my diary

Crunchie, that's funny. Actually my husband and I did this once - thought it would be real fun to go climb a small mountain, have picnic on top, and come back down. Well, I did not enjoy it either. I was miserable through out, climbing up and climbing down (boy is that hard on ancles). By the time we climbed up, I did not care for the view, no matter how gorgeous it was! So I learned my lesson, climbing is not for me, LOL. :)
It is a good exercise though... :)

Hiking might be an aquired fancy. I love it, but I think I worked up to it slowly and started with "nature walks". These walks just happened to go up progressively harder hills. Aah, if you don't like it, just do something else, you've got lots of possibilities.

Breakfast: banana, fruit and cereal bar
Lunch: brown baguette (half on low fat cheese & pickle half on tuna mayo), banana
Tea: baked potato, coleslaw
Supper: Go ahead apple bake bar
Snacks: fruit and cereal bar, Scottish oatcake, fruit juice
Exercise: mountain climb (2850’)
fizzy juice: none
Water: 2 glasses, 1 600ml bottle, 3 x 500ml bottle
Fruit and veg portions: 3

Didn't do well on the fruit and veg portions yesterday but think I excelled on exercise! I managed to climb a mountain not far away from me which falls about 150' short ofbeing a munro and that was my first climb ever so I was chuffed with that but it hurt a lot (still hurts today).

Anyway for my breakfast I had a banana and cereal bar and didn't eat again until we were half way up the mountain. We had bought mini baguettes, cut them in half and filled each side with different things. I had tuna & salad in one and cheese and pickle in the other. I had my tuna one half way up then at the top I had my cheese one along with a banana.

For tea once I'd got home I had a baked potato with coleslaw and then had a bath, I had planned on going swimming to loosen off but I had no car so that was out.

I confess I took an attack of the munchies at supper time and ate an apple bake bar along with a rough Scottish oatcake.

I'm going to wait until this coming Sunday to weigh myself as I've been obsessed with the scales recently.

I'll also add my favourite photos from the trip!

Just a quick question, Crunchie, what's a munro? I'm not sure if that's a slang across the ocean, or if it's an actual term, but either way, I'm confused!

Also, good job on going hiking TWICE now! So what if you didn't go swimming, I wouldn't want you to push yourself too hard and then hurting yourself :(

Beagle a munro is what we call any mountain over 3000 feet, those are the tallest in the UK but there are a fair few in Scotland with Ben Nevis being the biggest at 4,406ft. In comparison Ben Ledi is 2883ft so it falls short but is apparently quite steep and the path is a long one compared to some others. There are apparently easier mountains to climb which are munros.

Thanks, I was wondering about that too! Good job on the climb! The pictures are beautiful! Makes me want to move there! he-he-he. :)

Those views are breathtaking!!!! I love to hike but with 2 "wee ones" we don't get to do it all that often anymore. We put them both in backpacks last summer, but with the 5 year old at 42lbs...niether of us want to carry her!!!! She likes to hike but can only go so far and is DONE!
With views like that...I am thinking of adding Scotland to my European trip next year.....Guess my 5 year old better get working on her hiking skills ;) !Keep up the good work! You are doing incredible!!!!!

Breakfast: apple
Lunch: wholemeal pasta with home made sauce
Tea: tin of weight watchers tomato soup, 1 slice brown bread, slice goats cheese
Supper: banana, 1 spoonfuls of plain rice
Snacks: fruit juice, nectarine
Exercise: none (legs too sore after mountain climb)
fizzy juice: none
Water: 4 glasses, 1 x 500ml bottle
Fruit and veg portions: 7

Well I did a lot better on the fruit and veg portions today thankfully but should really try counting calories to see if I'm eating too much sometime.

My legs were a bit too sore to do much in the way of exercise today so I'll do a double gym and swim session tomorrow hopefully though I might have to take it easy.

Still unsure whether I should try talking up the hill walking. I certainly didn't enjoy the climb up or down and the 30mins or so we spent at the top wasn't really worth the effort for me I'm afraid. If it got any easier I'd try it but my friend is super fit and so doing easier hills would be a step back for him but doing easier hills would be the only way I'd get better at it.

I think the that you should only take up hill walking if you really think you will enjoy it. Other wise it just becomes a chore. Well done with the food you are doing soo well. Keep up the great work!!!

Well it's a bit like my running really, I don't enjoy that too much but I do try. I sort of decided that I' keep at it for a while and if I still didn't like it after so long then I'd just give up. The mountain I climbed yesterday was a bad one for a first climb but as I say I don't think my friend would be willing to do any easier ones and I don't want to go on my own.:(

This is just a thought, but if your friend tied small weights to his ankles (I think you can buy them specifically for the ankle), and then went on an easier hill, it would be good for both of you! Since it wouldn't seem easier for him because he'd have to work harder just to move his legs, and you'd be able to start at a pace that's much better suited for your experience and abilities.

I think Beagle has a good idea there. :)
The thing about experience is that your body was not used to climbing. You can train yourself by climbing stairs and walking with weights on your legs yourself, and then after a few weeks do the same mountain again. I bet it will be easier. Your body will get used to the new type of exercise, and it will be able to do it better, so you may enjoy it after all. Just prepair yourself a bit better before the next climb. Walking uphill takes different kind of muscle then just walking or jogging on level surface, or swimming for that matter. Good luck, I think you can do it!

Well someone on another forum suggested I used the X-trainer and step machine a bit more at the gym (I tend to avoid them like the plague).:)

I like the sound of tying weights to my friends ankles but the temptation to drop him in a loch might be too much.:D Mind you he's struggling a bit with his own weight loss just now. He's still well within his BMI index probably but you can see the beginnings of a beer gut and a perfect set of man-boobs in a few of the photos I took yesterday. He's claiming that the weight I'm loosing is going onto him!

he-he-he... That's too funny! Yeah, even men have to be careful nowadays of how they eat and drink, as modern world we just don't get enough exercise.

Crunchie, good job on the exercise! Personally, I love to climb and hike and what beautiful views you have there!! I am SO jealous! :D You are doing wonderful! :D Keep it up :D

You almost made tea come out my nose I was laughing so hard at that. I'm voting for the extra weights on your friend too. Tell him it'll help him lose weight. I actually did that, but I attached 4 ankle weights to each other and then put it around my waist instead (20 pounds). I wore it all the time, including hiking, and it helped me lose weight last year without much calorie counting. I wore it hiking to train for my first trip to the Grand Canyon too. It really increased my endurance. I was surprised, but you feel so much faster and lighter when you finally take it off. I used to wear my "weight belt" from first thing in the morning until bedtime. The idea there is that you trick your body into thinking it's heavier than it is so your metabolism speeds up. It works, but the belt gets hot in the warmer weather. I didn't wear them on my limbs because it's not good for your joints to use weights on your extremities unless you're only doing isolated controlled movements. Too much chance for soft tissue damage. Hiking with ankle weights shouldn't be bad though, running would be but walking uphill is a pretty controlled movement in itself. He may want to take them off for going downhill though. See if he'll go for it. Tell him it'll burn off his love handles (do you call that side of the beer gut fat "love handles" there too? Some Americanisms leave my friends from other countries mystified).

Hmm I'm quite sure that unless he puts his mind to it he'll be in Marks and Spencers getting fitted for a bra soon enough.:D Unfortunately Ozzy is one of those really annoying people who, when they put their mind to it, can loose as much weight as they like. His problem is that he's a driving instructor so is stuck in his car all day and doesn't get his main meal til around 9.30pm most days.

Tell him it'll burn off his love handles (do you call that side of the beer gut fat "love handles" there too?

Yeah we do call them that here too! :D

Today I'm going to be struggling to get my lunch in as I have to go up town as soon as I get back from work at 1.30pm. By the time I get back from the town I may as well have an early main meal as I'll be going to the gym (with all the machines set to minimal resistance) and swimming tonight! Need to plan what I'm going to make for eating at my party tommorrow night too, the only idea I have just now is to make a big bowl of fresh fruit salad. :) Will definately need to tell my friends to keep the crisps well away from me but I'm thinking of buying flavours I don't like so I'm not tempted by them. I think I can have 1 or 2 slices of pizza surely to God!

Breakfast: banana
Lunch: none
Tea: home made chicken & veg curry with brown rice
Supper: apple
Snacks: fruit juice
Exercise: 1 hour 10mins pool session (64 lengths)
fizzy juice: none
Water: 5 glasses, 1 x 500ml bottle
Fruit and veg portions: 4

As predicted I did not get my lunch in! I also missed my gym session tonight due to not getting enough work done for my party tomorrow. The whole house basically needed a clean up and I only had time left for a swim. I had to take my swimming a bit slower due to my legs still hurting from Wed but I still managed the 64 lengths so I've swum 2 miles this week.
