Senior needs help with my work outs.

July 6, 2021.
Today marks one year since my hip replacement surgery. I am pleased to consider myself fully recovered. My weight is down to 205lbs, from 225 @ Christmas, we walk with Bella 3-5 km each day, & do regular cardio and strength training sessions.
I also resumed scuba diving after a lengthy hiatus. It feels good to be back.

Excellent! Joint replacement surgery is a big deal, regardless how often it's being done.

That must be such a good feeling. You have done really well, Mike. Back to Scuba diving too? That must feel great!

Weight is still fluctuating 205-207 lbs. Walks with Bella are consistent 5km. Today’s was my best time overall and broke 10 minutes for the last kilometre.

This week I have started wearing 5lb ankle weights, strapped to my forearms during my 5km walk (Mon & Wed) I observed a slight increase in my heart rate (10 bpm) during 4th and 5th kms. I have a little muscle fatigue feeling just after the walks, but no other ill effects. Are there any down sides to this practice. Walks are 52-53 minutes duration ( aside from getting Popey’s forearms? LOL)

5 lbs on each side shouldn't be a problem as long as your arms/shoulders don't cramp up. Too much extra weight can be unpleasant for knees and hips.

Thank you for the reply. I’m not experiencing any cramping. My wife often walks with 2lb wts in her hands & since I’m 205 lbs to her 120, I figured I could manage the 5’s ok.

We’re still in heat warning in our area (southern Ontario). The temp this morning was 23C at 7:00 am with humidex at 30C. We walked 6k but no speed records. Got home soaked. Bella went straight to the ac vent after some cool water.

It’s been several years since I walked 10 km, due to the osteoarthritis in my hip. The THR fixed that last year, & I’ve slowly building up my endurance. Today’s walk was to go the distance to 10k. Weather cooperated, 16C with slight overcast so I decided ( at about 6km) to go for it.

I can't imagine walking 10 km with the arthritis in my left knee & hip. I might talk about it a bit more next time I see the ortho. You are doing so well, Mike :)
