You did well Angel.

Thursday was the day that we travelled home and spent over 7 hours on the motorway. I didnt manage to get out for a long walk - but did my short walk in the dark when I got home.

Thanks Angel (good steps by the way) - I was determined to get my pedometer to say a number that I was happy with.

Hey everyone! I have had pedometer for a long time now. Now that I am recovering from knee surgery and finally can exercise without it hurting and acting up I have decdied to give my pedometer a workout.

I was surffing the site and found this club and decided to give it a wurl if that is alright with all of you.

I have been wearing it today since 9am it is now 2:18pm and I have walked3532 steps = 1.672 miles = 93.8 cals

Happy Walking!!

Welcome back Stacy. It's good to see you back here all motivated and raring to go.:hug2:
A great way to start the new year.

It's nice to meet you Jennbabe06.

I wear my pedometer all day long - not just for an exercise walk.
That way we can compare our results to the 10,000 steps that many experts recommend us to do each day.

Hi everyone, if it's OK I'd like to join this group. I've found an old pedometre but no instructions! I've done over 7000 steps so far today, but I'm not sure how you all convert that into distances (or even calories). Would somebody mind explaining? Thanx!

EDIT: I've just read back through some of the earlier posts and I see that you have to have a special pedometre if you want all the stats. I'll see if I can't buy something a bit more sophisticated in the next day or so.

Welcome Auburn and Mom2

Auburn

No-one needs any kind of special pedometer for this thread. Any old pedometer will do.
Some pedometers produce stats and others do not.

If yours simply tells you the stepcount - post that.

If you really want to know the distance it is not a difficult calculation. You need to measure your step length. This may be for instance something like 24.5 inches. You can measure this easily enough by measuring 10 steps and dividing by 10. In some pedometers you get the opportunity to key this in so that it is all set up.

If you multiply the stepcount by the steplength you get the distance walked in inches. Since that is too big a number for us to handle - you can convert it into miles by dividing it by the amount of inches in a mile. This is all that the pedometers do that display the distance in miles.

My pedometer does not convert to calories.

Mom2 - welcome to this little group. Would you believe that I walk all day - or at least it seems like that. I wear my pedometer all day long from first thing in the morning until last thing at night because every step we take burns calories and helps us towards the steps that we need to do to stay healthy. I have a medical problem which means that I put on weight extra easily and have difficulty taking it off - but I have discovered that I can get a near normal rate of weight loss with dieting if I walk excessive distances. This is a revelation for me - as I had struggled many times over the past 20 years to escape very definite morbid obesity and failed every time. I am fortunate in that I do not work - so I am effectively able to be a very large full time athlete. Every morning I go out on a 6.3 mile walk. In the afternoon I go out on another walk - often in the region of 3 to 4 miles. Sometimes in the evening I take another short walk when I am in my normal routine. In addition I attend various keep fit classes.

Mom2 - Well done for getting in your 10K steps.

Stacy - Well done for going out on that walk.

Margaret-wow I am very impressed! That is alot of walking. Do you prefer it to other forms of excercise or have you found it more effective for you since you can do more of it? Just out of curiousity. Judging by your tracker you have done phenomenally with this plan!

1/7/08 (at home& sick) 5071 1.96mi

Mom2 - Well done for walking what you did in difficult circumstances.

Thankyou for your comments.

I must admit that at my start weight I was very limited in what exercise I physically could do. I tried walking a lot based on something that I saw on tv and it did work wonders for me - especially after I built it up. I am of the attitude that if something works stick with it - especially after a lot of things didnt seem to work. Calorie counting alone always got me nowhere. I must admit - I havent dared to stop walking and do something else instead. I do extra things (this morning I had a keep fit class which included aerobics and pilates) but I always do my walking.

I do find that the walking gives me time to think and does happen to help me to feel tranquil which is a definite bonus.
