Petals diary

Great we are off on a road trip !!!
Yesterday was busy day. Caught up with the kids as everyone home for the weekend . Cooked a really nice bolagnese and I piled my plate with salad , small portion of pasta and a good serving of the sauce which was all healthy . Had a walk too . Today is driving about and hopefully seeing a friend for coffee. Weather is nice at the moment so another walk tonight too. Housework may wait .

Well done on the weight loss so far :) I'm having beef bolognese tomorrow and I may have to steal your idea on the salad!

Ha Cate the road trip was a reference to our road trip above lol . Hi there DA the salad is lovely with the bolagnese, raw spinach also great . I’m sitting in the sun waiting on my son right now . Beautiful day

After chatting with my friend today about BMIs I did some calculations. Im order for me to be a healthy BMI I would need to lose another 26 lb . This worries me because I honestly can’t even imagine it . This would make me 11st 9 lb I think . I did hit this pre my children whilst working out 3 times a week , playing squash, and following a particular hot summer away in Europe where it melted off me . I personally would be happy if I could lose another stone but I’m still considered over weight. This perhaps sounds shallow but I don’t want weight loss to age me either . Can I ask does anyone else aim for bmi or just what you are happy with it ?

I looked this up because I want to be on the high end of normal weight because I look too skinny at the mid-range and I don't feel like myself. The guidelines I found say not to have a waist size bigger than 35" if you are a woman, blood sugar level should be around 100, blood pressure around 120/80, and bad cholesterol less than 100. Then we don't run any extra risk of diabetes, cancer, and all the weight related diseases. I am aiming for around 160 pounds and seeing if I am happy with that as the fat distribution on my body is radically different than when I was last not overweight.

Hope you are having a good time with your kids this weekend!!

Marsia what height are you ? Actually that 11st 9 should read 11st 5 which interestingly is similar weight target to you

Ok that’s all good to know . Will get all those tested at next appt but my bp is ok as I wore a monitor . Cholesterols will find out at next appt but they were high last year . I’m hoping to have changed that about .

Can I ask does anyone else aim for bmi... ?

Yes, I've been using BMI (as well as other milestones) to give me an idea of what to aim for, how far to go, etc. Not the next milestone but the one after is to get to/under a BMI of 30, i.e. to shift from "obese" to merely "overweight". So this discussion now is all really interesting, especially LaMa's point about BMI being more useful for general stats than as a specific health measure. (I'll still be looking to get down to "overweight", though.)

I'm currently BMI 29 but as I was 33 at one point it's coming down at least. The chat with friend yesterday got me a bit anxious I admit.
Anyway I'm enjoying my diet plan right now and happy to be losing weight so just going to concentrate on my mini targets for now. And that means I need to lose 2.5 more lbs before sept 30 . Better get cracking

I also worry about weight loss affecting my face. I feel it’s all about living a consistently healthy lifestyle, so if you’re eating good foods for the majority of meals and exercising regularly, that is going to show and your body will reflect that.

My BMI is at 27 but with all the yoga and bits of exercise I do, my ‘shape’ is a lot better than it used to be. Still a bit to go but I don’t look too bad!

Hi Petal, I am 175.26 cm tall (5' 9"), so 160 pounds is just under the limit for healthy weight. I feel like lately I am slimming down without losing weight, so I am not that worried about losing the weight, I just have to get more exercise in consistently. I'll get out the tape measure today and see if my waist is less than 35 inches - I really hope so!

Amy, it felt amazing to me when I got out of the obese category. I can't wait until you are there, too!!!

First I am only commenting as a non-expert but I don't pay much attention to BMI, if you feel good and are healthy you are fine. In my case I don't need some calculator to tell me I'm fat, I know that already. You however are entering into the not fat range, that's different. You could just try losing that last stone and see how you are feeling. Maybe you should ask your doctor.
This perhaps sounds shallow but I don’t want weight loss to age me either.
Not shallow at all, wanting to look our best is a very human instinct. I think you should do what makes you feel good and good about yourself, just so its healthy.

It must feel good to be getting down into the range where you need to think about these things, you've done great!

I personally think BMI is a pretty unforgiving standard. I have a BMI of 26, which puts me into the overweight category. I know I'm not in the same kind of shape I was as a teenager, but I'd have to lose 6 pounds to be at 159 to edge into the very upper limits of the normal category. I know from experience that it would be really difficult for me to stick at that weight, like feeling hungry all the time or so much exercise. Like everyone has been saying, it's just a generalized rule and shouldn't be taken to as gospel or anything.

Thanks for your comments everyone . Marsia you are so tall you lucky thing and you must be really slim looking now . And jack that’s a great Bmi . Good work to the two of you .

Bought a lovely new winter coat today with my vouchers . It’s so cozy and it will be fine if I lose some more weight I think ( I hope ). I will wear it lots though to make sure I get wear from it . Finally used my vouchers .

I wish it was as simple as following a fat-loss code. Or maybe it is:

Remember 1, look for the fruit bowl
2. Don't hurry, stop and chew
3. Look at your progress so far before you eat that cheese!
Remember 4 - let all the chocolate pass you
5. Don't let desserts distract you
6. Keep walking, that's the fat-loss code!!

Reference song - Petal should know it :D:

Haha Emily love it and now it’s stuck in my head for the night
Remember one look for a safe place !!

Had to drive today I consider myself to be a good driver but I missed turns today’s and was in wrong lanes . There was horrible misty Heavy rain and I really felt anxious . Not like me at all who would drive across the world .

What colour coat & what style did you buy, Petal? I bought a lovely grey peacoat a few years ago & while I was able to do it up this Winter, it was a bit restrictive (ie tight!) Next year I want it to be loose.
I hate driving in the mist, but especially so at night. I think it puts most people to the test.

Yes, please, more details about your new coat! And I love Emily's weight safety song :D
