My Big Fat Journal

Pineola, if you can't find bulgar in your stores, look online. It's great stuff!

I know what you mean about money spent at the store. When I was scrimping to raise all the kids on my own, I'd spend $50 a week for the five of us. Now that it's just me and my sweetie, I usually spend $60-90 a week, and I ALWAYS get home and say, "Hey, wait--what did I buy?!" I wonder if we are feeling deprived so we make more expensive choices?

ANYWAY, enjoy all that good healthy food this week, and please post your menus. I need ideas :p

: Morning Pineola, thought I'd answer the .xls question here. Me personally, I only add what I do on the treadmill to my exercise field. Only because me treadmill has all those neat controls and give me an exact number as to calories burned. Although I'm sure I'm burning alot more calories during the day doing other activities, I only calculate for the treadmill stuff.

The only time I added any extra was the dancing at the wedding and that was mainly because I was trying to make myself feel better about all the cheese I ate.

Thanks everyone.

Silver, I don't plan meals per-se, but I take a day during the week to pre-make things that I can have for meals. This is what I have done this week.

I made a variation of the SW Black Bean and Corn Salad that someone was kind enough to give me the link to.

I am making a batch of Spicy Szechwan Eggplant (also a recipe from another member) to keep in the fridge as well.

I plan to make the Taboulleh if I can, but it may have to wait until another time as Mal may need to send me the bulgur if I can't find it.

Along with these items I have boneless, skinless chicken marinating in a ginger teriyaki blend right now. I will grill that up today and keep in the fridge. I also purchased some Orange Roughy which I normally broil w/different kinds of spices depending on my side dishes. I will grill steaks today for dinner as well and any left over I will cut up and put in a salad at some point.

I have been keeping the basics of a salad in the fridge as well so I can add tomatoes, cukes and whatever as I go. I also have some melon cut up and ready to go.

I figure I can eat the eggplant as side dish or add rice for main dish as some point. The fish will be good with the SW Corn & Black Bean salad. I can also add the SW salad to greens with the steak as I think that would be good.

As you can see I just wing it for the most part, but I have a basic plan of just having things available to me that are quick to stop me from eating out or having Kraft Macaroni and Cheese :)

Scarlett, I think I do find it easier to justify buying more expensive things at the store. In addition to that, the sales are usually on pre-packaged items and I don't buy as many of those things anymore.

Mmmmm ... tabouleh! Emmcookie makes the BEST hummus in history. Totally spoils it for me because I can no longer get it anywhere else. Just not the same.

Pineola, DON'T TAKE CHANCES WITH YOUR BACK!! Mine is finally starting to heal and I actually have pain-free moments for the first time in roughly 7 months. You want to give yourself time to heal. It's worth it in the long run.

Have fun cooking up all the recipes that people are sharing!

Lol @ "very frisky food network thread"! :D

That's a good idea about making things for meals ahead of time. I really need to find me some good meal ideas to do that. But then again, I have a full time "cook." Lol! (My hubby. ;) )

Thanks for the warning on the back, Sillygirl. I will take it easy, but I didn't do to well on my calories yesterday so I am really anxious to workout as I don't want to have a zero loss or a gain even on the FSD. I have been so tempted to weight myself today which is totally out of character for me. I did not own a scale for years. I'm starting to get worried.

All this talk about Margaritas and guess what my friends shows up at my house with last eve. All the makings for Top Shelf Margaritas. I'm afraid I had two rather large ones and I didn't make them so I can only guess at the calories, but I am calculating around 680 calories. That would not have been so bad as I got up late so breakfast was really lunch. If I would have had a salad for dinner I would have been good to go, but alas we grilled steaks so I had steak, asparagus and SW black bean corn salad. Now if I would have stopped there I still would have been OK, not more than the 1700 I am not to exceed. I then ate extra steak when putting the food away. After dinner I had a small handful of small cherries and a detour bar. This put me at about 2200. This is the 2nd day I went over 1700 since my last weigh in. I really wanted to keep it around 1500 for the rest of the week to make up for last Friday. If I don't loose weight I'm going to kick my own ass!

L-jay where were you when I was shoving that steak in my mouth?

OK, so I am trying to figure out patterns. If I look back, the last time I overate like that was the Friday before last. What do the days have in common? I drank alcohol. Does it give me the munchies or do I just go off guard? Very interesting. I have to go work in the yard. I just wanted to drop by to confess :(

Still looking for the wheat, Mal. I think I know where I can get it now, but I ran short on time today. I'll go tomorrow at lunch.

Well, I can tell you that alcohol makes me eat like a pig. Shortly after I've consumed and then the whole next day. I am ravenous...it's totally ridiculous. That's why I've just had to give it up altogether. It just makes me eat too much.

I've heard other people say that they can't eat anything when they drink. And I just really want to slap those people (no offense to anyone here) :)

I wonder what it is? I tend to think it is the high. Alcohol makes you just not give a crap, I think. I think that is why so many people drink and drive. Once they get drunk, they don't care. They get that "It won't happen to me" syndrome. Then again, some might say it is the sugar.

I don't know....good thing I don't drink all that much anymore anyway.

So far today, still a little high in the calories. I think I am eating too much meat. When I look at my food the bulk of the calories is from meat. I had chicken w/lunch, jerky for a snack and Steak in my salad at dinner. I am a few calories over 1700 today. I can live with that. Tomorrow I have to think vegetables, vegetables, vegetables.

Not much exercise today unless you count playing catch and a little yard work. Paul is trying to teach me how to pitch a baseball. Man, I don't remember my hand ever getting sore from catching. I need a pad or something inside my glove. I'm getting so old!! I'm going to wait one more day before I go to the gym. My back felt fine today for the most part, but I don't want to lift any weights.

Oh, well...I'm done eating for the day!

I had to come back and do a P.S. The downstairs in my house is completely clean and organized with the exception of my front porch--I still need to give it a good scrub and clean the windows. Starting tomorrow the upstairs. I won't even start to tell you how bad it is up there. I have a room that is the "catch all"--I don't venture in very far. It will be interesting.

Pineola I can sympathize. My 3 goals for the next two weeks are to continue on my diet, get some writing I need done, and clean this place inside out.

I can't start cleaning until I go home, and I'm not going home until almost time for classes to start. THEN, of course, classes will be started, so I won't have much time to clean.... Eventually, I suppose, my kids will get together, send me and hubby on a nice cruise and clean the "future antiques" out of the house. Either that or, as hubby constantly threatens me with, the house will just cave in on itself. Either way, I don't have to clean :)

Pineola, have you ever had your blood glucose checked? Long before I was diagnosed with diabetes, I gave up alcohol because it had such strange results. I'd eat everything in the house, sleep all afternoon and be big-time depressed the next day, all from just ONE glass of wine. Now the doc tells me it was all because my body was not processing the alcohol properly. Maybe your situation is similiar? Have you tried eating something high fiber with drinks? (Fiber can even out alcohol's impact on your blood sugar.)

Take things slow and easy at the gym tomorrow, but have fun :)

Hi, Pineola! Just stopping by to see how your week is going. Please take it easy at the gym. I have a bad back also, so I have to be really careful how I lift and even how I get up from the floor. But it can be done if you are just careful and take it slow and easy for awhile.

I'm one of those persons who tends to not eat when I drink alcohol. However ... I don't like alcohol too much, so I don't drink all that often. I guess I'd rather eat than drink! :D

Have a great week!

Ah, yes, our old friend alcohol. It increases the appetite and decreases our will power ;) . I am exactly the same, also if I 'over do' it, I don't get headaches, I just feel queasy the next day, and eating makes me feel better. I may have a few drinks on Saturday, so I will have to see what happens .....

Good Luck with the drinking Mrs. Bear. I never really put drinking and eating together.....I guess I never put a lot of things together. I am coming to a lot of realizations lately.

I have not offically had my blood sugar tested in quite some time. My boyfriend is a diabetic and I have used his tester just out of curiosity. It was on the high end of normal. It could have changed since then. Thanks for the tip.

I am going to do a work out tonight, but just at home and with really light weights. I also have a 15min cardio dvd that I thought I would try. I hope it is not lame. My calories today are OK. Almost exactly 1700. I'm very curious to see if I lost weight this week as I have been over 2 days and right at the limit the rest of the days so far. I have also had very little exercise. The weeks not over yet! I could burn up a 1000 calories over the weekend at the gym (highly unlikely, but never the less possible).

I am also very interested in those Turbo Jam DVD's that Nrthrnmomof3 used? I am wondering if they are too difficult for me right now....I guess I could ask her opinion.

I joined the Biggest Loser type challange that starts on Monday. I'm looking forward to that. I was also going to have my boyfriend take a before pic so I can track my results visually. I thought that may be helpful.

Thanks for the support eveyone!

I'm sure I read somewhere that alcohol gives you a false appetite so I wouldn't worry too much about that. My aunt says that the term "beer-belly" should be replaced with "kebab-belly-as-result-of-beer" heh. I'm not sure of the time difference between where you are and where I am but did you weigh in today at all, if so how did you do?

Hope you have a great weekend anyway!

*wiggles thumb back and forth* As a fellow diabetic, I greatly urge you to do a proper blood test if the one you did on the tester is quite high so you can get a better and more accurate results.

and well... it's good to eat a lil food when you drink. it slows down ur body's absorption of the alcohol into the system. that being said though... when u're drinking, it's usually a social event and eating is a social event. people let down their guard due to the alcohol but also because they're having fun. and eating is fun. heh. :D

That is a good idea about having your bf take a pic of you before the challenge- I think I'll do the same thing. It's hard to see a difference just looking in the mirror, but a picture will definitely help.

How did the cardio dvd go?

I had a theory once: alcohol "absorbs" food, hence lining stomachs. So after I ate a whole pizza to myself, I threw several shots of vodka down my throat mixed with coke to absorb the pizza. The equvilent of 9 shots later, I go out to pub with friends. I order a bitch drink, and halfway through, I feel sick as a dog. Thankfully, I wasn't ill that night, but goodness I've never felt so awful.

The incident put me off drinking, especially since I was going through a very rough patch and I didn't like the associations of drinking while depressed.

Drinking on an empty stomach does make the alcohol go to your head quicker, so the old "line your stomach" thing does work. One of my friends balances out alcohol drinking with lots of water, it helps to reduce hangovers.

The challange sounds great, and having before and after pictures will really help to show the difference. Watching your day-to-day self doesn't always show the results, but a few weeks from now, you'll be able to see the difference.

Well done again with the weight loss; it may not be as much as you'd wanted, but it's still something.

Oh boy - alcohol and food is a deadly combination for me! I snack and snack - but now, I just make a choice, do I want the alcohol (if so - that's what I stick to) or do I want some of the food.

I, um...can't make that decision very well AFTER the 3rd drink ;)

Hope you're day is going well!
