Well the good news is a Tracheostomy is a fairly low risk operation however one has to guard themself for the news of extensive damage that was unseen till opening. I hope you and your family stay upbeat for the inflicted and administer compassion and aid in his comfort.
I agree with Debi that a medical adviser may be a good choice to get some 'commonspeak' injected into the conversation but also prepare for fast, standing-on-your-feet thinking in a crisis situation. It's best to know the inflicted's final wishes and preparations in advance. For many, they don't wish to be left in a vegetive state. If you are all crystal clear on his wishes, the decisions the doctors ask of you will be simpler and can be made without pulling your own emotions into it to the point where you make a bad (or unwanted) decision.
As much as we hate this topic, sometimes we have to let them walk towards the light - it's the most humane thing to do.
As for me exercising, I'm on my 4th day of R&R. I miss walking and will return when my leg heals, which won't be too long.
