The big oak (Quercus) needs to drop some dead limbs!

Hi Laura! I'm slowly reigning in the calories as my body gets used to the new eating habits. It's been 10 days since I've had meat (Father's day burger at my parents). 106 is the predicted high for Friday here so that will be pleasant. My back feels really good, but I've been lazy. I need to get back on that stationary bike.

I will ride and post tonight.

hey Q! Thanks for stopping by my thread yesterday. I've been a little lax on these boards lately... not sure what it's about, but I am. However, I am still watching you and rooting for you to keep going in a positive direction. I like your new dietary regimen!

Ok so I'm tryin to put a positive slant on this Texas heat we are about to get slapped with.
1.not as tempted to eat heavy
2.lots of good fresh veggies. We have a garden going and that yummy
3. Weighing a little less makes the heat more bearable.
4. I feel really cleansed after a good ol sweaty workout.

That's my story and I'm sticking with it!

Thanks Don!

Nice spinning Brawny!

I just got back from the field and I stink. I've mostly dried out, but my aroma is rather strong. I haven't been exercising apart from the fieldwork. It's easy to get out of the habit when it's so damn hot. The diet is good other than me drinking. The back is barely an issue any more. I feel like the switch in my diet has helped me out. My bug bites and scrathces are healing quicker and I feel better in general. I'm ready to get the weekend started. I haven't weighed in a bit, but I bet I'm static. Too much beer! It's so good when it's so hot. I'm careful to drink lots of water too.

Well it's only getting up to 115 here today.

Good to hear the back is feeling better. Injuries are no fun at all.

Pretty good Sunflower. I swam on Friday night and it hurt my back, but I mowed today without issue. It was remarkably cool today. After a few days of 106 F the 80s this evening felt awesome. I hope your's was great!

Sorry to hear your back is still giving you trouble. That combined with the heat you're dealing with must make things so challenging. I'm dealing with the same thing in regards to heat. Though not to your extremes! I'm a baby when it comes to heat. I HATE it! Anything over 80° and I'm dreading working out. I'm trying to get over it though. Just do the best you can and I'm sure you'll be fine.

Hi everybody! Sorry I haven't been around for a while. I'm still going strong with the vegetarianism.

I finally went to the doctor yesterday and he gave some medication for the nerve pain and so far it has been fantastic. It's the 1st time in more than 2 months that I haven't had some level of sharp shooting pain. I realized after the medicine kicked in that I had adapted to the pain and to a large extent I wasn't as aware of it, but once it was gone I realized how bad it has been. All of my muscles in my lower body are sore from tension and favoring the other side. As that fades I'll be ready to run (Dr.'s OK).

I have an MRI tomorrow and a follow up in 2 weeks. I got all the lab work including a thyroid exam. He examined my throat and immediately asked if I'd had my thyroid checked. We'll see what comes of that. I'm so excited to finally work towards getting the back in good shape. So far I love the new doc, but he could have slapped and cussed me and I would have forgiven him after the medicine kicked in. My old Dr. could have given me this years ago when I went for him for help.

Oh well. 2 of my current medications have the side effect of weight gain. There isn't much I can do about that, but I need the medicine and the weight will do what it wants. I'm focused on getting healthy and screw the scale for now.

I promise to stick around. I have a lot of catching up to do and I will try to do that soon.

Good to see you back, Q! I think a bunch of us have been taking a little time away from the straight and narrow of late. I quoted the above because I think your head is RIGHT on the money. THIS is a winner's attitude.

Glad to see your new medicine is working better! Shame that two doctors give so different advice though?! You'd have hoped they all give the same advice hey :(

Steve

Thanks for all the welcome backs!

Steve, health care in the US is terrible in general and worse in an isolated rural locale. It will cost me over $1,600 to use my insurance for my MRI and over $500 if I pay for it out of pocket. I'm fortunate in that I can pay that on short notice, but even being employeed as a Biologist with "good" insurance I don't know what I'll do if they say I need surgery. It sucks!

Anyway on to more posiive notes. My blood pressure has steadily gone down since the pain has subsided. Today was near optimal at 186/78.

I biked 6 miles yesterday on the fixed gear bike.

I biked with my cousin yesterday and stayed at his house to hang out last night. I ended up eating meat because that's what he had and I had baked fish one day last week because I failed to bring a lunch in the field. Overall I am doing well being vegetarian, but I need to work on eliminating some junk and eating less.

I plan on making cheese this evening and riding my spin bike or running. I still have the muscle pain and soreness and the bike ride has my legs a little sore. I don't know if running will make me hurt at this point or not, but i do want to get back to it soon.

I don't intend to weigh for a while as I have 2 meds that can cause weight gain. I will keep monitoring my blood pressure and get more exercise. I also need to reign in some bad eating habits. I can do all this without a scale. I'm rather stressed about the outcome of the MRI and my bloodwork, but hopefully I can alieviate that in a healthy way and get healthy without too much medical intervention. I have the MRI tomorrow and a follow up to discuss the results of it and my blood work the following week.

Yeah you're kind of in a "first things first" situation where eventually the weight will be important, but for now making sure everything else is in line obviously trumps that.

I was ridiculously fortunate in that I had very few medical issues because of my weight, the ones I did have are gone with the weight, and that I haven't yet injured myself exercising. As proud as I am of myself, there was a certain amount of luck involved too. The only permanent damage I did was I'm minus one gallbladder from a couple of years ago. Stay well.

SOOO happy you got to the doctor and that he ended up being a good one!! It's amazing what your body can adapt to and how pain becomes 'normal.' I guess that's a good thing in general but in these days where there are so many options on how to alleviate pain you kind of want to know what you're really dealing with. Anyway, I'm glad you're feeling better and will be keeping good thoughts for all the tests and the MRI.

Thank you MrVee and Laura!

I'm a bit nervous about the MRI, but more so about the results. The dull muscle soreness has not abated as I'd hoped and I feel it crest and ebb like the sharp pain had done. I'm still day and night better than before, but something is wrong back there that isn't going away with the alleviation of the nerve pain. I overslept on Saturday and was well past the time for my pill when I woke. I had to sit very still until it kicked in. Any thought that it might be healing went out the window. Once it kicked in I was up and about and later went for a bike ride.

I'll be running or biking tonight. I've got 9 days before I find out what's going on.

Hope you'll be alright, Quercus. Hang in there, man! Great to see that you're not giving up on the exercise, even though you're not feeling well. That's some fighter's spirit!

Thanks Heretic!
