My good days, my bad days, my random thoughts

I'm trying to start running regularly again lately. I bet if you set goals and keep up with regular running it shouldn't be too hard to get to 4 milers after awhile. Running is fun like that, because it constantly challenges you with speed and distance, and your body begins to crave it after awhile. Happy to hear your extra weight is coming off again. I need to weigh myself tomorrow or friday and see if this hard work I've been doing this week is paying off or not.

I gain 8 pounds over the last couple of weeks. :( 193. Diet issues. How many calories are you taking in now? You dont love running yet? ;)

I had some diet issues myself. Just not as strict as I should've been and an increase in situations with no good food options. But over the month that I was increasing calories I ended up down in bf% which is good... though it was steady/slightly increasing in the last couple weeks.

So I've knocked about 500 calories off my daily intake for now. Shooting for 2400-2500 calories. I figure if I'm running every day (1 rest day/week) then I don't want to cut back too much. And no... no love for the running yet.

Paula, keep trying. I find I hate it less when I'm actually out there running. I don't enjoy it, but actually running sucks less than thinking about running. That's what I've found. It's a start.

Sam, you're right. I do enjoy the challenge of it. It's the only thing that keeps me in the game, really. But I would PREFER to challenge myself in other ways. :D Regardless, I gotta do what I gotta do. 8 miles by September 7. Egad. Good luck with that weigh-in.

Angela, thanks for stopping in! Nice to hear from ya.

How much exercise are you doing a day? I cant go that high without gaining back a bit. I know I wouldnt be losing any. Im riding just about everyday now but I dont think it burns as much calories as I was at the gym.

I walk (with the dog) at least 20 minutes -- usually between 30-40 minutes when I get home from work. Then again in the evening I head back out and go for a run. Last week was 2 miles/night. Yesterday, I ran 3 miles. I'm going to try and add a mile/week from now until the day of the 8 mile run. The more I can run without stopping to walk the better.

As for weight, it's coming off like gangbusters since running and cutting my calories back. I averaged about 2600 calories/day and I'm down over three pounds last week and this morning's weigh-in was the first where I saw a number in the 22% bodyfat range.

I'm not sure how many calories I was burning at the gym. It'd depend on intensity I'm sure. I was losing much slower at the gym but I'd also bumped up my calories big time so that's two pretty different situations.

I may end up hitting my original 170 goal at this rate if I keep this up. We'll see.

On the weekend we went to a family reunion on my wife's side of the family and her grandmother (we hadn't seen her since last winter when I was at my highest) and she literally didn't recognize me. At all. That was pretty crazy. It was also the first time I've been shirtless in public in many, many years and not been completely horrified and embarrassed about it.

There's still a lot to go, but I'm starting to be comfortable in my body now. Starting... not quite there yet.

How far are you biking, Matt? Or how long?

Well when Im just going to work its about 8 miles round trip or about 40 mins total. When I go on a big ride I do about 20 to 25 miles. That will take me about 2 to 3 hours.

Congrats on the weight loss! The running sounds like it is coming along quite nicely. I know what you mean about the "thinking about the running" and actually doing it. True true. Sometimes I can stress myself out over running, lol. I gotta go run tonite....

I need to weigh myself again. I don't do it often enough. I'm thinking probably tomorrow sometime. I want to get another run or two in before I see how I'm doing.

That's awesome! I've still not managed to get my bike. Shit keeps coming up that requires what money I've set aside for the bike (and other stuff) so it's been in limbo. I would love to be able to take off on a couple hour bike trek.

BMac - We were in West Lorne, about a half hour from London.

Sam - I get so stressed over it, especially now that it's a daily thing. I keep trying to come up with excuses to miss the day's run... but I can never come up with an acceptable one. I can come up with one, but I'll know what I did.

You can quit and they won't care, but you'll always know...

I F'N LOVE that quote. It's a quote from my cousin's (a legally blind Ironman competitor) e-mail signature. But I also hate it because that's the quote that ALWAYS comes to mind when I start making excuses to get out of running... or the gym.

Speaking of running, I've bumped up to 3 miles/day. I started Sunday doing the 3 miles. Slow as molasses, but I'm doing it... no walking.

So the goal is 8 miles by Sunday, September 7. If I add a half mile every 3 days, resting 1 day/week between now and September 7, I will be up to 8 miles on exactly September 7. That'd be amazing to pull off and I'm going to give it a shot with the above quote in mind.

that is very cool that you still have the goal to run the 8 mile in Sept. That rocks that you bumped it up 3 miles a day. I'm impressed. I gave up jogging all together in favor of the gym. Maybe when it cools down I'll take it up again, but when it's 110 after the sun goes down, it's too hard

I like that quote as well. I think I'm going to remember that and say it to myself next time I don't feel like going to the gym. It's pretty true.

Great job on the 3 milers. Bumping it up a half a mile every three days is pretty hardcore, imo... I need to work myself back up to a full 3 miler most days of the week... I'm almost there ;) I have been pretty faithful for almost the past two weeks in doing a core routine at the gym every other day. It is making sure I'm there at least every other day...

I have this thing in my head, especially when I'm outside running, is that when I start the run I won't let myself walk until it's over. I will let myself slow down to the slowest jog ever but not walk... It's just me trying to push thru the pain/anxiety in my head.

Hey Fish, just poppin' in to say HI!! :seeya:I will definitely give it a try after I'm cleared by the doctor. I'm sure if I just started out with a run/walk program like you and I talked about a LONG time ago and slowly increased the running part, I would get to where I didn't mind it as much... believe it or not, I actually ran cross country my freshman year in high school so I MUST have it in me somewhere lol...

Hope you're having a great week Fish!

Hey there :)

Just wondering how all the running is going. I went last night and the night before. Last night I ran 3.1 miles and it felt great! I think I might go again tonite but I'm not completely sure. Thursdays are my Fridays, and who the hell wants to exercise on Friday night? ;)

-Sam

I haven't run as much as I'd like due to shitty weather but I've been getting out enough that I'm not upset about it. I'm dropping weight again and I'm in the upper 170's. Looks like I may end up seeing 170 after all.

Ran 4 miles and a bit the other day. That took me about 42 minutes. I've been averaging 10 minute miles and running it an intensity level that I can continue to breathe properly (in through the nose, out through the mouth).

My last run was getting late so I decided to go with a 2 mile run to do better than a 10 minute mile (seems I did better when I was running while still working out -- probably from all the extra calories to give me the energy). Ran the two miles with an 8:30 average mile. However, that really hurt my shins/legs that night and the next day.

So it looks like it's running for distance for the rest of the month. I'll just have to suck it up and accept that I'm a sea turtle out there.

I noticed today that FitDay changed their site. It looks nicer but I'm not much of a fan of it other than that. Adding custom food is asstastic and trying to find a custom food that isn't in the recent food list is atrocious. Very poor design as far as usability goes. Then again, maybe I'm an idiot and I've overlooked something-or-other.

I'm at about 10 minute miles too... They will get faster, I know that but for right now I think just getting the running in as much as I'm trying to do is good for me, and distance is good. Run run run!!!!

-Sam

I wish I could tell what my miles are. The tread mill at my gym has been broken for 4 months now. I just got a new membership to a new gym opening next week here in town. They are a chain so they will take better care of their stuff and then I can tell.
