Senior needs help with my work outs.

Rain and thunderstorms yesterday morning so we just got a 3 km walk in after dinner last night. The storm pushed out the humidity & it was a nice 16C temperature so we were out for 7 km this morning.

with a brand new problem... a bit of sciatica... i find walking in the morning literally makes the pain go away for the entire day. i never think about it much, but San Diego is technically a desert. i don't know how i could ever go back to waking up some mornings and having to deal with rain ... or worse.

Looking for a workout? Try being a lumberjack. I had 3 tall dying Ashe trees to take down. The first two came down relatively easy ( gas chain saw). But I broke the clutch on the saw so today the 3rd one came down Paul Bunyan style with an axe & bow saw. The pictures are too big to post, but here’s my cardio tracked on my Apple Watch.

my dad used to scrounge up some interesting tools. one i grew up with was a huge two-man saw. he found it with a broken handle and it was a simple job to him to fabricate a new one. never took down a vertical tree, but was a staple around the house in sawing up horizontal ones + a good deal of railroad ties we had to notch to make a retaining wall. chopping and sawing wood is a great workout where you actually get something done at the same time.

I saw video once of a lethal looking chainsaw. It had about 4 ft (1.2m) bar and chain with T handle on the opposing end. I would not want to be on the T handle end of that weapon.

from the NIH Library of Medicine....

"Each year over 3 million new chainsaws are sold in the United States. The operation of these newer saws combined with the millions of older chainsaws in circulation results in over 28,000 chainsaw-related injures annually."

i've never used a chain saw, but when i have the table saw going... or anything else with sharp rotating blades... i'm extremely safety minded, always wear safety glasses and plan ahead.

After walking Bella today, I looked at my cardio fitness (VO2 Max) on my iPhone. The increase in the graph corresponds right when we bought the Treadclimber last March.

Brrr! Temperatures dropped sharply here as well. Went from t-shirt and shorts weather to coats and central heating in a day.

Temperatures continue in single digits, waking up at 2-3°C in mornings and raising to a high around 10°C .
It's 8 degrees now and pouring rain for next 2 days.
With the dropping fall temperatures, we decided to start strength training again.
Saturday my wife & I did half hour with the weights.
I found a 2nd used straight bar & more weights locally so now we don't have to keep switching the weights back & forth.
2 days later we feel fine except for my thighs.
All of my sets were 3 sets of 10 reps. except my final exercise (squats). At 10 reps I was feeling ok so went to 20 reps, x 3 sets.
well they're telling me this morning (DOMS) I over did it LOL.
This is day3, so I'll be doing 30 min on the tread climber then 30 min weights this afternoon.
Will definitely back off on the squat reps.

Well done on finding the new weights & straight bar 2nd hand. It must feel good to have gone back to strength training. Oh, brr- that is cold already!

I could've sworn I'd posted here yesterday... But clearly I haven't. You're taking a day off your strength routine after every day on it, right?

Yes we alternate strength & walking days. Today it’s raining again so I did 30 minutes cardio on the Treadclimber & 30 minutes weights. Tomorrow is a lost day travelling out of town all day. Thursday will repeat today’s routine.
