Road to Recovery

It has been a mixed day but as far as exercise and such goes it has been good.

Exercise:
Pyramid run
depth jumps
Bounding
single arm pushups
clap pushups
Dive bombers

Food, within limits and supper is in the oven (Lamb Shanks)

yet another ordinary maintenance day.

I see that a fair number of members are doing p90X, which I find is only a challenge for those unfit and not used to exercise but I have just got hold of a copy of P90X Plus which is supposed to be the next level up in difficulty so I will see how the difficulty stacks up when done on the highest intensity schedule (P90X + Doubles) next week when I get back from camping.

feeling good this morning and pain free in my injured shoulder which is makes it so tempting to put in a proper training session but I know my physio would have a fit if he thought I was considering going back into competition even if only at the masters and not open.

I must be grateful that I still have use of the shoulder for normal activities and low level shoulder exercises it is just frustrating not to be able to push my physical strength to the limit for upper body any more.

looked through the first X+ vid this morning, it has nothing difficult in it and nothing I haven't done before.

So you dont' think the p90x is "all that"?? i've heard from others that you have to be in shape to even attempt it. Its neat to find another opinion.

No I don't think it is the be all of fitness videos, I could have a slightly warped sense of what fit is compared to some others on this forum but it is nothing my ladies football team couldn't do and they generally rated as below average fitness levels on their fitness tests I put them through at the start of the season. (They get tested again next month to see how their fitness level is improving and what changes I need to make to their training)

I reserve judgement on the harder Plus version of the program until I have done all the vids.

Very interesting to hear your assesssment of it trus. It just goes to show unfit most people are when they start something like this. And its astonishing reading how unfit young people are. But you know, i remember back in 2000 when i took up triathlon (when i was about 36 or so i guess), i started from a very low base of fitness. I remember how being really unfit feels. But i've noticed it never takes very long to get fit if you do it every day and push yourself a bit.

I was in pretty bad shape before doing p90x lol but I am trying to conquer each workout but I think the strength training ones will stay because I don't think I would make up my own. I do have to say dive bombers though hurt my hips like crazy so I can only do 5 before I have to stop.

Your diary is really amazing! I'm sorry that you can't do lifting anymore :( When you have a passion for something its really unfair when you have to give it up. I'm glad you got a new car! Did you make your own sand bag or did you buy one? I have been thinking that I should get one since I started doing the bodyrock.tv exercises. I am interested in your assessment of the p90x+. I haven't done Kenpo or the abs one since we don't have a pull up bar. I am currently wanting to conquer the interval X. I do have to admit that I have to usually peel myself off the floor after that one.

Also P90x is coming out with another program called p90x: MC2 which I also plan to buy in September. I think I should have conquered all the videos by then.

Can I ask what the fitness test is that you put your girls through?

I am posting a bit earlier than planned due to a poor camping experience but I will get to that in a moment.

Apart from my heavy punch bag I have made several pieces of custom equipment like the weighted sled I use for hill sprints, It is an old large off road tyre with rope threaded through drilled holes and padded shoulder pieces attached for the "drag handles" and boards placed inside so weight can be added. The same tyre is also used for tyre flips.

as far as testing goes the main one is the beep test but also the step test, The Y test and the weighted dorsiflexion test among others.

on to the failed camping trip

yesterday I double checked with the rangers office about track conditions and got the all clear but today we arived in the pre dawn to get started before the heat of the day became a problem, at the 5km mark I had to move stuff from my sons pack to my own boosting up the weight of my pack to 20 kg (44 lb) the track was steep sand and loose rocks with a lot of trees that were down over the track but we made it to the 14 km mark and discovered that the track was flooded and the surrounding bush an impenetrable wall of scrub forcing us to turn back a bit over 1 km from our booked campsite by the time we got to a point where we could detour around the flooding it was not worth continuing because of the distances involved in the detour. So Today I have hiked around 25 km with a 20 kg pack which felt like a tonne at the end without any gain other than sore shoulders from the pack.

Calorie consumption was a bit out yesterday with eating low weight hiking food but not really a problem, a good maintenance diet can handle the ups and downs. Water yesterday was good but carrying 2 day water for 2 people makes for a heavy pack.

Today

Breakfast: Tuna and 4 Dates
Snack: large apple
Lunch: steamed veg
Snack: plain rice cakes
Dinner: Liver, onions, mushrooms

Exercise will be playing mini golf and using the rock climbing wall at a local fun park with my middle son. each of my boys have a completely different idea of what is fun during the holidays.

Carrying your water would be a drag. I would really hate that. I have to do it on the bike but that's not quite so bad as on your back.

Did you tell those stupid rangers off? How hopeless were they to tell you such wrong information.

No, I was to tired to go back into the ranger station to tell them off, which is unusual for me as I can have a foul temper lol.

some photos of hike

tomorrow is always the hardest day of the week when it comes to good health, role players and gamers are a notoriously unfit, unhealthy bunch.

I will start on the X+ vids on Monday for testing using the X+ Doubles calendar so that is the Upper Plus and Abs/Core Plus and depending on difficulty I should also be able to hit the gym

each day has 2 vids except sat and sun which have only one plus vid.

The hike looks so nice! What are you doing with the role players? I love your quote about them lol My fiance is a role player. Its been hard to convince him to workout and he does get exceptionally lazy... Its hard to get him to like fitness just to be fit. He isn't big or anything because his metabolism is decent and he doesn't overeat but he complains a lot about working out an hour day when he has 23 other hours of the day to play video games or other stuff.

Have fun with X+! I wish we had somewhere to put a pull up bar. I'm hoping to get a bigger place so I can make the garage somewhere decent to workout at. The rock climbing wall with your middle son sounds really fun! I love how active you are with them :)

Have a nice weekend :)

Tally, We have a group of friends who play a D&D campaign (1st/2nd edition hybrid) each Sunday except when I have work, I am the main DM . It is a bit scary to think I have been a gamer and role player for 30 years lol, starting from the time that D&D was the devils game and you had to build your own PC to play, games were something you played after typing in pages of code and if you were lucky to have a tape data storage device save it to tape for next time :D

TSR 80 anybody :) still have the manual stored at mums somewhere lol

not bad for food today, a little low on calories and fat cals were a touch high but planning a mostly veg meal for tonight so its all good.

We will remember them. I'm thinking about remembering them by making a batch of Anzac biscuits and taking them to a friend who isn't on a diet. I don't think I can "afford" them myself!

yesterday done the first 2 vids from the X+ nothing extra hard in there but ok, today is Interval X Plus and Abs/Core Plus but I want to see If I can hit the gym first if they are open.

spent time yesterday digging weeds out of an overgrown garden.

My fiance played D&D too and invited me but I never went. He said it was lots of fun. Have you been with the same group that long?

How did you like the first 2 vids?

the first 2 vids were ok, I had to do the exercises with the chin bar separately because I don't have a bar near the TV.

I have been with this D&D group for 3 years or so now, but have been part of other long lasting groups before moving state.
