SakanaUshi's Diary

I decided that I'm stupid to just guess this early on, so I mustered the courage to enter the info into BigOven, which gave me the nutrition facts to create custom food on FitDay.

Turns out that my big dinner wasn't all that bad after all. :)

I still had a few hundred calories left. So I poured a bowl of cereal to finish off the night full.

FitDay says that I've restricted my calories enough to have lost at least a pound. So, that's pretty cool. We'll see how it adds up on Sunday.

You may have noticed a slight shift on my ticker. I couldn't resist. I was so sure that I had lost some weight by now, and I just had to know.

313.5. I'll take it.

But I promise to be good now. :) Only Sundays.

Had a banana; now I'm off to the gym.

It's a win!

Anytime the numbers go down, it's a win.

Oh, and you might find measuring easier if you pick up a 60" cloth tape at any place that carries sewing stuff. A couple of bucks will make measuring your torso a lot easier, and more accurate.

Have fun at the gym, and keep up the good work.

Had an English muffin with PB and J. Good to mix things up. Before that, I did 30+5 on the treadmill at 3mph (started at 3.5, but it was too hard to keep up). Watched the Fresh Prince of Bel Air while I did it. Then a bad Martin Lawrence movie started. Luckily, I finished before he got too annoying.

We're going to the Children's Museum today, cuz we got a free pass for our daughter. There's a Clifford exhibit there. The museum has some great reviews online, so I'm looking forward to it. Yeah, I'm one of those people who would ask to babysit someone's kid just to be able to go to the science museum and play. :D

Speaking of which, these smilies crack me up.

:puke: :eek2: Lol, eating puke.

Thanks for dropping by my journal, I appreciate all the support.
You seem to be doing amazing, keep it up, and keep giving me my daily dose of boostjuice hehe :)

Go on ya big cheater! Although I do admit, I hopped onto the scales myself today and took a quick peek, but jumped off before the needle settled. It is really tempting but I don't want to get caught up on numbers. I'm sure I'll give in before Tuesday tho!

Grats on the first step on the way down

OMG it was soooo much fun!

I've been to a few cool children's museums, but this was probably the coolest. I think it has some good funding, and the admission is expensive enough to keep tons of great exhibits going. There were bubbles, there were physics experiments, and it was a blast.

My daughter hated it. Too crowded and loud. Also, she's 15 months old.

But she'll love it in a few months. We'll go back then. ;)

When we got there, I needed a snack, so I got a Lunchables out of the vending machine. My wife ate some, so it wasn't bad. Then we went to Sonic after the museum (it was happy hour and Marketplace was on NPR). I was good and I got a grilled chicken sandwich, which comes on a whole wheat bun now, and a gigantic unsweetened iced tea. The sandwich was awesome. I've gotta look up the nutrition facts, though.

Now I'm eating a yogurt. I love yogurt. And this is pretty tasty for being low-cal yogurt.

I'll probably clean a bit today. Dinner is going to be:

Seasoned Tofu Steaks and Vegetable Stir-Fry with Ginger Sauce

It's really good. The tofu steaks also make a nice sandwich.

Tofu steaks were awesome. I used this extra-firm tofu they sell at Trader Joe's and it makes the steaks hold together much better. They're breaded and pan-fried, but it's freakin' tofu. The entire meal comes in at 328 calories. I had two servings, cuz my daughter is allergic to tofu. I made a double batch of the steaks, so we'll have those for lunch tomorrow.

I'm at 2149 calories right now (9:36pm). I think I'll have a glass of water and a multivitamin. I could still have something like 300 calories worth of stuff, but better to wait and see if I stay up late tonight. Plus, there's no dessert stuff in the house.

In other news, my daughter is freakin' cute.

Ha she's a cutie alright. Tofu, interesting, the couple times I tried to cook it myself I couldnt eat it as it was too...i dunno, slimy or something. I did have it once or twice in a restaurant over the years and thought it was pretty nice, must try it out again.

Ah, tofu...

Tofu is a little tricky. You can't just grab the first package that says "Tofu" and then slap it in a pan and expect it to turn out well. The seasoned tofu steaks I made last night used extra-firm tofu from TJ's which is the firmest tofu I've ever had. This really helps it to keep its shape without falling apart in the pan. If the tofu you had was slimy, it was probably "silken" tofu, though it could have been a firm type that just isn't particularly firm. Also, I should note that it took me quite a few attempts to eat and enjoy tofu. In college, my then-girlfriend would have me try to cook it, and I never really liked it.

Then we got married and moved to Japan, where tofu is quite ubiquitous. I was forced to eat it, so I learned to like it. Also, the tofu there was a bit better (fresher) than the stuff you usually find here.

Over the years, I've learned a few good recipes for it, and I really like it now.

My advice if you want to try it is to get the firmest tofu you can find. If the flavor bothers you, you can also sometimes find pre-marinated tofu, which might help.

Okay, I'm off to the gym after my banana. Late start today... must not be going to bed early enough.

Did 40 minutes on the elliptical and then 40 more on the treadmill. Busted my butt, and the machines said that I burned about 785 calories. W00t!

Tuna melts for lunch. Two English muffin halves, two tomato slices, a 1/4 cup of tuna salad (with light mayo), and a big pinch of shredded cheese. Total calories: 348. I had three halves, so a bit over 500. Then I had some baby carrots. Washed it all down with some Crystal Light. Not bad at all.

I'm beginning to think that rating my activity level as "Seated" was a mistake. I am probably "Sedentary" but then I log my workout. That would reduce my calories burned per day, which would reduce my recommended intake as well. Since I've been coming in low, that might be something I should do. I'd hate to be overestimating my caloric needs and then not lose any weight.

Okay, I'm now sedentary, but I'll log all significant activity on FitDay. That puts my maintenance at 2969. I changed my goal on FitDay to be more short-term: 300lbs by May 24th. That puts my restriction at exactly 1000 calories a day, so my goal is 1969. I'll just go for "under 2000", cuz I like my numbers round. Of course, this changes everything. I've still been eating under my maintenance levels, but not as far under as I should. If I want to keep eating like I've been eating, I'll have to start working out like I worked out today. :)

2969 + 785 (workout) = 3754 calories I'll burn today. So, my absolute maximum is 2754 cal. I'll shoot for 2250.

I'm considering lowering my activity level to seated all day. This would drop my target intake to 2250, which seems reasonable.

I originally figured, well, I don't actually sit all day long, but for calculation purposes maybe I effectively do sit all day long.

And my average intake seems be be around 2200 or so anyway, so maybe that's the right target.

Yeah, I figure I'm better off underestimating my activity level than overestimating it.

Dinner was:
Raspberry Balsamic Chicken - 213
Brown Rice (1 cup) - 215
Southern Succotash (2 servings) - 214
Total: 642 calories

I have also had two Nature Valley Roasted Nut Crunch bars and a Fiber One Oats and Apple Streusel bar, totaling 510 calories.

All told, I'm at 2050 for the day. I'd be completely done (and a little bit over) if I hadn't exercised today. But since I burned 785 calories at the gym, I still have a little wiggle room if I need it. Another great day done!

EDIT: Oh, just wanted to mention that the chicken was totally awesome! Healthy and quick, too. PM me for the recipe.

Another day has begun. I'm all set to go to the gym (ate my banana... damn, is that ever a great way to start the day!) and I'm determined to do what I did yesterday. I might have to keep it a little short.

Today is a landmine-filled day. We're having a little egg-dyeing party in about 7 hours. Before then, I need to plan the food, buy the food, and clean the house.

We were thinking something finger-food for dinner. I thought hummus and pitas was a good start. Then, I thought pita sandwiches. I'll slow-cook some chicken with seasonings, get some lettuce and tomato, make hummus, and maybe a veggie platter. Then I have some leftover tofu steaks in the fridge (I'll see if they're still good) that could be used for the people not eating meat (it's Good Friday, after all). Hmmmm... Well, I'll think about it while I work out.

Back soon!

Ate leftovers for lunch, and all was good.

We decided on sushi for dinner, so I went shopping and bought the fillings and such. Then I boiled two dozen eggs and prepped the fillings.

Then I made sushi for people for an hour or so, eating the ends of each roll as a tax. ;) I only made 8 or 9 rolls, so I ate maybe 20 pieces of sushi, or maybe 2.5 rolls. It was a lot of white-rice empty calories, but there was some good nutrition mixed in, and it was very good. I'll try to calculate the calories more exactly, but I think I'm okay for the day, since I worked out a bunch (the machines said I burned almost 800 calories again).

Ooh, except I just remembered a few line items... jelly beans (quite a few) and a beer. Hmmm... That might be over a bit, but still well under the amount I'd need to eat to maintain my weight.

I'm not gonna beat myself up over it. I don't eat sushi every day, and I really miss being able to get awesome sushi easily and cheaply. :(

At any rate, I'm done for the night. I should drink some water and then hit the hay.

I love sushi.

I'm originally from Vancouver, which has the highest per capita number of sushi restaurants and rate of sushi consumption in the world.

Ever tried making it with short-grain brown rice? It doesn't come out as sticky as white, and therefore doesn't hold together as well, but you take the bad with the good.

My Japanese friends would kill me if I ever considered using brown rice. :p

I usually eat brown rice with other stuff, but sushi's gotta be short-grain white rice, IMHO. *shrug*

Las Vegas has a lot of crappy sushi restaurants and a few good-but-terribly-expensive ones. I have gone out for sushi once since getting back to the US, and I decided that I can make it better for cheaper. Man, do I miss Akindo (a revolving sushi chain in Japan).

So, I am a really bad boy... I can't stop weighing myself. I might need to think of a way to get that scale out of the house.

The good news is that I weighed in at 309.5 this morning. That's 6.5 lb less than my starting weight, and 7.5lb less than my peak weight (happened on day 2). So, less than a week in, I've lost some serious weight. I'd be worried, but I know that people often loss a lot of weight the first week, some of which is water. Oh, and I want to go buy a better tape measure, but I measured my waist, and I've lost a couple inches already! :D

And that's the only reason I'm going to go to the gym this morning, cuz I'm exhausted. I dreamed about elaborate balancing acts and falling from great heights for a significant part of the night, so I was all tense and woke up with a neck-ache. Argh.

Okay, time for a banana.
