Omega's journey

Thanks for visiting.

Kelly

I hope that your day is going well.

I am not sure that I will benefit vastly from WW initially - as I am pretty happy with my food plan and it seems to fit in fine with their programs. The people were nice so obviously there are social benefits from the start. The main benefit for me is going to be in the whole realm of learning how to maintain. I know how to gain weight (I really could gain weight for England) and I have found a formula that seems to work for me for losing weight - but I have no experience in maintaining. The whole idea is full of potential hazards and I have been worrying about it for a while. I need as much expertise as I can get. I think that it will be a win-win situation as everyone was very interested and I got the impression motivated by my weightloss to date.

I am sorry that you missed your class because I know that you get a lot out of it. Well done on managing to often be good with your food - maybe the meals out will stop you wanting to go to those places for a while into the future - sometimes it is easier to resist if we feel like we have had a recent fix.

As for the water - you know what you should be doing - but we are all only human. You can pick it up again when you feel ready to do so. Remember - none of us are perfect.

On checking out the meals - I was delighted to note that they have loads of veg which are zero points. That means that you can eat as much as you like of those all day long. They even give a recipe for soup and a recipe for vegetable curry which have zero points. I shall probably make these sometime as I am all in favour of the notion of getting something for nothing. Most fruit things seem to be either half a point or one point.

Take care

I am sorry that it will put a dampener on your walking event. I think that you certainly want some sort of kagoul. After 18 hours of walking in the rain you will be able to take the world-famous drowned rat title from me for the USA. I hope that makes you feel just as proud as I am when I win it for England.

LOL! I certainly will think of you. What is a kagoul? I'm thinking it must be a rain poncho. I wonder if they will make us walk even if it's lightning out--I don't know if it's worth risking getting struck by it..lol.

The pts thing is interesting. I'm glad that your current eating easily falls within your pts allowed. I know you don't like disruptions in that aspect..lol. That's cool that you earn extra pts with your WW pedometer.

Hi Kimberly

I suspect that a kagoul and a rain poncho must be kind of the same thing. A kagoul is a light weight waterproof jacket - often that folds up into next to nothing so that you can carry it in a bag for when the rain starts. The only time I ever had a poncho of any sort - it was brightly coloured and knitted / crocheted and fashionable in the late 1960s or possibly very early 1970s. It was basically a rectangle with a hole for your head to go through.

I hope that the organisers keep you all safe - I dont like the idea of lightening for you.

In all honesty - if my eating plan hadnt fitted in with either WW options I would have stuck to my eating plan and seen if I kept on losing weight. I cannot imagine that anyone would care if I was losing weight (albeit slowly). The main reason that I am doing it is to get the benefits of their spin on maintenance. I dont care if I get little benefit today as long as I get something to deal with what worries me about tomorrow. In fact - I really think that it has turned into a really good move. It is great that I dont even have to change what I do or be dishonest.

The latest news is that we have decided to put off the Greek holiday until September. It transpired that while the doctor thinks I am well enough to travel - I will still have to be on restricted movement until the hospital has cleared me. Heaven knows when I am going to get my hospital appointment for that. Things would be much nicer if I was not in any way below par for my holiday.

Take care

Yes, I believe a kagoul and a rain poncho are the same thing. :)

Putting off your Greece trip might not be such a bad thing, as you'll feel 100% at that point, and also the weather will probably be nice I would imagine. Airfare might also be cheaper. :)

I didn't think you'd modify your eating to suit WW..lol. And I would see no reason to. Why should you change something that is clearly working well for you?

i hope that once you will learn what you need about maintaing at your meetings! i think whats great with being a gold member is that you can pop in when ever you like to get a few tips and tricks :)

Sorry that you have had to postpone your holiday

OK then, so we have you for the summer. I agree with Kimberley, I would not change ONE THING about your fantabulous plan. You dont get any better than that. Only wish I would eat the stuff and nothing else too..

Thanks for visiting.

I dont want to miss out because I cannot do things on holiday. It is bad enough having limited activities at home! We had got stuck in the mindset whereby we had been thinking about June for a holiday for ages before the op and Rod had agreed at work for time off then. We had got to thinking that if we had a holiday it would have to be June. September is a great time for a holiday there. My favourite panagiri festival is on at Skiadi. August is too hot (all my friends get ratty and they are expected to work silly hours if they work in tourism - so it isnt a great choice even though the Gennadi festival is then) - so September is a really obvious choice. The only real negative about September instead of June is that the days are shorter.

I really enjoyed the meeting yesterday and fully expect that to continue for a long time. I think that regular attendance throughout maintenance will help me to keep on top of things.

Claudia
The great thing about eating the healthy stuff is that it generally is low enough calories so that I can eat as much as I want. The fact that it is good for me is a bonus.

Iam glad that enjoyed the meeting yesterday! you will be proud of me i had to walk today and know its not a lot but i walked about 0.5 in 10 mins thats quite good for me! probably wont be doing it again soon as i walked because the lift to where i work was full with the kids i pick up!

That's great that you are happy with the postponement of the Greece trip. I'm sure you'll enjoy yourself as much or more in Sept. :)

I have a pedometer situation and I can't think of a better person to go to for advice than you. :D I used it on my walk tonight, and it said I took 4,141 steps and walked 1.554 miles. Well, I know for a fact that I walked 2 miles--I've measured it on maps and on my car's odometer. It's definitely 2 miles. Also, I put the pedometer on and walked around the house a bit before going out for my walk. The only thing I can think of is that my long legs have longer strides than the pedometer is giving me credit for. There is no way I can set it to reflect otherwise. I think yours must be more advanced than mine. Should I just assume that 1 mile for me = about 2050 steps? I'm going to wear it on my walk tomorrow as well and see what it reads. I am fairly certain it isn't cheating me of steps, as I can hear clicking as I take a step.

OOO Margaret you joined WW. It should be good for you when you need to maintain!
Don't worry about your wieght going up a little bit, considering you had a pretty serious emergency operation not so long ago you have done really well!

Good luck =D

Well done for walking. Every walk helps. I wasnt always walking the distances that I walk today. When I first started out - a short walk was great to get me going. I just kept increasing it and seeing that extra effort reflected in my weightloss and got hooked.

Kimberly
Pedometers, pedometers...... I had a major pedometer incident yesterday (Wednesday) in that the battery on one of my pedometers went totally flat. Not really a surprise when you consider how long I have had it and the level of usage. Thank goodness I had recorded the previous days steps into my spreadsheet and that I was wearing two pedometers so that I still have a good idea of my steps for yesterday. The battery is now replaced so I am back to normal.

As for your problem - my pedometer allows you to input your stride (i.e. step length) manually or default to an average setting based on your height which you have to enter. I input my step length. I notice that it can change based on which shoes you wear.

I know that my pedometer robs me if the waistband on my trousers is not very fitting because it does not detect that all the steps have taken place (it is often the first sign that I need to go down a size - especially with elastic waists). I also get robbed if my bra is not supportive enough (my boobs hang down and act as shock absorbers) and therefore do not record all the steps that I take. I also get robbed if my clothes get bundled up stopping everything from being detected.

If you are fairly certain that all your steps were being detected then you can do as you suggest and say that x steps is the equivalent of a mile. That is after all what the pedometer does when you input the step length. It multiplies the number of steps by the steplength in inches and then it divides by the number of inches in a mile (63360) in order to translate the result into miles so that we can mentally process the big number.

After checking your clothing - I would check your steplength is set to the appropriate one for your exercise walks, note the start count / distance info, walk a known mile and see what end readings you get.

If you get something similar to the 2,050 steps you got yesterday - basically calculate your own miles based on 2,050 steps. If it is very different do this exercise again and look for some consistency or put on a second pedometer. I know that everyone thinks that I am mad - but thank goodness I was wearing two yesterday. I know that my body knows how many steps I have done and I will get any resultant weightloss - but I would have been really upset not to know.

As if you have not got enough walking in front of you - there - I have just suggested you walk some more. With friends like that - who needs enemies!!!

I really do think joining WW is the best move that I have made in preparation for maintenance. I really dont want to turn into a yoyo. I know that I am going to need all the expertise that I can get.

I am pretty sure that my weight will start heading back down pretty soon. I know that I have lots of brilliant milestones that are not too far away.

Take care

I was planning on going for another walk today anyway..lol. My pedometer isn't sophisticated enough to let me adjust for height/step length, etc. So, I'll see what it says for this walk. If it averages out close to 2,050 steps per mile again, I will just use that and chalk it up to my long strides...lol. However, as the hours go by, I think my stride will shorten. Hmm...this might be hard to calculate. I'll do my best. :)

Good morning/afternoon M~
I am glad to see that things are still cruising along for you. Man I would have been honked off seriously if I were using a pedometer and it quit on me. As I don't do the spreadsheet thing like you do. No real computer abilties aside of emails and forums! LOL :smilielol5:
I have to say that I am sooooo jealous :drool5: of Kimberly getting to come and visit you. Sounds like it will be a wonderful trip for her and her dh as well as getting to see you in person will top it off.
Well MIL should be calling in minute now so I better be getting around to going to the store. Man that woman loves to shop! :smilielol5:
Hope that you continue to have some wonderful walks.
Catch ya later.

Thanks for visiting.

Kimberly

Glad to see that you were planning on walking today. Why let a little thing like a non-stop walking event put you off getting today's walk in! Thankfully I wasnt being too mean to suggest a walk today after all.

I wouldnt worry too much about your step length getting shorter when you get tired. Some inaccuracies have to be accepted. I dont change my steplength whenever I change shoes - just when I change the predominant pair of shoes (e.g. I wear a hole through one pair and stop wearing them and find I am wearing another pair most of the time).

Dawn
Computer abilities are over-rated in today's society. You have all you need with the forum and emails. I rarely use more than that myself (too busy out walking!) I do like my spreadsheet - it is my top reference document. I really would not know what I was doing if I lost it.

It seems like Kimberly is getting to meet so many people this summer. I wish that I was able to get to meet you like you both have planned.

Many of us will envy your great relationship with your MIL. I hope that if she loves to shop she will spend a little of her money on you and yours. I bet it would give her so much pleasure too.

I have to say that the nicest walk that I have been on recently was a week and a half ago when Rod and I went round the grounds at Hatchlands.

We have walked there many times before because we are members of the National Trust so we pay membership once a year but do not pay when we go to visit.

Take care

Margaret

margaret that looks like a nice place to have a walk around where abouts in surrey is it as it would be nice to go there one day with my mum and co :)

Hi Margaret
So glad you enjoyed your WW mtg. I find mine very encouraging. We have a simply *marvelous* leader, a real dynamo. Loads of fun and it's great to know she's kept her weight off nearly 10 years.

Keep doing what you are doing!

cheers
