-down are pale blue. I notice it even more when I'm working out. I've been diagnosed with low blood pressure and low iron, but I've never really had this happen before. I've been trying to increase my iron intake lately but I guess it's not working! Ah well. If it goes on for much longer I'll head to the doctor to see what's up.

Hope y'all had productive days!
Sara

A lot of times what people think are shin splints is really the muscle that runs along the shin is sore. It's the muscle that pulls your foot up. One exercise that helps is sit and stretch out your leg one at a time and point your toe. Then pull your foot so that it's pointing up as much as possible quickly. Then stretch it back pointed.

Be careful with the low blood pressure thing. As you get in better and better shape your blood pressure naturally drops, so if it's low to begin with, that can make it really drop to dangerously low levels. It happend to my sister while driving and she passed out. Not a good thing.

Trops is right. That muscle was what I buggered up when I ran my 8 mile race. Mine was pretty bad. Put your fingers on that muscle along your shin and move your foot up and down. Do you feel a 'grinding' sensation? That's what I had and it had me out of commission for a month.

Try the elliptical machine and see if it's any better but I would definitely recommend taking it easy while you're experiencing that pain and work your way back up to the intensity level you're aiming for.

From another thread...

Comments on my journal :)

Being able to really push myself in a workout, write about it here, and have complete strangers tell me that I did a great job. It is just the most incredibly supportive thing I've ever experienced!

Remember, commplements aren't just handed out... they are EARNED, and you have been doing a wonderful job earning them! :) Keep it up!

Hey all! How's it goin'!

Trops: Hey pal, thanks for the warning. I started to think about it and what you said made quite a bit of sense. It would also explain my high heart rate during exercise. Low blood pressure would need to be compensated for during exercise by a high HR. I'll head to the doc if it continues. I did those stretched you told me about :) Not sure if they helped, my shins still hurt after the run (I did the stretch before AND after). Thanks for visiting!

Fish: Heya :) No grinding sensation, but at least now the pain isn't upon impact! Yay!! It did hurt quite a bit after the run, but it was probably a combination of that and my sore shins from blocking kicks in Karate. God, that hurts.

Onto today:

So yesterday I had a pretty great day.
Yesterday's Food:
Breakfast: boost
Lunch: 1/2 tuna sammich
dinner: Broccoli, small 1/2 cup of rice, breaded fish (sorry!)
snack: 1 peanut-butter chocolate chip cookie (now how did that get in there...)

So by the end of the day I was sittin' pretty around 1130 cals and 108 carbs. Still trying to get my carbs as low as possible, really could have done without the rice/cookie! I'll have to pick up some whole grain rice instead.

Went for my run, and it was great. I really pushed myself to go even faster than before! Even increased the speed of my walking periods.
this week's run schedule is:
-5 min brisk walk at 5.8 miles/hr
-90 seconds running at 6.2miles/hr
-2 minutes walking at 5.8 miles/hr
for a total of 25 minutes. I really wanted to hit 2 miles earlier than usual, so I pushed myself pretty hard. This resulted in my HR going even higher than before, upto 192! Grr! Is that even possible?? Same mill as last time too, and I've used the other mills and they all say the same thing about my HR. Maybe I'll just ask for a HR monitor for Christmas, then I'll know what's really going on.

I was so tuckered out lastnight that I went to bed around 9:30! Omg. And I was almost late for school this morning! God, there must be something wrong with me, haha.

Today I have been eating wonderfully aswell.

Breakfast: Boost shake
Lunch: 1/2 egg salad sammich
snack: probably going to grab an apple before karate
dinner: TBD, I really need to go grocery shopping. Might end up with Broc and fish again, but I'm running out of sauces! All my soy is gone :(

Tonight is Karate and I think we're doing more standup fighting today. It will give my neck/chin a nice break...Also, i really need to work on my fighting. As you can imagine I have the shortest arms ever and It's very hard for me to land a shot.

I know this sounds crazy but I've been thinking about taking up wrestling. I noticed the other day that the wrestling girls are my exact body type! I've never thought of an athlete as looking anything like me...I just think it would be so awesome if I could become really great at it and maybe even compete at a varsity level by the time I'm done school! Imagine that. I'm sure it's all a pipe dream. However the team practices Monday, Wednesday and Friday for like 3 hours, so even if I didn't go far it's still be a killer workout. I'd like to drop more weight before I do that though, and gain more muscle.

Anyway enough of my crazy rambling. Have a great day folks :)

Gosh the fact that you're so active makes me jealous, hehe. I've been wanting to do kickboxing for YEARS now, maybe i'll pick that up once I get smaller. Oh and when you say wrestling is this like the wrestling they do in highschool or some other kind of wrestling.

About being tired, maybe it's fatigue. I definitely have fatigue, but it's caused by mental stress more so than anything physical.

Anyways, seems like everything is going well and I really hope it is.

Jz: Thanks so much buddy, you're too good to me! however I deserve a good ol' JZ ass whoopin' for today's foods :(!

Diamonds: Hey girl! Glad to see you back in here! :D Believe me, I used to want to do as minimal exercise as possible...But once I got accustomed to healthy eating, I had a natural drive to get my butt moving! So maybe once your body is fine with not munchin' on carbs when it wants to, you'll have all that energy too. I seriously see it like an addiction that I'm getting over. The other day my S.O. Kev gave me a Guilian chocolate and I told him it was 'too sweet'!!! I HAVE NEVER said that about ANYTHING in my LIFE! I don't have that 'too sweet' reflex, but it seems I've developed it! Anyways, keep your chin up, you're doing really well and your head is in the right place. Oh, and yeah, I mean highschool wrestling. We didn't have it in my highschool though :(!

Familyweese:Hey Candy! Thanks for comin' by, and for wishing my shins better :) They're getting a lot better actually, now the pain just seems to have migrated to my inner calf...on one leg only....weird weird weird! It'd be nice if it sorted itself out, so here's hoping.

Today's entry:

Today I exercised like a king and ate like a slob! My ladytime might have something to do with it, OR maybe the fact that the craft fair is in town and the FUDGE KIOSK and Jams/preserves kiosks are there but food was in the shits today.

Started out okay:
Breakfast: boost shake
Lunch: 1/2 tuna sammich
-went to fair, bought 4 chutneys/butters...And raspberry honey...had to sample them first (small bit on a cracker!)
'Snack'- had about a tablespoon of raspberry honey...17 carbs later...
Dinner: Got stuck eating on campus, had BBQ rib on a wrap from Subway. Consists of: Tortilla, lettuce, rib patty, bbq sauce.

Don't even know how many calories dinner would have been. I know BBQ Rib wasn't the best choice but it's the only thing I've tried there other than the Cold Cut Trio, and we all know how unsuspectingly high in calories that one is!

On the way back from Subway was somehow possessed into buying a 'Skinny Mint Chocolate Latte'...Sugarfree syrup and fat free milk makes it 'skinny'...Just a waste of money and empty calories, I felt so dumb that I only drank half of it.

Went to a friend's house to watch Grey's Anatomy. There was popcorn, I had about 2 handfuls (though i do have small hands, a handful is probably about 5 kernels) and a bite of someone's bowtie pasta. Not really sure why I'm Little Miss Snacks-A-Lot today, rather annoying.

My workout on the other hand was awesome! Increased all my speeds AGAIN and reached 2 miles even FASTER than before! I had to get off a little bit early though because for some reason I've been really crampy (crappy :() all day...Probably to do with the ladytime, again. Running when you're feeling like that is terrible (ESPECIALLY because the girl's bathroom is on the ENTIRE OTHER SIDE of the goddamn building and requires a trip DOWN STAIRS and about a KM AWAY...) So anyways, cut my cool down a bit short. Other than that though, Epic run.

Not much else to report. Going to be insanely busy the next 2 weeks. Lab final this wednesday, finals on Monday, Wed and Fri of next week, all at 8:30AM. FUN! Needless to say I'm studying already. In one of the courses, the final is worth 80%. Good god. Wish me luck.

Tiny out y'all

Hey tinysara,

How are your shins doing? I'm actually surprised that you have any being a smaller lighter person usually it doesn't bother people of your size as much. Then again, you are pushing your body to intense activity levels that it previously hasn't seen.

Wrestling is awesome and if you really have the motivation and drive for it you should do it. I wrestled in from middle school through high school and it was a blast. The only thing that really sucks is the uniforms, oh, and when you slam the coaches son too hard and do laps for the rest of the season.....

Not to mention you will have a good base already since being in bjj which will make you a quick learner. One thing you'll have to really get out of your mind is being on your back is bad in wrestling lol.

Good luck with whatever you decide!

Just a thought... maybe you were "little miss snacks-alot" due to being hungry!! I see you are kickin ass with the workouts... maybe you need to increase your HEALTHYfood intake and include more protein??? Just a few thoughts... I don't know. :)

Panda: Hey! The shins are doing much better. The pain is more of a dull ache on the inside of my calf which I can now safely assume is just 'getting-used-to-running-pain'. Thank god!! I'm really interested in starting up wrestling, I can't wait until next semester to join the club. Not really excited about the singlet though. Ah well. Sorry to hear that you had to do LAPS just for slamming a kid! That really sucks :( I hope at the varsity level that the coach's kid isn't on the team! Thanks for comin' by :)

JZ: Hey pal! thanks for the encouragement. It very well could be that I'm actually hungry, although I don't FEEL hungry. I'm really bad at listening to my body, and to me, 'hunger' is only when your tummy is making audible growling noises. I'll wait until this ladytime crap is done with and then see if I've been eating based on hunger or craving. I'm just really scared about increasing my cals!

This weekend was a wash, although I think I managed to stay under 1500 cals each day. Terrible things were eaten: Fudge, honey, more fudge...Only a few bites though, but if we're talking about fudge, that's still a LOT of fudge.

I've been on campus all weekend studying, which means eating on campus all weekend, which is generally bad. Today, I've been eating like it's my job.

Foodz:
Breakfast: weird Selba nutrition bar...prob about 200cals?
lunch/dinner: BBQ rib sub on a wrap (crap!) and an apple (4:30 pm is a bad time for lunch/dinner)
after dinner snack: latte and fat free muffin (double crap!)

TODAY WAS THE BEST JIU JITSU DAY EVERRR!!! OMG! I almost didn't go, ALMOST, and then I was like "hey, it's procrastination, I like to procrastinate!" So I went, and there was this girl there who was a bit better than me, and we sparred for like 45 minutes solid! Rolling around for 45 minutes using every muscle! IT WAS AWESOME! I was sweating like a Tijuana whore! AND the people who've been working with me on BJJ have noticed MARKED improvements in my skills! AND they're all stoked about me starting wrestling! YAY!!! :D:D This makes me so happy!

AND THEN, and then, get how hardcore this is: I went for my run immediately after BJJ, starting a newer HARDER running schedule:

-brisk 5 min walk
-run 90 seconds
-walk 90 seonds
-run 3 minutes
-walk 3 minutes

Repeat twice! And I was able to fully complete it! Wicked eh?! And after that I went back and did some MORE light sparring with the BJJ guys! Best day ever. I guess I burned a lot of calories and that's why I've been so snacky today, but then again I am known for eating unnecessarily while studying.

Anyways sorry for this kind of lame update but I was just really stoked on the productive day!!
Have great weeks y'all! Stay positive!

Tiny izz-out

Hey,
I have been following your diary but you had enough support, so I just skimmed it and moved on to less popular diaries. But you are doing a great job! I envy your activity levels, I wish I could bring myself to do that much exercise daily!
I also think you may want to increase your food, it doesn't look like you eat enough, maybe more veggies and fruit ;) (I am a veggie and fruit whore!) Remember that this is not a diet, but a lifestyle change and if you go hungry you will be less likely to maintain this for a long time!

About the iron: I know you eat broccoli, but how about trying green peas or spinach? Both are full of iron, and then maybe red meat every now and then (and yeah BBQ ribs is ok, but steak would be better), that could boost your iron levels. If you are chronically anaemic they will give you iron pills and apart from being yucky in taste (think blood in your mouth) they make you very constipated, so you should really try to fix it by modifying your diet!

What are you studying? Good luck with it, I am out of uni for the first time in 6 years and it is glorious! Not having to study, that is! Not so glorious that once you are out the social life goes down quite a bit!
Have a great week, Camy

Terrible things were eaten: Fudge, honey, more fudge.

:smash: What that about honey being terrible? :smash:

Sounds like a great workout. Th running is going really good, too. You might try increasing the time you run to be slightly more then the time you walk. You keep changing that up till after a while it's all running .

Hi tinysara...I popped into your diary as reluctantcabbie told me about your shin prbs and some ppl having some advice abt them.

I to am experiencing cramping in my shins. It isnt my leg muscels either it is my actual shins.Nothing i have found stops them or works and they get so bad that walking is a real struggle.

I can start out jogging but i get the cramps and once they hit i can only walk.and picking up my feet to walk is a struggle.

It seems to only happen to me when I am walking briskly and trying to run other than that all is good adn i dont really understnad it.

Im working on uping my protein and drinking gator ade for elctrolights wearing long johns in case it is the trasforing form hot to cold...my next step is to try new shoes, I even take advil before working out:(

Do you find it as frustrating as i do?

Hey guys! I'll reply to y'all after my exam tomorrow, I'm just about to collapse from tired-ness and wanted to update quick.

Yesterday: ate well, didn't go to karate because I came home after class and slept until it started, I was feeling super nauseous and weak for some reason :(

Today: epic gym day. Did my run AND a full hour on the recumbent bike...Low effort, I was just studying and wanted to burn some cals at the same time. Worked out great! Got TONS of studying in.

I should mention: In December of last year I had a breast augmentation surgery. I was born with a breast deformity resulting in one being quite different in size and shape from the other. Well I got it fixed, an implant in both to change size and shape (and got to pick whatever size I wanted! Fun :) ) I've had little-to-no problems with the implants, but in BJJ on sunday my friend essentially somersaulted over me putting the entirety of his weight on his shoulder, on my right breast. Well, it was excruciatingly, epically painful, still is, and I think it might have ruptured. I have silicone gel ones so it's not easy to tell when it's popped.

Anyways, so my christmas break might be more eventful than expected. And, my poor tit really fucking hurts :(! I'm probably going to get an MRI within the next few weeks to check for a rupture, wish me luck that I don't need another surgery! :(

much love y'all
be back tomorrow, wish me luck on the final also :)
Sara

Sara, wow, as much as part of me would love to run wild with the whole breast augmentation thing (me here, who else), Ouch, that sounds painful...:(

I really do hope its all good and you're jus a little bruised up or something but... yeah, get it checked out...

Did I say ouch? OUCH!

Take care hon. Hope you do better on your exam than I did!

And, my poor tit really fucking hurts :(! I'm probably going to get an MRI within the next few weeks to check for a rupture, wish me luck that I don't need another surgery! :(

lol, i just get a giggle outta that line...Im sorry about your breast hurting and i sure hope it isnt popped and leaking, that would really suck!

I went and bought shoes today and talked tot eh guy about running and shoes and sore shins. He told me that typically ones shins start to hurt due to worn out padding, not enough padding or no padding in the front of the foot.Makes sence to me.I went ona 3 k run and did boot camp fine wiht no cramps or painful shins.

Holy shit! That's f'd up! I hope you're okay! Consider my fingers officially crossed. :D Wow. Make sure you take care of yourself!

Oh yeah, and good luck on that final. Kick its ass!

Hope your final went well for ya! Also, ditto what everyone else said. Check that out for sure, even if the "pain" goes away!:toetap05: No need to risk your health when you obviously care a great deal about it!
