The mind is the enemy

You've been killing it with your running! Happy belated birthday!

I don't have a big sweet tooth, but dates seem to do the trick when I am craving sweets. They have a lot of sugar, but their high fiber makes them have a much lower glycemic index and a lot harder to overdo.

You know what's funny, Q, is that I gave very similar advice to LJ recently. If we only we all practiced what we preached.

Stacy, if I want chocolate I need to compromise and have chocolate chips mixed with some other health stuff..... Not the peanut butter chips I mixed them with last time, whoops.

Faaaakin' hell :D What a morning run in the city! Ha ha, 'boring' suburbs all the way :D

I miss decent parks and greenery in general. The parks in the Asia Pacific suck, they are full of concrete!

So you have a half marathon this weekend too? Best of luck!!

Delsid, seriously, I'm lucky to have so many options for where I can run so I'll be avoiding the crazy stuff as much as possible! I actually decided against the half marathon, it would have meant two hours driving (round trip) and it was annoying that I would still have to run five additional miles. I'm just going to do my 18 miles close to home. Thankfully I hadn't actually signed up for it so I didn't have to worry about losing any money.

Having good places to run makes such a difference.

Good luck with your run anyway. 18 miles sounds insanely far for me right now. But I AM going to sign up for a marathon in the near future, basically as soon as I know where I'm going to be based come September.

When is your race?

The 18 miles took me 3 hours and 44 minutes. I stopped twice for the bathroom (once out of necessity, once just precautionary). Cate, sometimes I think I am going to die when I'm running....especially when I reach a nasty hill at mile 13, ugh!

Delsid my race is on May 15th. Only two more super long runs to go! The rest are 13 or less. Which is still long but considering I'm running 12+ minute miles that's an HOUR less on my feet.

Thanks Cory! I'm keeping it slow and it hasn't been tooooo bad yet. But man, do my quads get sore!

Speaking of quads, mine have gotten significantly bigger during training. Went clothes shopping yesterday and the waist of all the pants I tried on were too big but my quads were squeezed in like sausages. I haven't lost ANY weight, but I wasn't expecting to. I am eating better, though. Last week was my monthly eat-all-the-sugar week, and I definitely reigned it in. Still ate sweets, but kept the quantity down.

18 miles....

Eeeek running for 3 hours 44 minutes...Well done!!!

Those 2 hours were enough for me at this point but I'm definitely mentally preparing myself for longer runs. I think mental training is as important (or more?) than actually running those distances. Still though, right now I can't imagine running 3 hours on my own - it's so much easier when you have all those people around you during a race. But once I choose a race there will be no going back :D

Happy training! Not long to go!

18 miles is insanely awesome! Did you eat and drink during? I would imagine that two bathroom breaks is a minimum for that time frame. Keep kicking ass!

Aww, you guys are all so great! I've been bad about keeping up with everyone else, so I thank you all for the continued support. I've definitely been eating everything in sight (I ran 30 miles last week!) and I'm fully slacking on my veggies. I've got some frozen cauliflower in the freezer that I am determined to remember come dinner time tonight!

Q I use gels for fueling, one every hour or so. Huma gel, specifically, it's made with chia seeds and is actually quite delicious. (Except the lemonade flavor, that one tastes like furniture polish). Last week I took some gummy bears, too, but those got pretty hard because it was cold outside. There are a few different food stops at the marathon (watermelon, bananas, m&ms, etc, but I haven't tried any of that mid-run just yet). I carry a water bottle with me that I refill if needed as I loop by the house. Running gets complicated when you do it for hours.

Delsid I figure if I can run that long by myself I should be happy come race day to actually not be all alone! Mental training is huge....there are a million people who could do marathons who just don't want it bad enough to commit to the training. And that's totally fine, everyone's goals are different. Unfortunately there are also lots of people who would commit 100% but their bodies disagree with that plan. I consider myself very lucky that my body has cooperated so nicely.

Yay for strong thighs! And screw the people who design clothes only for folk with tiny appendages. They have as much right to exist and be happy as anyone, but us other people want to be comfortable, too.

Yay for strong thighs & legs indeed & boo to the fashion industry that decries that women should look like stick insects. I like being shapely & strong!

I clean and floss my teeth straight after dinner. It's not completely fool proof, but I find I'm less likely to eat after I clean my teeth.

Shapely and strong is DEFINITELY the way to go, ladies!!! I'm glad everyone is in agreement. I went indoor rock climbing with my family last weekend and my mom took a bunch of pictures of me while I was doing a forty foot wall with my little brother. I looked through all the pictures and was just looking for the ones that showed off my calves, because running has definitely treated them well, too. If anyone has gone rock climbing, they'll know that most of the pictures are quite awful, just big ol' butts in their most unflattering state. But I'm happy I was able to look past that and see the good.

Running has been great. This week I got to 33 miles overall, with the long run being 19 miles yesterday (Saturday). Average pace was 12:05 per mile, meaning just about 3 hours and 50 minutes total. The worst part - about 17 miles of those were in the rain. I stopped at the house around mile 11 and changed everything but my underwear, and 4 miles later I was absolutely miserable. But I survived that mental challenge and I feel like if I can get through that all by myself I can get through this marathon.

In other news, last weekend I saw my entire immediate family (divorced parents + 2 brothers) all at the same time for the first time in ten years. TEN YEARS. My older brother got married to a wonderful woman who we all love, and it was a magical 2 days being together. Also, my G man and I are house shopping, so today was spent wandering around at open houses. We're just getting started, and it's our first time buying, so it's exciting and stressful and time consuming. Life is busy lately, and I'm ready for it to calm down just a little bit!

Wow!!! Serious mental strength there, a MASSIVE WELL DONE!!!

Your family reunion sounds lovely, 10 years can go by scarily fast!

Good luck with house hunting!
