This past Sunday was the 8 mile run for ALS. I completed it without walking. Going into it, my longer runs (4-5 miles) had been in the 10-minute-mile pace. So provided I could keep that pace up for the full 8 miles I was on track to complete the race in about 1:20. However, I questioned my ability to maintain that pace for 3 MORE miles than those longer runs. Long story short, going into this I was hoping to complete the race in the 1:25-1:30 range.
I finished the race in 1:15:57. Almost 5 minutes better than my best case scenario. I was stunned. And that was with a lot of leg problems during the race. My knees were killing me which was completely unexpected as they'd not bothered me in ages. Between miles 2-5 I was really questioning if I was going to be able to run the whole thing.
So the day was a great success for me and for ALS fundraising. I can't wait for next years. Shooting for 1:05 next year. And I'm glad, so glad I only have to do this once per year! HAHA!
