The mind is the enemy

LJ and Cate!! So many friendly faces! Well, Cate's is friendly, yours is a little intimidating, LJ ;)

(I kid, I kid)

Don't let me leave again, ok? It will take me a bit to properly catch up on how you are all doing but just give me a little time.

I had a therapy session today and I came back refreshed. Just polished off some fruit for an afternoon snack, and I believe there is some sort of barley soup in my future. This will mark the first time barley had ever entered our kitchen, so wish me luck.

Welcome back!

Big congratulations on the pending nuptials!

This year is going to be phenomenally fantastic for you!

Q, my fellow oak! I love your current picture. Thank you, I'm kinda looking forward to 2017, not gonna deny that. And now that I'm starting the year off with you guys things are looking even better.

The soup turned out great, LaMa! I can take absolutely zero credit for that. We've never had beef and barley soup but G did a good job, especially since he came up with the idea to make it while we were in the bulk aisle at the grocery store and he just happened to see barley. My mind doesn't work like that.

Soup with barley? Hell yeah!!! I could eat barley in soup every day of the week. Well, depending on what kind of soup it was. Claw Chowder with barley? No thanks.

I don't think I had any idea what barley was before but I'm totally on board now. Chef, are there other uses for barley in the kitchen or is it primarily soup? I could google this, but why bother when I've got expertise right here??

LaMa, if you find yourself another Hot Traveler whose name starts with a G you better take that as a sign!

I've been trying to think about some goals. I've struggled in the past with just saying "eat better" and not really choosing anything quantifiable. I had decided years ago on an arbitrary weight goal but that was before I ran a marathon and before I started CrossFit. My opinions on what a female body "should" look like have definitely changed. The different bodies I see every day killing it with the barbells has helped me learn that waist size means nothing and big thighs can be amazing. But back to goals, here are the two that I'm currently thinking about:

Run twice a week. I have not run consistently since my marathon in May, with the exception of a 20+ day run streak (it was supposed to be 39 days but balancing running and CrossFit proved to be not worth it to me). I've got a treadmill now that I live in a house. No excuses. I last ran on New Year's Day, so I've got some progress to make here.

Log what I do with my alone time after dinner. Some of you might remember that one of my huge issues is binging while the G-dawg is in the shower after dinner. It got to the point where I would get some cookies, sit down on the couch and eat them, and then just go back and forth from the couch to the freezer until the water shut off. Or I'd mix it up with gummy bears or whatever else was around. I've talked about this with my therapist and we are working right now on just being more mindful of what I'm doing and keeping track of it. Today during "shower time" I hopped on here and wrote this entry :)

I need to set small goals for now so as tempted as I am to keep going I am ending this here. And that's not just because I heard the water shut off and the dishes I was supposed to do haven't been done yet.

Although that may be part of it.

Soups and stews are the primary vehicle in which barley is often used. However, you can also make salads (cold or warm) with it. I've seen (and made) many recipes where you cook barley and mix it with onion, celery, carrot or other cut up vegetables, toss it in some sort of dressing (oil, vinegar, balsamic vinegar, etc) and serve it either hot or cold. You can also, if you're daring, make bread with it.

Hmm, Chef, that sounds like a meal I used to make with wheatberries, which I absolutely loved cold for lunches. Except then I bought a massive supply of a different brand of wheatberries that didn't cook the same. I'll have to try it with barley, thank you!

Finding ways to keep busy during the time you´d normally overeat sounds like a massive cut in the less helpful kind of calories. Go you!

Is barley the same as pearl barley? If so, I use it instead of rice for curries and chillies. Nom nom nom.

I would solve shower time problem by getting in with him. Win Win.

LaMa, that's what I‘m figuring, it's amazing how much damage can be done in such a short amount of time. Plus, if I'm being honest, I'd often still have another snack later if I hadn't owned up to what I had already eaten.

Hana one sad realization we had upon moving is that our master shower is definitely not big enough for two!

Well, barley's an easily-tradable commodity for use in soups, breads, beer, and farm feed; can be utilized in multiple applications; and has no emotional strings attached.

Nerd alert - I recently started making my own snack bags out of freezer paper, an iron, and scalloped edge scissors and I LOVE it. I don't like storing much in Ziploc bags (I swear I can taste it) and carrying around tiny plastic containers was getting old. Now I have all these single serve bags of grape nuts, mixed nuts, etc that are sized appropriately and open just like regular snack bags you'd buy. I'm kind of obsessed.
