Omega's journey

Hi Natalie Jo

Good to see you back. I had wondered how you were getting on. Studying hard and feeling low.... I am not surprised. Set aside some time where you pamper yourself.

I am so cross that Weight Watchers put me off walking 11 years ago. I had even started walking a couple of miles in the morning and the same at night and they effectively told me not to bother. Now I realise looking back that the time I stopped because they told me not to bother was just about when my weight loss ground to a halt. I am 48 years old now and could have been a different shape in my late 30s and all my 40s. My life could have been so different.....

I firmly believe that walking is the best way for us PCOS girls to drop any weight. I tried so many times without the walking and got nowhere. Like you I have counted calories so many times that I have a decent idea of calories even when I dont count them - just by being in the "being good with my food" mindset.

It sounds like that appetite suppressant bar you tried was a lesson to us all. Some things just do not do what they promise.

So - you have 9 pounds to lose - you have done it before and can do it again. Like with your birthday celebration gain - recently added weight seems to come off quite quickly if you refocus and get back into the swing of things. I know that you can do it.
Take lots of care
Love

It rained while I was out. The good news was that a complete stranger walked up to me in the street this morning and said that she sees me every day and that I look a lot slimmer.

General Data:

Morning walk = 6.3 miles.
Round the block = 4 times (on one lap my husband came too)
Extra exercises = yoga class
Weight = 13st 1.6lbs (i.e. 183.6 pounds)
Steps = 26,591
Distance = 9.86 miles
Remembered to take normal vitamin / supplements
Continued my creaming regime

Food / Drink:

NB I have no target calories. I am not trying to reach any magic number.
Challenge gives a bonus if calories between 1850 and 2150

1 banana = 107 calories
3 weetabix (190 cal), sweetener (4 calories), 350 ml skimmed milk (123 cal) = 317 calories.
1 handful honey Shreddies = 126 calories
115g chicken (197 cal), 200g boiled potato (160 cal) ,50g carrot (21 cal), 50g peas (28 cal), 40g swede (8 cal), 150ml gravy (42 cal) = 456

Wow, that's great. It's always nice when someone notices without you telling them. How fantastic. :)

The Christmas Card exchange sounds fun. I think I will do it. :) I kinda already signed up for it, but never sent anyone my address.

Hi TiredAussieMum

Thanks for popping by my diary.

I am pleased that Weight Watcher suits you and wish you luck with it.

I tried them once 11 years ago. At that time they said that walking was no good for weight loss and you had to jog or run. I was too big for any of that and it actually put me off walking. I believe that weight watchers has since changed their attitude to walking (and indeed I have a Weight Watchers pedometer). Anyway like so many diets that I have tried that focus on the food (and effectively calorific aspects under one guise or another) I put on everything that I lost and more the minute that I stopped. I found it unsustainable.

My weight loss project focuses on walking and not on calories at all really. Most people have so many calories that they allow themselves (or so many WW points) as the central part and view exercise as a "nice to have". I try to walk about 11 miles a day (which is around 30,000 steps) and eat healthily. Any calorie-consciousness that crops up is certainly in the "nice to have" category around the edges.

Take care
Best wishes
Margaret

I am a BIG BIG fan of walking love it I walked like 7 miles max once not all at the same time tho but WOW 11 miles that is awesome.so in your gyestmate guess what is 10,000 steps = to in miles?\

Good Advice

TY for dropping by my diary. You were right, about the calories. I just got the book from Amazon over the weekend, and last night I read the part about calorie intake... what I was using was way too low.

MissT

I hope that you do manage to get back to England as I would love to meet you. I think that you are a cool person too.

Aww...thanks. :D

I had a look over a few recent pages of your diary late last night. I didnt quite get to the latest entry as it was really late and we went to bed.

LOL! My diary was very pervy last night. It's not normally like that. Oh, who am I kidding..LOL. Life is too short not to have fun. :sifone:

When I worked at CSFB (Canary Wharf) there was a Phillipino lad joined our team. Anyway when he turned up - his name was Orville Ponce.:smilielol5: I thought - oh my Goodness how will we keep a straight face - I know he might have a nickname that we could use instead and not use either of those names. So I got talking to him and said how we were a friendly bunch and did he have a nickname that he would prefer us to use. His face really lit up and he said that yes he had a nickname - it was Bong. Apparently it is quite a common nickname for Phillipino lads. And that is how we got a member of our team called Bong Ponce. :smilielol5::smilielol5::smilielol5::smilielol5:

Ok, what am I missing here? I don't get it...am I just slow tonight or what? I get Bong as in beer bong, etc...but ponce and orville, Please enlighten me. :)

I'm sorry your hubby isn't very interested in losing weight. Has his quality of life suffered b/c of it? It's great that lady noticed how much you've lost. Must be a real upper to have people say stuff like that. I'm going to the extended family Christmas party at the beginning of Dec. I haven't seen any of them since last Christmas, so it will be intersting to see if they notice that I've dropped 50+lbs since they last saw me.

I bet that felt great to hear that! It's nice when people give compliments and even nicer when it comes from complete strangers. :)

Sometimes when I read your daily food intake, I see things that I have no idea what they are. I forget to ask.....but next time, I'm going to ask right away before I forget.

How are your feet holding up?

Take care. :)

Hi Margaret, just checking in. I see you are doing well on you weight loss! I'm jealous! It's obvious you'll get to 180 way ahead of me :)

All the best!

Thanks once again dear friends for popping by my diary. I really appreciate your company and support.

Jennifer, Anne and Kimberly - it was really nice of that lady to comment. I suppose that it is a lesson to us all to approach a complete stranger that we may see and do the same. A lot of us may notice a change to a complete stranger - but it takes a certain amount of courage to approach them and start talking.

Jennifer

I have sent you a PM about addresses.

Tammy

The walking is just something that built up as the year moved on and the project continued. As a PCOS lady it is just a miracle to find something that actually works for me. Looking at my recent pedometer readings - on 18th October I hit 30,019 and the pedometer calculated that to be 11.13 miles. Since 19 steps doesnt get you very far I reckon that is the best guess for 30,000 steps. Divide by 3 for 10,000 steps and you have 3.71 miles.

This is however set for my size steps because the pedometer is set up for me.

It isnt rocket science to work out what it is for you.

All you do is measure how long your stride is. You can do that by putting your heels on a marked point and stepping forward 10 steps. Measure that distance in inches and divide by 10. That is an average step length.

If you multiply that amount of inches by 10,000.

Now since we like to think of big distances in terms of miles and not inches - all you do is convert to miles.

You just take that huge amount of inches and divide by the amount of inches in a mile - which is 63360.

If your step is 26 inches - you get (26 * 10,000) / 63360 = 4.10 miles
If your step is 23.5 inches - like me - you get (23.5 * 10,000) / 63360 = 3.71 miles

Thank Goodness for calculators on computers...

I think that my diet has evolved from that described in this link. I am hugely inspired by Charlie Walduck that followed that diet and lost 420 pounds in 2 years - he went from 44st (616 pounds) to 14st (196 pounds).

I heard in a television interview Charlie say that he now often does 30,000 steps and that was enough to convince me that was what I wanted to aim to do.

MissT

I am pleased to help. The task is hard enough without going into starvation at the start.

Kimberly

I agree about life being too short not to have fun.

I would say that my husband's quality of life has suffered because of his weight. It has certainly exacerbated the effects of gout over the years which means now that he has a lot of damage to his leg and foot joints.

This was the main reason why the last house we bought was a bungalow (even though he was still in his late 30s then) - because it is obvious that he will have difficulty with stairs as he gets older. Infact - we later sold that house and decided to downsize and moved back into the house that we lived in when we first married which we had rented out. This means that he has stairs again - which are ok most days but sometimes cause him a problem.

My husband is certainly not as fit as he was when he was young. You can say - who is - but having said that it would be nice if we both were. I am certainly fitter now than I have been in the last 20 years and it would be nice if he was too.

I am sure that your relatives will notice the difference in your size. I saw some of my cousins last weekend that I hadnt seen since last christmas. They were all telling me how proud they are of me. I know what my change was like after 50 pounds and know that your change will be very noticeable too.

Anne

I really hardly want to tempt fate - but my feet seem to be better than they were. If they stay like this I will be quite content. I hope that yours are improving.

Please ask about any food items we have here. One thing is for sure - I will suffer if there is a raisin shortage.

Lagniappe

We are doing this as a team and not a race. What we want is for us all to get there - and together we will.:hurray:

Wow, Margaret! You've been going great guns since I was last in this forum - only a couple of pounds and you will no longer be a "teen" girl!:D

I can sympathise with you on the calorie-counting front - I loathe it because I get very anal about it. What has helped me this time around is using Fitday because I find it focusses my mind on the bigger health picture as much as the calories themselves.

What I do is try to hit the RDA of nutrients every day (with the exception of zinc which I know that my diet will never provide enough of so I supplement it) therefore, even on a day when I have exceeded my calorie target by some distance I can look at the nutrient values and say to myself "Oh well - at least I gave my body what it needed!" and feel that I have not failed. That way I can tolerate the occasional less-than-perfect day without beating myself up and allowing it to de-rail the whole process.

These mental games we play with ourselves are so important. Maintaining a positive approach is what it's all about at the end of the day.

I'm glad to see your blisters have improved - they're the last thing you need when you are walking for England! I could only dream of doing your daily stepcount...you are amazing!

I'll try to stop by more often - I had 7 pages to catch up on today  That'll teach me to slack off on my diary writing/visiting!:p:D:eek:

Keep up the good work! (I know you will!)

Hi Avenue

Thanks for your support and advice.

I did try Fitday once and didnt find it helped me mentally at all. It gave me even more bits to think - I could never do this if I wasnt dieting. A major problem I have with calorie counting is that I never do it if not dieting.

My philosophy with food is that each day I want protein, dairy, carbohydrate, 5 portions of fruit and veg. Also I want a little fat a couple of times a week.

In addition I try and get a big can of baked beans in at least once a week as it is really good for cholesterol.

I strive to manage 2 litres of water every day - but sometimes dont quite manage it.

Additionally I find that I get pained if I do not have a vast quantity of raisins every day.

My aim is to make the above rules second nature so that I eat this way for the rest of my life.

Sorry about the seven pages. I hope that it didnt take too long for you to read through.

Take care
Love

Ah well. Dieting is such an individual thing I guess what works for some will not work for others. And we should definitely stick with what works for each of us! :D Fitday has been good for me because I apparently have a tendency to starve myself (!) so it stops me under-eating. You obviously regulate things better than I do.

And you are so right - the changes we make have to be sustainable for life otherwise we will only end up back where we started. I have done that so many times in my life already and I'm only sorry it's taken me so long to realise the truth of it.

I have to say that I'm fascinated by your raisin intake. I am a big fan of raisins myself; love the taste and their iron and fibre content is very useful. However, I have to be careful because they are one of my traditional binge foods :(

I wasn't complaining about the 7 pages by the way - I didn't mean it to come across that way at all. I find your journey intriguing, especially as you are fighting against the PCOS which I knew almost nothing about before I started reading here. I admire your dedication to your diet and your diary - you are truly inspiring. :)

Hi Avenue

I am pleased that Fitday is good for you. It seems to be for quite a lot of people. You are so right when you say that we must adopt a tailored approach. Like so often - one size does not fit all.

PCOS is a pain. I knew absolutely nothing about it for a long time - and then I discovered that I was basically a textbook example of it. By the time I saw the specialist the first time I had everything and had it for so long. It basically encompassed everything that I didnt like about my life. Funny that!

Take care

Morning Margaret!

You know I was just telling someone this morning, that I've lost almost 30 lbs now, and I didn't have to give up so to speak any food I like, I just cut back on the bad stuff. I've been there, when I stopped eating carbs, or stopped eating sweets, or fast food or any of those other bad for you foods, but it didn't work, I may have lost 15-20 pounds cutting them out, but a year later I was back to eating them again and I gained it all back. I have found what works for me is, eat what I want, but only small portions of it. I don't want to give up ANYTHING anymore for weight loss, I'm only on this earth for so long, and while I'm here I want to eat the good stuff, if I want it of course, not because of boredom or stress.

It's worked for me now and I plan on making this my lifestyle change. Before my H would bring home pizza and I would have 3 large slices, now I'm content with 1 large or 2 med size, I don't eat fast food anymore, I live to far out of town to bother, and when I'm at work during the week, I would rather make my lunch and bring it than spend money outside the office on crap. I think the KEY to any successful weight loss, is consistency, on food & exercise, that's it!!

Okay, I think I've used up half your diary on my ranting. SORRY!! Hope your walk today is a good one!! :seeya:
Later Gator!
Kim

Hi Kim

Thanks for popping by.

My walks today have gone fine so far thanks - up to 8.81 miles so far on the pedometer - just one more walk to do.

I just went out to put my banana skin in the compost bin and I spotted one last courgette where the courgette plants were. That can go in tonight's pasta.

We have both been saying exactly the same thing in different ways. That we need to lose this weight in a way that we can continue onwards. We need to adopt new habits that do not feel like dieting so that we never really stop.

Feel free to rant in my diary any day. It is always nice to see you.

Take care
Love

Hi sweetie..

Sorry I didn't get ta pop in yesterday.. The forum just would not load..

<Grrrrrr> lol

>>>>

Hope yer havin' a goal reachin' and happy Thursday! :hug2:

OooO goodness, I see Bong Ponce again! :sifone:

lol

Hi Margaret
Wow, I would fall over if a total stranger told me I was looking slimmer! What a kind thing for her to do, and what a great boon to you! I am looking forward to seeing some pics of you so I, too, can see the tremendous difference!

Glad you are keeping up with your walking! Do remember to buy new shoes at least once per year. With all of the mileage you are putting on them, they will wear out sooner and not offer all of the support you should have. I would absolutely HATE for you to develop plantar fasciitis due to poor foot support...it is very painful.

Anyway, hope your week has gone well thus far and your scale reflects it!

cheers
janice
