Rachie's Diary

More food....

afternoon snacks, 1 carton of non-fat skim milk
1 apple
1 hershey kiss (luckily there was only one left! :) )
3 pringles (the last of the tube - boyfriend ate the rest - I really didn't eat the whole can!!!)

Dinner: not eaten yet but am having baked chicken breast with broccoli, and a side salad with lots of veggies and low-fat dressing, 2 pieces of wheat bread and butter.

Wow - I just did my calories and all that is still just under 1500 calories. Eating healthy rocks! I already added the bread to up my calories and I might even add some cottage cheese

Thursday

Yay! Just found out my class for today got cancelled because of the weather... although I have yet to see a snowflake hit the ground
Who am I to question the bigwigs though, I am happy to sit here drinking coffee and thinking about all the work I should be doing

Gym was VERY hard this morning. I drove myself as hard as I could and was very, very RED but I ran 3 miles in 29 and a half minutes! I have to keep pushing myself otherwise I sit back and cruise or just lie back and don't even get out of bed! Not today though! :)

Oh and I might have "accidentally" weighed again today - I think I should just accept the fact that I weigh multiple times a day and that's not going to change. Anyway - I was 135.5lbs again!

Hey Rachie,
Don't worry about daily weighings - there are studies that support the concept of daily weighing over weekly weighing - so what's most important is to find what works for you! If you don't mind the daily fluctuations, then don't sweat it.

Enjoy your day "off" (off being relative since you've already been to the gym!)

Thanks M2M - I think you are right. It would be nice to get a surprise woohoo at the end of the week if I lose weight but I am a bit anal retentive about numbers and things and like to know what's going on! I think I am too reliant on the scales because it really isn't all about that. However, it does give me a bit of an inkling as to whether I am doing the right things day to day. It's cool. I think I made it into a bigger issue than it is.

Also - yay to day off class but still have to work in a lab - I am a grad student. But this is the cool part. Classes are the pain in the butt! :D

Well, I think it was Prevention Magazine that did a full article on the benefits of daily weighing - I just found the article, and post it here.

Just remember, do what works for YOU :D

Here's the article:
New Scale Strategy
People who are trying to either lose weight or avoid gaining do better by weighing themselves daily, according to a new study in the December 2005 issue of Annals of Behavioral Medicine.

The research team evaluated self-weighing practices of more than 3,000 people participating in either a weight loss program or a weight gain prevention program. The study's key finding: Higher weighing frequency was associated with greater 24-month weight loss or less weight gain.

Says lead researcher Jennifer Linde, an associate professor at the University of Minnesota: "If people see that their number has gone up, they may realize it's time to do something. It's probably easier to make that small correction than to try to compensate after gaining a lot of weight."

The first study group consisted of 1,800 obese or overweight adults enrolled in a weight loss program. Participants all had a body mass index (BMI) of at least 27. They were randomly divided into three groups: a telephone-based weight loss intervention, a mail-based weight loss intervention, or a usual-care control condition. The researchers weighed them every 6 months for 2 years.

The other group consisted of 1,226 overweight adults--BMI above 25--enrolled in a weight gain prevention program. They were randomly divided into three groups: an educational weight control intervention, the same educational intervention plus a reward for returning self-monitoring postcards, or a minimal-contact control condition. The researchers weighed the participants at the study's outset and every year for 3 years.

For the weight gain prevention group, the researchers found that "the control group decreased weighing over time, and both intervention groups increased weighing over time." Even though weight maintenance was the goal for this group, daily weighing led to weight loss at the 12- and 24-month time points.

Well-known behavioral programs such as Weight Watchers have not widely recommended that followers weigh themselves daily; instead, many programs recommend weekly self-weighing. Public health recommendations from the Centers for Disease Control do not include self-weighing at all.

The researchers say their results suggest that "clinical as well as public health recommendations for regular weighing should be considered."

"It is not surprising that daily weighing correlates with success--people who do well like the feedback," says Kelly D. Brownell, director of the Yale Center for Eating and Weight Disorders. "I suspect it helps people who are succeeding and is a problem for people who are not losing or losing slowly, but the only way to tell is with a randomized trial that assigns people to different weighing schedules."

I, too, am addicted to my daily weighings. My "official" day is Friday, but I find myself hopping on the scale in the morning. It's motivating.

And I tend to throw some pineapple in my cottage cheese (yum), and every once in a while, a little honey. I had never tried it before, either, and now I'm addicted.

It sounds like you're doing well, though, and it's inspiring to me, because you started where I did (your original weight at 149), have a similar goal, and have gotten down about 14 pounds (as opposed to my 3 so far).

But I really would love a beer.;)

Thanks for the article M2M - that's pretty interesting stuff. I think I'll stick to weighing in officially once a week (Monday) and continue to weigh myself daily as a measure of my progress. I have seen other people do a 5-day average and have been keeping track of mine - this is probably a good tool as well as it allows for those fluctuations. :)

honeybunch82 - thanks for stopping by! Thanks for the cottage cheese ideas too - they sound yummy! Good luck in your weight loss - I started this about 2 years ago and lost 16lbs in about 10-11 months and I really just exercised to do that - I didn't change many of my eating habits at all and they weren't good! I gained back a bit and now am starting over - although I was still 11lbs down from my highest weight. I am eating better, counting calories and making sure my body gets the nutrients it needs. I am also exercising probably 5-6 times a week. The scales hasn't gone dramatically but it is consistently going down, also I am noticing I look healthier, am toning up and my skin and hair are actually looking more fresh and shiny! It does take time, I still have a long way to go but at the moment I feel pretty positive. Congratulations on your 3lbs - that's a very good start - keep working hard and those pounds will melt away :D I'm going to go check out whether you have a diary now :)

Mmmm....Chicken balls....did you have that bright red sauce them? Yummy. And chicken wings too? You're making me hungry

chicken balls? ummmm.... I had jerk chicken on a bread roll i.e. a sandwich..... did you read that really quickly? :D chicken balls, hahahahaa - sorry, I am terrible....however, I think you are talking about chinese food? I hope... and that sounds good too ;)

Now chicken wings - they are my favorite. I am a really slow eater normally but chicken wings? I could probably break a world record with the speed I eat those!

God I am making myself hungry. A nutrigrain bar is good but not as good as wings with beer! yummmmmmmmm!

mmm beer! M2M - you'd be proud - I had a pint of guinness last night. It was a pretty good pint of the black stuff too :D

Ate some more chicken wings last night  then half a slice of pizza and a bit of salad. I had more on my plate but was full after the chix wings luckily otherwise I would have eaten it all.

Ate the second half slice for breakfast, well brunch, breakfast was Special K with red berries or whatever that stuff is. I keep seeing people logging it for breakfast and was curious, it was on offer at the grocery store too :) Quite nice.... other than that I have had copious amounts of coffee and a nutrigrain bar today... I am at work too :( but am leaving in an hour or two to hit the gym :D suppose I had better start working on hydrating my body after all that coffee!
