I am a 44 years old mom to four kids and this is far from being my first diet. Like many people on this site, I've been concerned about my weight since I was a child and have been on just about every diet invented by human-kind (and a few possibly invented by aliens).
I was always tall for my age and never stick-thin, but certainly never fat or even chubby as a child. But my bad relationship with my weight seemed like destiny: First of all, all through my life I watched my mother struggle terribly with her weight and low self-esteem. (She is now at a very low weight and has been for several years, but maintains it through binge+purging.)
Another event marked me..it may seem silly, but when I was about 10 years old, another little girl in my class told me that I had "fat arms". It was then that I took a look at myself and noticed that I wasn't as thin and dainty as some of the other girls.
This was the beginning of the end.
By age 12 I was on a diet and excerise program. (I did the Jane Fonda Workout with a book and a record album! Too funny!)
Another terrible event was getting weighed in gym class in junior high. It was considered shameful for any girl to weigh over 100 lbs. That was FAT. Now, by age 13 I was 5feet 5 inches - much taller than most of the girls, but that didn't matter. I was a Big Fatty McFatterson. And I hated all 110 lbs of myself.
Despite my sporadic efforts at dieting, I gained more weight (and got taller!) By the time I was in high school, I was just over 5 feet 6 inches tall and my weight stabilized at 144lbs. I was pretty popular and went on plenty of dates..but I felt like a giant cow. I was Not Good Enough.

When I went away to University, I put on the Freshman Five, plus 25! The changes and stress had really gotten to me. But I did manage to take that weight off by strenuous diet and excercise and got down to 138.
And then I gained it back. Then I lost it. Then I gained again....and on and on.
You get the picture?
Now here I am, STILL not at peace with myself and once again obese...

Why am I trying this yet again despite my bad track record?
Well, there are a couple of reasons.
First of all, I want my husband to think I look beautiful again. He doesn't want to do anything with me or take me anywhere. I think he's ashamed of me.. He doesn't say much, but things are not that great between us.
That's the big reason. I've had enough and have to try to change my marriage.

There's also another, less important trigger: in 2003 I went to my high school reunion. I was just coming off a strict diet where I'd lost lots of weight, so I was still at a pretty good weight. I was at about 170, which looks ok on me- I wore about a size 12 and was pretty fit.
And now they are having another mini-reunion this summer and I'll be back in my hometown visiting then. I really wanted to go and didn't want to stay away because I'm ashamed that I'd gained 50lbs in the seven years since then!
Last month, I decided that I would go to the reunion! Then I weighed myself: 221 lbs. This was my highest weight ever- It was on April 24, 2010.
On that day, I went on a strict low-cal, high protein diet. The excercise thing was not yet on the radar. I needed to get my eating under control first.

So far, my plan is working. I have lost 14.5 lbs in three weeks. (yay!) I know this is pretty fast, but I know that the rate will be slowing down soon. But as it slows, I plan to make excercise more and more a part of the plan.

My target date is July 17, 2010. I plan to lose a total of 45 lbs. I have already lost over 14 lbs, so that makes about 30 lbs more to lose in the nine weeks remaining. I believe it can be done and I am determined.

And after my target date, I plan to set up a new goal and keep losing!

I plan to keep up my diary here. I am also participating in the Month of May Challenge on this site.
Plus I am keeping track of my food at Livestrong.com.
On top of all this, I have a friend that lives nearby who is at exactly the same weight as I am and who is on a diet as well. So, we can give each other some real-life support and excercise together!

All this in mind, I feel that my chances are good for real success!

Today's food so far:
Breakfast-
protein powder and skim milk - 200 calories
Lunch-
sautéed zucchini- 70 calories
mango soy dessert- 76 calories

I usually try to eat better than this, but we just had to have our beloved cat euthanized on Friday and I feel too horrible to eat very much.

I look forward to reading the other diaries here and being part of the group. Good luck to everyone reading this. I hope we will all achieve our goals!

Awh, I'm sorry to hear about your cat. I was heartbroken when I had mine put down :(

Welcome to the site! My goal was to lose between 40-50 pounds and I'm well on my way so I know you can do it too! I put on the freshers 5 (plus another 20!) as well so I feel you on that one!
Hope to see you update again soon and GOOD LUCK!!

Thank you, Sunflower! I have read several of your other posts around the site and I think you are a real inspiration!
Your encouragement means a lot to me.
Other than my dieting friend that lives in another town, I don't have any support in this. My husband is very skeptical. He's seen me lose weight before and then regain it all. So, he doesn't see why I'm even bothering. He doesn't love how I look when I'm fat, but he really does love me and hates to see me work so hard and then have it all be for nothing.

But I do feel that this time I can do it! I am super-motivated and hoping that friends on this site can help me keep my goals in sight!

You can do it for sure! Just don't look at the little picture. Celebrate the little losses and don't see this as a diet, see it as a change in lifestyle. That's where I think I'd go wrong once I've lost all my weight--because if you focus on it being a diet and restricting yourself to the point where you dont enjoy your food and stuff then of course you'll put it all back on once you've reached your goal. Just take out as much of the crap and get exercising, because it's the exercise that will make the most difference in maintaining your weight!

Just make it fun, don't let the food get boring and make good choices! Have you got a Weight Watchers group in your area? I've made very good friends at my meetings and its awesome for support and you can even keep going once a month or so once you've reached your goal to keep you on track :D

Thanks for the tips, Sunflower.

I just looked up Weight Watchers for my area and there are some groups within a half-hour or so of my house. Nothing closer. I don't know if my husband will be happy for me to spend time and money on it, as he is so sure I'll fail....

But I am definitely in this for the long run. I don't want to waste the rest of my life feeling badly about the way that I look.

Dinner today was two pieces of low-fat cheese and four whole wheat crackers. It was all I felt like eating...

So, my calories are barely at 700 for the whole day.
But I hope to manage to eat more as time passes. I miss my poor cat so much...

On the excercise front, I did over an hour of moderately heavy gardening today. my son and I were planting potatos, corn and all kind of good stuff. Hoeing and digging must burn lots of calories, right?

According to the website I use to track calories burnt from exercising, for a 200 pound person, doing gardening for one hour would burn just under 500 calories! Would have to be pretty intense gardening, and for the whole hour but even if it was just 30 mins of really intense gardening, then it's still a load of calories!

Hi Rox.

Just wanted to jump in and caution you on the low cal intake. I know you don't feel like eating but you need way more than 700 cals in a day. Especially looking after a hubby and 4 kids and doing gardening etc!

I know you have some real motivation to get the weight off.....but 700 isnt even half of what you should be eating to lose weight.

I hope others chime in cause I know I'm new here. I hope you succeed...I also hope you can do it healthy.

(And congrats on the weight loss!!!) You know I had to throw that in there!! :)

My gardening was pretty lively, but I wasn't running with sweat or anything, so I'd say it was light to moderate. But I was at it for over an hour. So, good for me! Thanks for the info, sunflower.

Flumes- I promise to take your advice seriously. I have read some long threads on this site talking about the hazards of eating too little. I really think my calories will go up as I start to accept the death of our lovely and sweet pet.

But I have one question to throw out there: On one thread, someone commented that an obese person can "get away with" eating super-low calories. The argument was that someone with less to lose would see an almost immediate slowdown in metabolism that could hurt their weight loss, while the fatter person has so much to lose that it doesn't really affect them. Is there any truth to this?

BTW, thanks to you guys for commenting. It's so fun to have people to talk to about all this!

Food so far:
Breakfast- Vanilla protein shake W/skim milk 200
Lunch - 2 whole grain crackers 62
2 boiled eggs 148
200gr steamed spinach 60

That gets me to 470 calories and it's 1:30pm

I'll try to have a snack later...not sure if i'll have time, though. I have to pick up mY daughter at school at 3pm, my son at 4pm and my twin babies (age 12! LOL!) at 5PM and then get one of the girls to ballet class. The older kids and younger kids are at different schools far away from each other, so I am going to be on the road today!

I have a question, though. I'm tracking my calories on MyPlate and I seem not to be getting enough fiber, according to the site. I always eat whole grain when having crackers or bread, but I don't eat very much because I am trying to stay high in protein and low in carbs. What can I eat that has lots of fiber and not many carbs/calories/sugar?

congrats on the weight loss so far. I would like to jump on board with Flumes... 700 cal is way too little, and is not a healthy amount to be eating.

Hopefully your intake will increase when you start to get past your loss.

As for fibre, one of my favorite snacks is yogurt with bran buds (all bran cereal that is formed into these little "nubs") this is such a delicious snack. I brought it to work a few times with lunch, and I started a revolution with the ladies, pretty soon they were all packing bran buds.

I always like to joke, (because Regis Philbin used to do the ads for Bran Buds) that if it was good enough for Reg, it was good enough for me.

Thanks for the advice! I'll definitely get me some Buds and join the club. LOL!

I usually eat a soy dessert each day, so I could just throw a bit of the cereal in there. I bet it will be good:)

Thanks, again!

I did actually manage a snack today- a 98 calorie chocolate protein drink. It comes in a little 200ml brick with a straw and is easy to take along on the go.

So, I'm at about 570 calories and it's nearly dinner time. I'm thinking turkey breast and vegetables. Then maybe a mango/peach soy dessert...

My food planning is mostly very unorganised, as nothing sounds good to me these days. And this is unusual for me- in the past when I have been having emotional stress, I would eat. This is only the second time in my life where I've actually lost my appetite. I figure it will pass in time and then it will be easier to eat a few more calories each day.

Hey Rox! I have struggled just as you have with my weight over the years from 140 to 240 pounds! This time I am certain and highly motivated to lose it and keep it off! From scanning through your posts it seems you are doing very well! Keep it up, I'm rooting for you! I'll post new pictures in my diary at the end of the week when I do my weigh in, which i'm highly anticipated for! Good luck sweetie!

Thanks so much! I've read through your diary, too, and am finding it really inspiring. I really plan to step up my exercise- maybe not running, but something to get me moving in an athletic way...

I look forward to seeing your pics!

Dinner:
Half a baked chicken breast, some mushrooms and steamed spinach plus a mango/peach soy dessert.

The total is now 807 calories, but it's already 8pm and I really don't feel like eating another thing...

This is SO strange for me. I am usually so hungry all the time, but for the last four weeks, I've been feeling completely uninterested by food. I even served my family a gorgeous black forest cake for dessert tonight and it didn't tempt me the least bit. Very odd.

Yesterday i stayed well within my calories, despite the fact that I was gone all day on a school trip with the class my twin daughters are on. So, yay for that!
And it was kind of hard, as there was a big lunch given by the local language club. But I just had three bites of penne pasta in fresh tomato sauce. And I had the dessert- it was a panna gelato bar and had only 129 calories. It was VERY good!
The trip was to northern Italy (just a three hour drive from where we live in France) and the food there tendsto be very good. So, I was amazed that I actually managed to hardly eat anything. I had been SO worried about overeating.
But I did the opposite -My calories for the day ended up at only 650.
We were too busy for me to run to a shop and buy something healthy as a snack. And we didn't get home until 9pm. I really didn't feel hungry, but I ate some turkey breast anyway, with some steamed spinach.
So, I had low calories and walked around in the Italian Alps a lot yesterday. That in mind, I'm not surprised to find that I've lost another pound today.
I'm now at 205.7 lbs! The 190s are not out of my reach!

Today I've had:
Vanilla protein shake 200
baked fish 150
Sunchoke, zucchini and red bell pepper stir-fry with olive oil 235

That puts me at 585 today. If I plan a nice snack and dinner, I should be able to get up to 1000 calories today....

Hi Rox

How are you? I just caught up with you diary! It sounds funny to me having a day trip to Italy but I live in Canada so I don't think that it's even possible!
You seem to be eating very healthy but still kind of low on the cals.....I usually keep nuts in my desk at work and in my purse they are all pre measure in 1/2 cup portion they help bring up the calories and protein intake at the same time and easy to eat on the go! If you choose the not salted ones they are very healthy! For Fiber I love Flax seeds they can be added to anything from soups to yogourt, muffins really anything my sister puts some in cakes when she bakes one! I will see you in the month of May Challenge!!!I will be back check up on you!!! Congrats on the weight already lost!

Thanks, guys! It's fun to "meet" new people around here.

I am crazy about zucchini. I just bought a bunch at the store today. there's about six plants in my garden, but they won't be giving me any zucchini for a long while. It's so cold here!

ITA that a day trip to Italy sounds strange, even to me! It only takes about two hours to get there, though, so it is do-able.the Italian Alps. What's even funnier is that we ALSO live near the Swiss border and I can be in downtown Geneva in about 30 minutes! I have to say, I really love where I live!

I'll certainly look into flax seeds. And maybe I'll get some nuts as well- they could be a good bedtime snack. Sometimes I do feel hungry when it's bedtime, but I just don't feel like preparing anything or making a mess in the kitchen i'll have to clean up. Lazy! So, nuts could be the answer.

As for my day-
I had no time to exercise, as I had to work most of the day (I teach English in my home).
Foodwise, I had no time for a snack. I ended up eating a good dinner, though: Steamed broccoli, two whole wheat crackers, a portion of roquefort cheese, and a mango soy dessert.
That brings me to 916 calories for the whole day. It's low, but I feel really bad that I didn't exercise...
I really want to have a good weight on Friday, as I'm doing the May Challenge (Hey Verobc- Good Luck!)

I should just be happy that i'm still here on the site and still following my healthy eating plan. The fact that I'm eating really healthy foods is making an impact beyond weight-loss. I've noticed that my skin seemed really nice now...and I'm not the only one, so it's not my imagination! The other day I ran into a woman I know slightly. She works in a fancy hairsalon in a chic hotel in Geneva. We were chatting outside and she suddenly exclaimed "Your skin is just beautiful!"
And at age 44, looking good in full sunlight is nothing to sneeze at, people!
So, that's the story that made my week (possibly my month!)
