Owl writes about things that make people blush

Hi, I'm Owl! I'm 30, single, and ready to lose some fatty baggage. I've been told I have a problem with saying things that people don't want to hear...you know...TMI. I have a weird sense of humor, so if you get offended easily, stick around cause I'm going to have fun with you.

Here are my answers to the questions set forth for new diary starters:

-- How much weight do you want to lose?
50 lbs give or take a few, I realize that I may get stuck heavier but with lots of muscle, I can deal with that.

-- What is the timeframe for reaching your target weight?
No real time frame, things take time and when you assign it a time frame you run the risk of feeling defeated if you don't reach said goal in said amount of time. That being said, ideally I'd like to have the weight off by next year this time.

-- How do you want to accomplish your goal (what methods do you want to use)?
ugh, the dreaded "e" word...exercise and diet modification.

-- Who or what can support you in reaching your goal?
Well, my personal support system is sparse, being single and all, so I'm relying on on-line support and I'm also enrolled in a nutrition program with the University that I'll be in starting in September and running for two years. I think that program with offer me built in support.

-- How realistic is your goal?
It's really really real.

-- When will you start?

I'm a planner, a bit OCD too, so bear with me.

Everybody says don't eat below 1200 calories a day or you'll die, DIE DIE DIE! Okay, they don't say that exactly, but thats the feeling I get when I walk away from a hard core dieter and calorie counter. I previously lost a significant amount of weight just plain ol' starving myself, which worked, I didn't die, but it sucked. This time, I plan on eating and working out to balance things out. Last time, I just starved, no exercise, probably not the best decision making on my part, but it was cheap...

I figure I'll start off at a modest 1400 calorie a day diet with four days of cardio, two days of strength training and a day of rest and see where that gets me, I know I'll come to a point where I'll have to change it but I'll worry about that later. at 184 lbs 1400 calories a day is probably a decent start. I dont' want to start at 1200 calories because when that stops working...where do I go from there? I may even eat more calories if I find that I burn a lot up working out.

I live a good active lifestyle. I like to ride my mountain bike in tight jeans, hike, swim and go on long walks on the beach at sunset with hot brazillian men who wax their chests. So I'm not exactly seditary. I have a gym membership, which has sadly gone unused since my employer decided that gym memberships for all employees were a good idea to combat obesity related chronic disease (I work in the health care industry).

My eating plan is pretty simple: Lean meats, whole grains, lots of veggies and some fruits, accompanied by tons of chocolate, diet soda and vodka. I love vodka. I'm not a breakfast person, never have been. So my first mini goal is going to be to learn to eat breakfast instead of just chugging coffee and iced tea till 1pm.

Welcome :)

looks like you have your plan all sorted, looking forward to reading your journal

Diary Day 2:

Yep, I made it back here to post in my diary, if anything, I am not consistent so this is a special moment.

On monday I weighed in at 184 lbs, today, 181 lbs, very happy with my progress. I know its because I've been drinking a ton of water and flushing sodium and toxins out of my body...but I also took a gigantic crap this morning, probably due to my increase in fiber and I think that helped out a LOT. That, and Monday I was still suffering the effects of TOM so I may have been a bit bloated.

I'm enforcing a new sleeping routine at home. I feel tired all the time so I've decided that instead of staying up late and logging only about 4-6 hours of sleep a night I am going to start going to bed early and trying to get 8-10 hours of sleep. I just kicked my roommates out of my house so as soon as they are officially gone this should be much easier. They have opposite schedules then I do, as I wake up early and go to work and they bartend all night, come home and make noise till the wee hours (sometimes they were still up when I was getting up to get ready for work). So, it wasn't working to my benefit, and they were slacking on paying the rent on time so I axed them. And they had sex on my couch...ew...thats a biohazard! I much prefer to live alone and only advertised for roommates when fuel costs spiked so high last winter that I was hurting for cash, now the prices are down again and I can manage my household budget alone.

I have been craving steak for a few weeks now. I'm not a big red meat eater, but for some reason, once or twice a year I get a hankerin' for it and must have it. I may buy some tonight, cook it on the Foreman grill and eat it with broccoli...or, I may stay on my diet plan. A 4 oz serving of new york strip steak has about 250 calories when you trim the fat, so its totally doable if I axe the usual fixin's that go with it (potatos and butter sauteed mushrooms). I'll have to think on it, the craving could go away, its been known to happen.

Hi Owl! :)

I love vodka too - gotta be careful though, because a shot of vodka is 90 calories (give or take a few). It's pretty easy to suck through your daily calories with a couple of shots (or martinis or whatever).

One thing I noticed is your calorie level. Given the amount of exercise you do and at your current weight, you could eat more and still lose. The idea here is to eat as much as you can and still lose weight. I'd say you should start out around 1800 calories - which gives you some leeway.

Here's how I came up with that figure, just in case you want to know. Maintenance for someone who is moderately active can be estimated at 15 cals per pound of body weight. To figure a good weight loss number, take your maintenance calories and shave off about 30%. So for you:

184 * 15 = 2760 calories
2760 * 70% = 1932 calories

If you ate between 1800 and 1900 calories, I think you'd make good progress while not causing your metabolism to drop.

Hope that helps some!

Thanks! It does help, any excuse to eat more is a good one for me...lol! I definatly don't want to be on the low end of calorie consumption because I'm going to need somewhere to go when I stall out.

The janitor at my office is trying to sabatage me. He asks me to look stuff up online for him, usually about civil war soldiers, and pays me off with candy bars. I stuff them in the freezer so I'm not tempted. I just got another pay off from him, put it in the freezer and counted my stash...6 candy bars..lol!

Tell him the information super highway has a traffic jam until he starts bringing fresh fruit... ;)

I don't think he buys stuff from stores that sell produce...does the liquor store sell produce now? Lol! I figure by halloween I'll have enough candy to not have to buy anything for the kids. Or, I could just request my payments from now on come in a vodka bottle...

Hey!

Hey Owl, well done on the efforts so far! I really enjoyed reading your diary so far and will look forward to your next entry! Perhaps we can cheer each other on!

Marie: we totally can cheer eachother on! I don't know about you, but I joined for support, to give and to get. BTW, thanks for friending me, I never would have known about that function of the board had you not done that.

Fitforaking: Lol, right, they do have Absolut Mango and Absolut ruby red which are my fav flavored vodkas. They go really really good with a dash of Ocean Spray white cran peach and seltzer. Is coconut rum considered a fruit? hehehe...I don't have a problem with alcohol, I love it!

I'm an over-poster...I have random thoughts and tend to chat constantly. I just pulled my medical chart and signed up for our only open appointment today at clinic so that I can get a multi-vitamin. I think my steak craving is from lack of some kind of nutrient. I decided I'm not going to feed this craving, as I had a big salad for lunch with a guy I'm scoping out for a few dates (hottiehothot). besides, I'm not going to be able to make it to the gym tonight as a meeting came up at the last minute that I must attend and I promised my sister I'd let her pick at my bacne (she's studying to be an aethetician). So in leiu of dinner we'll be drinking a bottle of wine and eating lox on wasa crackers with low fat cream cheese, onion and capers. I have a digi scale in the kitch, so I'll have exact calorie counts to write in my calorie log, which is nice.

Right now I think I'm about two lbs lighter due to a blood draw. Two big tiger tops and two lavender tops! I swear I could feel my vein collapsing.

Fun fact: fish oil suppliment pills have 10 calories each, take three a day and thats 30 calories of good healthy fat. But you'll be burping up something fishy...trust me.

So, yesterday food wise was kind of a disaster. I did great all day, my sister changed her mind about wine and lox and decided my craving for red meat was something she was craving too, so we got 1 t-bone and split it three ways between her, me and my 7 year old son...well, four ways if you count the dog who got the bone and all the fat. I carmalized some onions with balsamic and nuked some broccoli, had two shots of tequila, lots of iced tea and then a hersheys bar with almonds. I think my total calories ended up being around 1800 yesterday.

Today I'm wearing really tight jeans. Maybe they will remind me not to eat crappy. They are so tight that after I put them on I had to run to the mirror and do a camel toe spot check. No toe, thank goodness. My belly is bulging into a serious muffin top though. I'm am a fashion offender. I can't wait till these jeans fit me right, they will look much better.

:D

Yeah I can't do fish oil supplements 'cause I can't deal with the fishy burps the rest of the day. I figure I eat salmon once a week and tuna at least once a week, and that will have to do for my fish oil fix.

Owl, you are SO funny!

I do the same exact thing with my jeans...haha check for camel toe!! :smilielol5:

I expect alot of good laughs from you! hahaha, weight loss doesn't have to be lonely!

what is your occupation in the health care industry? if you don't mind sharing! I'm a college graduate and burned my dream of going pre-med, so i've applied to CLS programs *crosses fingers*

See ya later!! :auto:
