Thanks Maryann! I just love your posts! I just got back from an 18k run today...I am on schedule for the train up for the marathon...the trick is having walk breaks before you feel you need one! Hard to do at the beginning of a run, but worthwhile at the end of the run! It is really cold here, so I had to layer up, and then too a nice hot bath when I got back..now, I'm just lounging in my robe and having a nice lazy afternoon watching Steel Magnolias movie...I will be eating more than 1600 cal.s today..it does take some energy!
I also updated my blog today, so if you want to check out my husband and I's personal blog, here's the address:

Good choices to all!
Sarah

Sounds like you had an amazing run! Glad to hear your training is right on track. We are all so proud of you!

Thanks Alice!
Well, judging by my stiffness today, I didn't take enough walk breaks early enough...so I'll have to change up my routine in my next run. Today will be some easy elliptical and a long yoga session to stretch out! Here's a picture of running in Shenyang in the winter!
View attachment 19564

The mask came off about 1/2 way through, but coat and gloves stayed on the entire run..it was about +5F when I ran it...Thank God for layers!

I do miss cold winters. I think we've had one sub-zero day here so far this winter, all this warm weather is getting annoying.

Happy new year and great job on the continued running and elliptical sessions. In the middle of winter here so hoping to get back to running by spring.

Oh brrrrr!! Sarah you are AMAZING! Running in such cold weather. BRRRR!!! It is also wonderful that you can now say that you are happy with your body. That was a major breakthrough with me. So happy for you! xoxo Cate

Hello everyone! Thanks Maryann, Alice, Feelinggooder, Mrxian and Cate stopping by my diary! I did a 50 min elliptical run yesterday and took a break today...given the amount I ate over the weekend, I probably needed to exercise more! I just felt hungry all the time...I kept it healthy, but seemed to just have a bottomless pit! I'm feeling less hungry today, I guess the big run really took it out of me!
I go to get my visa renewed today...we will have been here 3 years in March...wow...time flies! When I look at my picture from the initial visa application, not quite the same person as several people have told me in the airport security lines!
Eating goals: Not too good this past week..over my calorie goal most every day, will need to cut back this week! (before all the Chinese new year parties!)
Motivation: good, clothes still fitting lose..not baggy, but lose
Exercise goals: good, stayed focused on the marathon trainup.

Good choices to all!
Sarah

Hey Sarah ! U are back in the grove gal ! congrats' on the 18K run & i can totally relate to the "white" setting...here's my back yard this weekend:

~ thankyou for sharing your blog address - I peeked back on some at some, what an amazing adventure you've been on for almost 3 years now in China - such a brave gal to have taken this journey - ... & You are a Totally different lady from some of those pic's back in 2010... wow...transformed... U should be so proud my friend... no wonder the visa/passport photo no longer matches U - you have changed so much...

~ I wonder if your hunger might be from all the calories you are burning with the marathon training... I am not an expert on this - but trust your body - with all the "burning" you are doing - U might actually be "needing" more fuel these days.... View attachment 19594

keep warm - .... U are braver than me - my exercise this month is indoors- treadmill & the new stepper ....

cheers,
maryann C.

Hey Ya'll,
Well, that was a fast, but long week...really cold here in Shenyang (-25C at the beginning of the week, warmed up and snowed yesterday, so we now have a fresh coat of the white stuff blanketing the city...so that poo-poo's my run in the park today. So, I guess it will be to the treadmill I go. I' m going to try a new method of the not so long (4 mile) run today...run 5 min walk 1, run 5 min, walk 1...all the way to the end of it. It is supposed to keep your legs from being sore and being able to run faster toward the end of the long run and not cost alot of time doing it. It will help me switch things up!
2 weeks until vacation...I gotta admit, I 'm ready for it! I figure I'll buy some new summer clothes on the boat and pack light..18 day cruise awaits!
Weight is holding constant...I must be eating at about the amount of energy I am spending..which is OK for me right now.
Good choices to all!

Sarah

Well, I weighed in today, and not so encouraging...176...but I am down to a real 36% bodyfat...that's about 2% down from where I was at this same weight a couple of months ago..so I think the running and yoga are adding muscle and burning fat...at least that's what I think is happening! I am going to the tailor today to get my shorts from the summer taken up so that I can wear them on the cruise...looking forward to that!
Cold and snowy here in Shenyang..so yesterday's run (12k) was on the treadmill..and I did do the run walk method (run 5 minutes, walk 1, run 5, walk 1 etc...) and then I followed that up by doing the stairs and today I must say that I am not sore at all..really feel good! So today, a little later, I'll do that again!
I read an article in a magazine about a man who has set the world record for time in a marathon for his age group (90-94!) and he did a full marathon in 6:35...that's motivation! Gives me a renewed uhumph to knock out this one on the wall come 1 May 2013. So glad I signed up for it...keeps me focused! Already thinking about what's next after that! Looking at either a full or half in Hong Kong...hmmm!
For the short term, gotta get prepared to do my runs on the boat...it will be a little monotonous running around in circles, but the weather should be nice!
Good choices to all!

Sarah

Hey Sarah.... wow - the site sure has gotten busy in the NewYr.... so many posts...

Great work on your training - 12K on treadmill took dedication - keep it rolling !! great-wall - here U come !

no worries on the scale - you are replacing fat with FIT... lol.... don't forget that muscle is more compact... so you are "smaller"...

Runnning "in-circles" on a cruise-ship.... U make me giggle- just picturing it ... but so good to plan for including exercise on your vacation ( good balance to the cruise-ship buffets...)

cheers gal, keep up the "healthY"..... I'm sure the newly tailored shorts will look great on your new stong shape !

Thanks as always Maryanne! Your posts always make me smile! I havnt been on here much, work is crazy busy right now, and by the time I get home, I'm just exhausted. 7 more days 'till vacation, and I'm in need!
I do a long run (23k is what the training plan calls for!) today, and thankfully the forecast says it should be in the teens...so warmer than this past week when it hung out around 0F and below all week!
I have attracted and caught a little runny rosé and stuffy chest...I think it's from all the pollution here...it's really heavy as you may have seen on the news.
Goals:
Scale/clothes
I didn't weigh in this week, but I am proud to report that my size 12 pants fit me great right now...not loose, but not snug either...just right. My 12 curvy pants are a tad loose in the hips and my 14p are getting a little loose in the hips, but they are chino's and I wear them on the construction site, so I like to have them loose so I can wear my long underwear under them!

Eating: still hanging out around 1600 cal/day. Most days I hit that, some days I go over by a little, some days by a lot (depends on how much I run!). The best thing is I don't crave carbs or sweets any more. My husband fixed me sliced strawberries the other night and he put artificial sweetener on them and I had to tell him that next time don't put that stuff on there...I don't want or like to put those chemicals in my body. It's in those moments that I realize that I have come such a long way and that I really do have a different lifestyle now...it's not "a diet", and that is a great feeling!
Exercise:
I continue on the marathon training. Today is a 23k day. I will do the run/walk method and I'm sure by the past experience now that I will recover a lot faster and still get the benefit. It took me awhile to get my ego to do it, but I'm sold now! I did a couple of sessions on the treadmill during the week, one hills, one just 45 min run/walk, and then the other days were elliptical. I am still doing the stairs after my workout, and while they are not easy, I do feel them getting easier..I don't run some every day, but I can run from 3rd floor where I start to 8th floor, then I have to walk. This is really working on my butt muscles... I can feel it!
Tools:
I'm still listening to dishing up nutrition and peoples pharmacy podcast and this is really good while I am on the elliptical. I listen to music or the extra mile podcast by Jeff Galloway when I run. I tried Jillian michaels podcast but I wasn't impressed, so I've stopped hers. I am also still logging my foods on myfitnesspal every day. It is an easy way to keep myself honest and for me to keep track of my food intake and make good choices.
This is the time of year for "Chinese new year" here in China, so I will have to go out to dinner a lot and make a lot of tastes and drink more peach neater or watermelon juice (since I don't drink alcohol) than I will drink of either of these 2 options all year...but it's the right thing to do and would be considered culturally unacceptable not to...so I'll do it and try to run it off!
The good news is that I will only have 1week to do that, then I will be away from work for 3 weeks! Woot woot!

Well, I've rambled on long enough.

Good choices to all!

Sarah

Hey Sarah, well done on the running. You are proof that consistency works! I see you are coming to NZ, do you come down the east coast to Akaroa, it is a lovely place to visit, I'm sure you will be going to fiordland too, which is so beautiful. I wish you calm seas and sunny skies.

Thanks Anna.banana!
I don't know exactly where we are cruising..I am just looking forward to 3 weeks of no obligations and warm temps and a few spa treatments and exercise to cout some of these buffet meals! I am almost all packed now (I've got a lot of New Years dinners this coming week, so I went ahead and got the packing done so I know when I come home on Friday evening, it is going to be all done!)
Today, I wasn't too sore after the run, so I hit the elliptical and did 65 min at an easy rate, then I did 30 min of yoga and then 3-12 floors of steps..then I went to the tailor and picked up my newly taken up shorts and they fit like a glove, so they should be fine on the cruise!

Consistency is the key...the many of our life challenges! Lets all make great choices this week!!

Sarah

Hi Sarah, WOWSERS!! You're an exercise machine! I hope you have a wonderful, relaxing cruise as I'm sure you deserve it. Send a cooee to me when you hit Australian shores. I'll be listening out :waving: Looking forward to the new photos xoxo Cate

Hey Sarah -
Glad your run-walk method is working to reduce pain/soreness, and running on stairs- super strong ! ... and you are already thinking about what is next after the GreatWall... wow...how far U have come....-the lady who started out just wanting to lose some weight- & here you are running marathons... amazing ...

I hope your work busy settles soon , I know how that can be... but glad to hear your cruise is coming up - U sure will be ready for the break ... NewZealand and Australia... beautiful... I did a trip to NewZealand years ago - gorgeous landscape... friendly -nice folks , .. and if U get the chance - they have dancers that do a war dance...men stomp, pound their chests, stick their tongues out- fierce ! well worth seeing...

... so happy to hear about your "healthy strawberries"... it is so rewarding when you realize the healthy choices have become habits, second nature now.... it is sad that popular society/advertising have us thinking we "need & want" all the processed stuff - while nature's natural foods/tastes are just as good - I am glad for you ....

I'll have to check out "peoples pharmacy" podcasts...( I am curious who puts them out... as a pharmacist myself...I like to learn about what information the public finds helpful... )

Thankyou , as always, for your support & wisdom, and so proud of your successes Sarah ,
Happy Chinese NewYears' & wishing you a lovely cruise-holiday,
cheers, Maryann

The time is here! We leave tomorrow on our vacation and I'm so happy...my inbox was not empty when I left work, but they had all been read and replied to if really needed! Whew... Not to finish packing and get some sleep tonight!
I'm going to get some EC
Exercise tomorrow morning to start off the day right...before that long airplane ride south!
Then I've already packing exercise shoes and shorts for running on the boat or fitness center, so I hope to counter act a few indulgences at the buffets!
