Sparrows Experiment

Merry Merry Christmas to you too Sparrow! :)

12/25-6 mi walk
12/26-4 mile run (7:55 pace), 3 mile walk PM
12/27-4 mile run (8:03 pace)

The pain in my foot vanished as quickly as it came. I don't really understand it but I took some days off running, saw that dr, and within 2 days after that I felt FINE. I now have "mole pads" under the balls of my feet when I run and I can tell thats going to be very helpful. I'm wearing athletic shoes at home while I'm on the hard floor and thats also been very helpful. I also need to get new orthotics so I'll be finding those soon. running the past few days may have been swift but loppy-and pain free. I have eaten so much junk the past few days and I don't feel like myself! I can't wait to get home and get back to normal. heading back home tonight

Diagnosis: Metatarsalgia. He ordered an xray but the wait was too long today so I may opt not to do it. I'm going to be gone the next few days. Anyway he said there wasn't enough swelling to really suspect a stress fracture (THANK GOD). Said my 2nd toe is as big as my "big" toe and often that means extra stress on the metatarsals in running longer distances. Told me to get "metatarsal pads" (didn't know there was such thing) and get cozy with the pool and the bike for the next 2 weeks instead of run :(

!

Someone's being naughty after Christmas and not listening to the doctors. :yelrotflmao:

Hey Sparrow I had a crazy idea! you should come to LI for the LI Marathon in May. ;)

Yes...that IS a crazy idea! Good one FF ;)

Tic, You're absolutely right...I have no excuse but that I'm stubborn....and....well, too stubborn  My motto is something like "if it doesn't make you wince...you're fine" :)

Well - when I was stubborn and 'winced' -- it lead to the following:

(4) right knee surgeries - no cartiledge and a completely reconstructed ACL.
(1) left shoulder surgery
(1) left elbow surgery

Oh, I'm 35 yrs. by the way. I'm much faster on my runs and my strength is very good, but I had to change my philosophy on training... refer to the two articles I sent you and don't run so often. Run harder and smarter. Gives you more time to rest, and you're actually doing a better workout each time.

Food for thought!

Thanks for the reminder Jim. Its not usual that I run consecutive days. At least this time around it couldn't have been from running that I got hurt. I hadn't been running. We have a huge house full of hard wood floors and I do miles of walking within a day in my house just doing housework. I was barefoot for 2 days on it so I'm pretty certain thats what irritated the metatarsal heads.

For running I typically do 3 times a week during long distance run season and 2 times a week of each of the 3 disciplines in tri season. I will be trying the philosophy of harder and smarter this coming season though. I found those articles very interesting.

I never walk around barefoot and I put over the counter orthotics in my slippers. It's purely proactive but I'd rather do that then get injured.

<big sigh>I guess I need to come to grips with the fact I'm getting "old"er and walking around barefoot-summer or not-just ain't what is used to be. Funny, I actually did the orthotics trick with the slippers yesterday. Great minds think alike. I've either been doing that or wearing my running shoes all over the house.

Question: I have prescription orthotics (made from a cast) and I got them 2 years ago. They aren't good inevitably right? Whats the shelf life on those suckers? Besides them..if I were to go get some "over the counter" orthotics which is the best? I have a high arch, under pronate (supination) and carry a lot of the beating in the balls of my feet.

GREAT workout today. Felt amazing

60 min spin-worked SUPER hard and had lots to give

30 min HIIT alternated 2 min 9mm pace/1 min 6mm pace (10 times)

Upper body weights

Depending upon the material, they can last quite a long time. I remember seeing some made out of carbon fiber and being told they would only need to be recovered.

I like the SuperFeet brand. For slippers, bike shoes, and dress (aka work) shoes, I use the black. For running shoes, I use blue or orange. With a high arch, you might try green.

I was thinking... maybe they make colors specifically for women. On their website, they have yellow and pink. Yellow appears to be a new color for cycling and pink are for women. They sell them at Sportsbasement, Fleet, and various other stores. You might check with them to see if they are unisex or if you need a specific color -- cuz you're a girl. :)

Thanks, I'll do some investigating.

Swim 2500 today. BORING. I did 8x300 and a 100 cool down.

I was slated to ride with a group this afternoon 45-50 mi but it just got called off because of the fog...CRAP I was super duper looking forward to it.

you're not that only one sparrow. i was walking around on tuesday all day at the water park with barefeet and i was in a decent amount of pain by tuesday night. enough to make me wince...my right big toe and index toe were unhappy. felt fine the next morning, but all the walking and stair climbing at blizzard beach was rough.

Went to tri class today after a few leg weights. They pretended to forget my name, its been so long! We did a 12 station "obstacle" course full of plyometrics, sprints and other various conditioning things. It was pretty rough and almost completely anaerobic. VERY hard for me, and certainly not my forte. Afterwards we did a bunch of strength moves with bosu for legs and a ton of core work.

Tonight I did 4 easy miles at 8:11 pace.

What is this tri class and who holds it? Is it at a gym?

Yes we have a triathlon class at our gym. Its 2 days a week for 90 min. I instruct it as a sub and the instructor is pretty good. Shes like Gillian on "The Biggest Looser" :) She pushes the group. It was a class I joined when I was first introduced to triathlons and after a season I felt like I needed more of a challenge so I stopped going and started doing my own plan. I go every once in a while when they do sprints or plyometric stuff...becuase its stuff I don't like to do on my own-and I don't push myself hard with unless someone is yelling at me :)

Ran 8 miles with the running club today and I SMOKED it! It was FREEZING (34 degrees this morning) with 20mph gusts but I had a wonderful run!

My hamstrings were still sooo tight from that tri class madness on Thurs so I was worried about hurting during the run. They did hurt, but I was able to push through. There were 17 of us and a guy broke away early. I kept my sight on him and broke away a bit later when I thought I had something to give today. Ended up at 1:02...7:45 min pace! It was out of my comfort zone, but thats where i need to be more and more to be where I want to be
