hey michelle and newleaf!
pita..mmm yes.,,oh happy day the first pita I ever had. Back in1984, Athens, Greece(ex was air force) We stopped at the first restaurant we could find there, after we got off the plane. I ordered a souvlaki with a pita wrap, and a Greek salad. I find pitas these days in the bakery section of any grocery store, ours usually has em by the deli meats. you can stuff them with anything youd put in a sandwich.
Because they are round and usually hollow, they can either be cut in half for a pocket, or left alone to make your pizza 'crust'. I just add a lil bit of yogurt and half fat feta cheese, sliced tomatoes and bell peppers and onions, sprinkled with a little low fat parmesan. Ive even done a 'salsa' pizza, with chunky salsa, and low fat cheddar. a whole pita has about 160 calories, and half for a sandwich is 80.
Greeks make it with meat on a stick(souvlaki) and theirs is usually lamb if I recall correctly. Eaten alone is good too. Their traditional Greek salad has cucumbers and tomatoes cut big, with red onions on top, a big chunk of feta(goat cheese_) and virgin olive oil with some kind of awesome tasting vinegar. plus a lil salt and pepper. Great now Im hungry!!
I am off to the grocery store, to stock up on water and such. Try these youll like em!
