Petals diary

Thanks Jack.

I’m sitting in the car and the rain is pouring down. Husband gone to collect something in a store I refused to get out of the car it’s so wet.
We had lunch out . I really struggled to find anything on the menu I liked or that was on plan . I ended up with wholemeal bread toasted sandwich with ham onion and tomato , side salad and water . Today is sort of a day off cooking as out with friend for dinner . I am planning to eat what I am allowed from the menu . I have been eating out a bit recently after months of not .

Sounds like you have mastered the eating out well, good for you! Enjoy dinner with your friend.

You should try pozole, it is a favorite Mexican dish, but for some reason has not exported along with the other more familiar Mexican dishes. Mexicans themselves eat a lot of pozole, it has ancient origins, predating European arrival in Mexico. Since my wife is vegetarian ours is made without meat, but I sprinkled a little chicken on top. The garnishes you add on top of the pozole are my favorite parts, yesterday I put sliced fresh radishes, jalapeno peppers, and cabbage on, there are lots of other things people add.

Hi, Petal. You do really seem to have this eating out caper under control. I'll be interested to hear how dinner went & what your choices were. I find eating out in cafes the hardest as I don't eat wheat if I can help it. It rained here overnight, which we really needed. The birds sound happy :)

Thanks Rob, Cate and LaMa . The eating out is kind of new and it won’t be too frequent now . It’s expensive here anyway . What we spent last night would feed me for a week !!

Ok I had melon salad to start . Then I had hake on a bed of delicious tomatoes with squash and root veg . I passed on the potatoes . I had one glass of white wine and enjoyed it . My friend wanted a dessert and I did join her but I was so disappointed in it . It was a baklava which I love but it was pretty grim so I didn’t eat it . I had a little bit and pushed aside . Restaurants should not serve food they do not know how to make properly . Also I suspect it could have been bought in . Don’t know really .

I did eat well and went off plan a bit with wine and dessert although not eaten much of it but I like I can go out and do this . I have to be able to fit in with real life . Going to eat at home today . I really need to go shopping for salads and fruit . Hopefully will squeeze it in somehow .

Yes, for sure! I loved reading about your meal out - partly because some of the meal sounded good (what was in the melon salad? I ask because I've got most of a canteloupe/rockmelon in the fridge, and would like to eat it in different ways) and partly because of the fitting in personally-suited eating with being part of the whole wider* social world out there.
*pun not intended!

Oh Amy it was just watermelon and honeydew serves with orange slices and pomegranate. Very tasty .

I am starving at the moment . Thought I would write here rather than eat and wait for my pasta bolagnese that’s cooking away . I probably have eaten very little today as didn’t have a proper lunch.

Some days it’s so so hard

when i eat out, i try to avoid things i can make just as well or even better at home. with the variety of good Mexican restaurants around town, chile rellenos, chilaquiles & tortilla soup are a few labor intensive dishes i'd rather not spend the time to create myself. sushi & sashimi places are also restaurant trips i'll make once in a while. it's been years since i've eaten a restaurant burger.

Rob I had a carrot while waiting ! Was fine.

Had some strawberries and quark too . Done ok today . LaMa good to enjoy your calories at least I think at this point .

A lot of our restaurants are mainly steaks chicken fish etc . I tend to have fish because I hate cooking it . Would love a good Mexican but sadly there are just cheap versions here

i grew up in the NE, so i know what you mean about chain Mexican restaurants. fortunately our little town lucked out due to a Tex-Mex transplant couple who opened up a small restaurant. it quadrupled in size by the time i moved diagonally to the SW 10 years later. fish...! ...yes!! another grilling chore i'd rather leave to pros.

out or in, the price of some steak is kinda insane.

Totally agree with the price of steak . Def cheaper to eat that at home . Could be 30 Euro here for a filet steak in a nice restaurant. And the poor farmer fights to make a decent price at sale .

Absolutely! :flame: It's flatly wrong - and so is the way (in Australia, anyway) that dairy farmers get ground into the dust.

Thank you! I'll have a Petal-inspired melon salad for lunch. And well done on holding to the Write! Don't bite! line. :)

Hi Amy hope you enjoyed some melon salad . I made one once with some fresh mint chopped up and melon balls in some diet sprite . It makes a really refreshing starter or snack . Not a huge fan of diet sodas but this is nice . Keep in the fridge .

a good busy day today . Work was ok , just keeping my head down really. Did some grocery shopping all healthy stuff . Roasted a chicken for dinner . Helped my daughter with school stuff and went for a walk . Going to have a bath and go to bed . Pretty tired .

Hey Petal, good to see that you had a good day. Keep it up.

I can imagine that Ireland is not the place to find good Mexican food. Flyer lives in an area very close to Mexico and with a lot of good Mexican restaurants, some of the best. When I was much younger, a student, I used to travel a lot in Mexico, it was very inexpensive and in the pre-cartel days quite safe. I always liked Mexican food, but traveling around Mexico and eating local food made me better appreciate its diversity. Great cuisine! I think it is largely based on old mesoamerican pre-columbian foods, maybe with a bit of a Spanish influence. That region had the most developed civilizations before European arrival, the Aztec, Maya, Olmec, etc. I think what we call Mexican is basically their food.

Fixing dinner, helping your daughter with home work and going for a walk sounds like a pretty full evening.

Hi Petal, sorry I didn't get caught up on all the diaries yet, but just wanted to say hi and hope you had a good evening with your daughter, and a really nice restful walk! It seems like you need a change, and I hope your friend can help you overcome your fears so you can break out and try new things! I worry about becoming an empty nester, but also it's an opportunity to fly and be free!

Melon balls in minty Sprite sounds like a really nice refresher! Glad to see you got a walk in, too :)
