Sparrows Experiment

Wow, today was a horrible workout. How quickly it happens :( We did a mini triathlon at the gym just to work on transitions. Only half mile in the pool, 30 min spin and 30 min run. My pool workout sucked. I felt out of breath the whole time and just drained. It was weird. I guess I haven't been swimming much, but I don't think I should have been so winded. Spin after the swim was hard. I was just tired from a mere 36 laps. The spin teacher is a triathlete and a friend and made me the "example" the whole time..which was extra hard and embarassing. The run was fine but I have a bad habit of getting up really close to the bar of the tread and then I pump my arms up by my shoulders...very bad form. I try to back away farther back on the thing but I always end up back there. Anyway, our instructor pointed it out to me (like I didn't know) but then I had a crap run cause I was thinking about it so hard.
All in all I felt bad and like I was going to puke the whole time cause my body couldn't handle the intensity for some reason today. I've decided to do the sprint distance triathlon next weekend instead of the olympic. Its way too hot here (100 by 11am) and I just won't have fun if I try for more than that this time around. I'll have one more shot at it in September when its cooler. Plus I'd like to see what I can get on that course now that a bunch of other people in our group have gotten a time for it.

hey there,
i read that "out of breath feeling" and i learned a trick. This may be lementary but it may help.
If i get hyperventilated a tinch, it feels the same as out of breath. i found that if i skip a breath and go 6 strokes, my body will gasp just a bit, an it will set the breath tempo again. just used that lil trick on Tuesday in the Gulf.

sometimes i will also play with lil itty bity breaths every other stroke. But, i'm sure you already know-- don't mess with your breath unless your breath is messing with you.

sounds weird but it works for me in open water when i am trying to keep my face down for a full 30-45 minutes.

Todd

Thanks Todd,
I normally breathe every other stroke (yes I know this isn't correct form, but thats how I learned) so thats whats comfortable to me. I think I started my allotted time going out pretty fast, as I normally do, but without putting in my pool time for a few weeks, I wasn't up to par in the water and overestimated what I could do, funny, since swimming is "my" thing. Its my strongest leg of my triathlon. I've been so busy teaching everyone ELSE to swim that its gotten neglected. ha. Thanks for the suggestion. I'll try that next time

Finally got a decent workout in the pool today. 3500 yds of various "stuff". It wasn't too bad. I think I'm allergic to PB :( I get itchy palms in the morning every time I eat it at night. bummer.

I know! I LOVE PB...but lately its just not a happy thing. I do like almond butter...and have some...but its not the same as my natural pb. sniff :(

Well, I do make my own pb and almond butter, not at home, but its all the same. My pb and almond butter are the kind I grind right there in the store, nothing added. Its the only way I can assure my family doesn't eat "my" stuff. ha they think its nasty.

yeah, the almond butter i used to get at trader joes only had almonds so grinding it myself saves a few bucks. its pretty good, and not addicting like peanut butter is.

Hey Sparrow is there a resource online where you can find triathalons and other events?

I was reading my newspaper today and just seen they had one locally. I didnt even know about it. Im interested in trying out myself in an event but dont know where to start looking.

Went almost all weekend without a workout <gasp> I know I know....but don't fret...I did make it before the end. Tonight after a long day, and an evening of entertaining with desserts :( I went out for a jog at 9pm. I had an 8 mile route planned (new course) but I ended up with 6.4 and I did it in 50 minutes. I'm still scratching my head, cause I honestly didn't feel like i was going that fast and I even had to stop once to pee, once for a light and once to stretch cause my shins started to ache. weird. Anyway, after eating crap for dinner it did hurt a little and I felt kinda sick afterwards but I was glad i got it in.

I think it is the athlete within showing you that she is there, and wants to run free!!!! I believe that even if we abuse this body of ours, as long as we give it a chance it wants to stretch out, strain, breath, and reach for fitness.

hope you aint peeing outside lil lady! You are an athlete, and there are weirdos in them thar bushes.

FF

lol. of course I'm peeing outside...I'm a runner. lol. One of the oddest moments of my life was going to my first running race and watching runner after runner pull to the side and do their deed right there very INdiscreetly. Now I just know its a normal part of the "runners world" but its still gross and rude. I was ok last night. I actually found a port-a-potty. I wasn't as scared of the weirdos as I was of the skunks all over the place in those bushes!
