Omega's journey

Hi Margaret,
I've been away from your journal for a few days, and I see that you've come down with a cold. That's no fun, and I hope you get better soon. I know you don't need any advice on what to do to get better. :)

I have to give you a pat on the back for keeping up with your eating and walking. I know it's difficult to do it when you're not feeling your best.

:hug2::hug2::hug2:

Hi Kimberly

Thanks for popping by. I must admit I have been very remiss at getting to diaries myself over the last few days. I think that it is the germs making me crap at thinking straight. I hope that things are going well for you.

Two days out of the last three I have effectively ignored my creaming routine - just managing a morning moisturising of my face. Lets face it - I often skip one of the two abdomen bio-oil massages but I am pretty good about the rest.

It is supposed to be:
daytime moisturising
2 bio oil massages to abdomen
body lotion thighs
body lotion bum
body lotion upper arms
body lotion boobs
night-time moisturising

That is a lot of things to just miss out of a routine.

I have a lot of skin that I am trying to persuade to shrink.

Thank Goodness that I am managing to keep my keep my food right and keep up my steps.

Take care
Love
Margaret

Hey Margaret~ :seeya:
How are you this morning? Hope your feeling well. :)
I know you do alot of walking (okay so that is like a major understatement! :smilielol5:) and was wondering what kind of pedometer do you have. Or what would you recommend I look for in a pedometer.
I got one in the mail that was a "gift" for subscribing to a magazine but it seems awful touchy. In that you barely move and it says I took 20 steps. When I didn't! :icon_bs:
I do like the fact that it had a place for me to put my weight in so when I glanced at it not only did I see how many steps I had taken but also how many cals I had burned. Oh and it would tally all the steps up into miles.
So what advice ya got for me?
Also exactly where at on my body should I wear it. Silly question I know but I figure that my hip gets a bit more bounce if you know what I mean. :sifone:

Hi Bellaryna

Thanks for popping by.

I must admit to still having germs and still not thinking straight. I am missing out on doing things that I should do - but am still getting all my walking and exercise in and still keeping my food to plan.

I have had 3 models of pedometers and the best one for me is the one that a friend got for me from Weight Watchers. She had one and recommended it and so I thought that I would give it a go.

I wear it on my waistband above the centre of my right knee. It seems to work best there.

I am quite fussy and am fairly comfortable that it works ok - although I walk such similar walks that I sort it out if a problem arises.

Generally I used the concepts of sanity, consistency and replication to confirm that it works ok.

Sanity

You measure a step length and key it in. It counts the steps and tells you how many miles you have done. You drive the same walk (e.g. 6.3 miles) and check the distance using the tripometer. It makes sense if it all agrees.

Consistency
So you have walked 6.3 miles on day 1. Make a note of start and end stepcount and distance.
Walk it again a few more times and compare the deduced walk stepcount and distance (i.e. end stepcount less start stepcount etc).
You cannot expect it to be identical - but it should be a reasonably similar number.

Replication

This demonstrates my eccentricity - but I admit to it anyway.
Dont feel that I am saying that you should do this.
Anyway I just happen to have a second WW pedometer.
I have been known to clip one above the centre of my left knee and compare deduced walk stepcounts. The last time that I did this there was only a difference of about 40 steps over 6.3 miles which I though was pretty impressive when you pause to knock stones out of sandals and chat etc.

My husband had to get a pedometer that clips to a pocket. It seems to work ok - the only real flaw is that it is designed for exercise only so it doesnt count the first 4 seconds of any piece of walking activity. My husband doesnt like that aspect because he thinks that if you do the steps you should get the step credit for having done them.

The WW one is no good for him because he has a much bigger tummy than me (he is over 350 pounds). Basically if a roll of tummy (or boob for that matter) hangs over the pedometer it can suppress some of the steps so it gives you a low count. When I first got my pedometer I needed to start wearing a more supportive bra.

Am off out walking again now.

Take care
Love
Margaret

Thanks Margaret!
Hubby just started WW so I will have him check to see how much the price is and perhaps I will get one for Christmas.
Appreciate the time that you took in your reply. I will definately take into consideration all that you said!
See ya!
Have fun walking!

:seeya: Margaret
Sorry about your rotten cold! Those evil germs are just :ack2: yukky!

Hey, you and I are at the same pound now!! LOL I wasn't sure I would exercise today, but knowing we are at the same weight, and that you will be doing your walking today, inspires me to do likewise!

Feel better my friend :grouphug:

cheers
janice

I hope you get well very soon! :hug2:

Bless your heart.

It really stinks to have something mess up our strict routines and the ways we like things to be done/get done!

That's almost exactly how mine works, but
- if you walk for less than 4 seconds, it counts nothing
- if you walk for more than 4 seconds, it counts everything, including the steps in those 4 seconds. (I've seen it "jump" to catch up, so can confirm it does this.)

I agree with him that the "two steps to grab something from the other desk" should count. :)

hi

just thought i'd drop in and say hi. you are doing so gr8. motivates me each time i visit ure diary. Thanx.

I've been wearing the pedometer all day an dso far i've got 8500 steps. woohooo (i'm above average).

x

Thank you for visiting and giving me lots of support again. I really appreciate it. Thanks for all your good wishes regarding these germs. I am hoping that they will beat a retreat soon. I feel a bit brighter and hope that it is not a false dawn. My food and exercise are still firmly controlled. I think that it is easier when you are a creature of habit. There is less to think about.

Bellaryna

Your husband is ideally placed for seeing if you can get one. It is called a Weight Watchers Points Pedometer. It gives not only the stepcount and miles but also tells you how many WW points you have earned to supplement your diet. I ignore this but am thinking that I will try and find out about it for when I am facing maintenance (if I get that far!).

Janice

I hope that you enjoyed your walk today. My pedometer is just about up to 11 miles for the day but will not get much higher as I am in my relaxing time not long before bed.

You are still slimmer than me for the following reasons:
1/ You are lighter than me by 8/10 of a pound on today's weighing.
2/ Your BMI is less than mine because you are taller.
3/ I weigh every day and often go up slightly after a new low. It really would neither surprise or worry me if my ticker moved back a little tomorrow.

I am however pleased to report that my weight is still moving in the right direction and everything indicates that we are all going to get to where we want to be.

Stacy

I think that having strict routines is what is saving my weight loss project at the minute. There is little in the way of decisions concerning where to walk, what to do, what to eat. I can cope as long as everything keeps going to plan. I was less than impressed with hubby on Monday. I planned what we would both eat and he announced that he did not want that - preferring it later in the week. I told him that he could cook what he wanted for himself and that if I was changing my plans after 6 pm it would be to do less. I cut myself some tomato, cucumber and tuna and had that for my meal and cooked nothing. He had to sort himself out.

Sarah

A book on comfort foods sounds good - especially with as many germs about. It never harms to be prepared. I hope that you have got your internet problems all sorted out now - or are you getting a quick fix while visiting friends / relatives like was the case the other day?

There is nothing wrong with a little nosiness. We call it "having an inquiring mind".

I am a geordie who married a lad from Twickenham - and therefore lives in the suburbs to the west of London. We go up to Newcastle every so often to visit my somewhat elderly parents.

Did I see in your diary that you are in the north-west?

Phoebe

It is good that your pedometer jumps to catch up and gives you those initial steps some of the time. Hubby swears that his stepcount would be tons bigger if his counted every step. I'm just glad that mine does. You certainly seem to be getting into the swing of all this walking.

I swear that the best two things that I have bought this year have been a brilliant set of scales (digital with decimal places that copes well with both our weights) and the pedometer. Our previous scales just had pounds and half pounds and only went up to 22 stone. We could not weigh hubby.

Take care

Hi Angel

With 8,000 steps you are well above average.

Tell the world about your achievements.

Post your pedometer statistics in lots of challenges:

1/ 10,000 steps - you dont need to hit 10,000 every time - just be aware that is the recommendation and do your best. That is how you improve
2/pedometer buddies
3/ exercise challenge

also if your pedometer translates to miles -
4/ post in the new "burger to lettuce" road trip

Let everyone know how well you are doing. Be proud of your achievements.

Take care
Love
Margaret

Hi Margaret,
Well, I think I might be joining the rest of you with colds. I am going to try and nip this in the bud though--drinking lots of fluids and pumping myself full of vitamin C. I know my mind is sick :biggrinjester: but now it looks like my body may be, too. :biggrinjester: Anyway, I hope you kick that cold to the curb soon.

I see your weight is down again--congrats on that!

So do you still have your Geordie accent, or have years of living in the South weakened it?

Do I need to nag you about your creaming regimen? :biggrinjester:

Hey Margaret!

I just thought I would pop in and say hi. Wow, your diary is busy. Which is an excellent thing... :)

I will pop in tomorrow and read more. Its late at night and I went to too thin banana republic and tried a hand cream which was very perfumey ... allergic ..headache and all! lol
I think I am done with expensive stores that don't have my size ... My new friend is noticing she can't fit in banana republic clothing anymore, and people are asking if she is pregnant... to me she looks thin ...average ..a little tubby ..but she is really pretty and cute....

I so wish to get down to 195 ... but I am 295 lol
she says she would never guess how high I am in weight ...she thought I was her size ... umm a compliment ...but I know ... its not true, but for it to be true ..one must walk ..and thats what I am doing tomorrow ...

and I have been thinking of you, Frankie ..everyone ...and I have been thinking walking is where I know I can do my best and I rock at it ...so ..thats what I am going to do ...

Thanks for writing in my diary ..I so appreciate your advice ..words ..everything

thanks hun

Thanks for visiting.

Kimberly

I am sorry that you are coming down with this cold. I hope that you manage to fend it off before it takes hold and that you feel better soon. It is Wednesday morning now and I am hoping that it is improving a bit. I didnt go through quite as many paper hankies yesterday and at least I managed to get my creaming done to an average level. I normally miss off one of the bio-oil massages - especially now that the days are shorter. It sounds daft - but there just isnt time to do the creaming in the afternoons if you want to get most of the walking in before it gets dark.

My weight is taking a pleasant downwards trend - although weighing every day you get used to seeing it wiggle both down and up. It is always nice to see a new low for the first time though. My next milestone will be twelve and a half stone.

My accent was always more northern than geordie. The reason for that is that my heritage is pretty much purely Cumbrian. When I was a young child we headed over to Cumbria (Cumberland as it was then) pretty much on a weekly basis. I had lots of aunties and uncles that we used to stay with just about every weekend. This meant that the geordie kids thought that I had an odd accent. The daft thing is that the Cumbrian kids thought the same.

As I headed south my accent undeniably softened. This is due in part to the fact that I spent a lot of time with my husband - who has a lovely west London accent. Also the fact that I have worked with people from all over everywhere.

My cousins accuse my of talking like a southerner. People that I have worked with here say that you cannot miss my northern accent.

I would say that my accent is undeniably a softened northern accent. I suspect that many would be uncertain whether it was noth-eastern or north-western.

Certainly if you ever see me posting on the creaming regime that I have missed off more than a bio-oil massage - you can know that I am definitely dropping a ball which should not be dropped. A bit of nagging never goes amiss in such circumstances. I am asking a lot of my skin and do want it to try and cope with a lot of punishment. I do think that the creaming and massaging helps. I have loose skin - but less than I thought that I would have at this stage of the game.

Natalie Jo

It is absolutely ages since I bought any new clothes. Luckily I had a big trunk full of all sorts of big sized clothes at different sizes that I had grown out of. After I started losing weight - I was able to play dress-ups in my clothes from when my weight was going up. I found a few outfits to wear and wore those for the next month or two. Then I went through the trunk again.

I am now down to the sizes that I sent most of my clothes to charity shops. I was so certain I would never be as light as this again. A good problem - but a problem just the same. I have a dress and two leisure suits and some t shirts. I am living in these clothes because I want to lose more weight and save my money for when I am the size that I want to be.

Dont think of your whole size in pounds at this stage. I dont honestly think that it helps. It is just a number. Remember - I have been there. I think that if you spend too much time thinking about that number it can convince you that the task is impossible - or at least too hard. At least that is how it was for me.

You know that you are a big girl. You know that your health would benefit if you were to lose some weight. Leave it at that. That is all you really need to think about.

Weigh yourself just the same. Make a note of the number just the same so that you can track your progress. Just try not to think too hard about the number or the size of project that you would really like it to be.

Yes - you know that you would be better off if you lost 100 pounds - but your health would be improving if you lost 10 pounds. Deal with that and then look into the next chunk.

I am pleased that you have decided to do some walking. I am convinced that it will be the deciding factor regarding whether your weight loss project is successful or not. This is certainly the case for me, and I do think that we have much in common.

I am out walking every day.
Frankie is out walking every day.
I do hope that you will make time to come out walking every day too.

Take care
Love
Margaret
