My Big Fat Journal

^^ what they said ^^
Don't procrastinate... don't say well i already fell so i might as well enjoy it... get yourself back into gear and keep going...

You CAN do it :)

ouch. 4400 is a bit high... but it's just one day like everyone said. don't let it get you down. this is just more of a reason to be super good tomorrow right? :)

okay, it sounds like you've had your fun. Time to get serious again. You're allowed to have fun, just not too much too often. Or if you need more try for the non-food related kind;)

It is so easy to rack up a large number of calories when you eat high fat stuff, but remember, it is only because you are counting calories that it seems so bad. People who maintain their weight at a reasonable level have meals out. They have celebration meals and the occasional pig out I'm sure. But it doesn't affect their weight. I heard somewhere that your body can only store a certain amount of calories as fat each day,so if you ate 6000 calories one day, you would not necessarily put on 1lb of fat. Maybe someone could confirm or deny this, I'd be interested to know.

Oh, and Mal, I have the Nigella Bites cook book, and it has some reeeeeaaally nice recipes in it, worst luck :p . Potato gratin made with a pint of double cream, double chocolate fudge cake that I made for my birthday, etc, etc (I shalln't go one, I think I'm just making us all hungry :D ). She has a saying 'Its full fat or nothing'!!!! Sometimes I wish I couldn't cook or bake. Maybe I'll have to try some healthier alternatives. ;)

Jeezo now I know why one is advised not to eat out too often!:eek:

Don't worry too much about it though, one cheat day certainly won't hurt once in a while. Hope the food tasted good enough to be able to cheat a bit over heh!:D

Yeah, but Pineola you have to treat this also as a learning experience. You are educating yourself about the caloric values in food. And what better way to do it than have a day like that that makes you go aaaaaaaahhhhhhhhh. Because the next time you go out for Mexican you're really going to consider that menu and carefully choose what fits in your budget before ordering. So don't treat this so much as a negative experience....you are learning and knowledge is power.

Kind of like that time I figured out there were somethiing like 1800 calories in a Texas Jumbo Margarita and I had just drunk three.....in addition to my meal. :eek: :eek: :eek:

Yeah, don't worry about the meal. Even though it was pretty high in calories, it was good, right? Anyways you'll be back on track in no time. Just keep on doing as good as you have been!

Oh, my gosh, Scarlett! How big are those Margaritas? Please tell me they are gigantic because I love a good Margarita. I am hoping the old saying "Everything is bigger in Texas" holds true.

Speaking of Nigella....I have often wondered how she stays so slim. She makes the most outrageous stuff. I'll tell you what, I saw her make a ham in coke once and I have not made one since any other way. Cooking a ham in coke....could there be any other food worse for you on the planet? Well...other than a deep fried candy bar. Iye, Iye, Iye!

Saturday went well. I kept it to aprox 1600 calories. We were planning on taking a day trip, but while I was getting ready I sneezed really, really hard. So hard I did something to my back. We headed up the lakeshore, but were only gone a few hours because my boyfriends convinced me I needed to go lay down. My muscles in my back were all contracted and I felt crooked. Every time I sat down I would have spasms for a minute until I did some deep breathing and stopped them. I was disappointed, but feeling much better today so not so worried. I was afraid that it would drag out and I would not be able to exercise this week. I already have not been doing enough. If I was not able to do it at all I would have been upset.

Here is the good part. We went out to dinner. I had Prime Rib. I filled up on salad and a little coleslaw before the meal came. I then ate half the meat and 1/2 the mashed potatoes and totally did not touch the French bread. I brought the leftovers home. I'm so proud of myself. According to my weight loss goals I need to stay between 1500 & 1700 calories per day so I did great.

Still feeling very unorganized though and on edge about that. I plan to spend a good part of today getting things in order. I tackled that small bathroom and have not spent anytime since doing so as I have been spending most of my spare time on this forum getting strength from all of you.

I also need to do some grocery shopping and get my veggies cut up etc...for the week so I am off to look at recipes.

Did anyone see that post that was from some Muslim extremist group? I think it has been removed since, but it was very strange.

Great going Pineola, it is always difficult to be sensible when you are eating out. And it is so annoying when you have good intentions and something out of the blue, like straining your back, happens.

On the subject of Nigella, she hasn't always been 'slim'. She strikes me as the type of person that eats really nice food, sometimes it is healthy and sometimes it is very naughty, and she has always had nice curves and a bit of extra 'meat' on her. And my husband finds her very attractive!!! I think a lot of men do. I reckon that more men fancy her than fancy Kate Moss, its the difference between what men find attractive and what women think is attractive.

My dear woman, I think you got something wrong.. Being on a diet for us comfort eaters isn't all about losing weight.. You have to be satisfied from what you eat. The way it looks and smells, contributes to how fulfilling it is. I think it's ok to have a tortilla or nachos, for it's not WHAT you have.. It's HOW you have them.. Use wholemeal tortillas and low fat cheese, go vegetarian on it. Roast all your veggies in organic virgin olive oil. Fatten it up with lettuce. And then you'll see how satisfied you’ll be.

I am that much of a foodie I became a chef. And you know what mess THAT can be when your speciality is cakes..

But I realised later rather than sooner (luck is on women’s side :rolleyes: ) that what I need is keep what I like but make it myself. Swap this with that. Even when I buy things I opt for organic nuts say instead of cheerios..:D

I believe you need more colour and flavour .. that way you won't cheat ;)

Xxx

I'll ditto Mrs Bear! My partner thinks that Nigella is so hot he woke up confessing he was dreaming or her naked all night after he saw me reading her book.. Hmmm.. Men like saucy ladies :p

Its funny how it doesn't seem as bad as if our men say they fancy someone who is super slim, its almost like, wow .... he fancies a REAL woman with a REAL woman's body.

And thank you for your slant on cooking. It makes so much sense. I think I might have to try and mix up my meals a bit, as I do eat similar things a lot of the time and I guess I do get a bit bored. I love cooking and baking, and I guess I just have to look at healthier recipes, because I think they can be just as nice. I must check out the recipes section of this website, I can't believe I haven't yet!!

So reading about your 4400 calorie day made me think about something... can you imagine if we all tracked our calories back when we used to eat that way every day? Ew... I am morbidly curious to look up some of the stuff I used to eat- but I think it would make me ill.

Anyway- I'm glad to hear you're back on track with those 1600 calorie days. Keep up the good work!

Good Lord! For one thing I would never even think of surviving the shock of finding out. You better sit before reading this..

My average day was made of an entire 8 slice veggie pizza with stuffed crust, 500g of salt and vinegar crisps, 2 sandwiches with mozzarella tomato and cucumber and a salad. About 2-3 diet cokes and the only good thing 3 litters of water..:eek:
Another average day was 500g of tortellini with Napolitano sauce and 5-8 bars of chocolates. Coke and water not included..

Do we really want to go back there?
I think not :rolleyes:

~~~~
Mrs Bear, I think you and I would be disastrously best friends in the kitchen :p
I don't think you need to do anything to your cookbooks just yet. What I do is substitute this ingredient with another..
For example.. A very healthy dessert is my milk fake.
I use Soya milk for the cream, diet crackers for the topping and canderel for the sugar coat!
My favourite is apple pie! I make a light crêpe with sunflower oil, which I don't fry. I make it in a non stick pan. I put apple in the middle that I heat up as much as desired in the microwave or bake in the oven with canderel and cinnamon and voila!
You can make the naughtiest deserts with practically no calories..
Give it a go. :)
I will definitely give that a go! I don't eat wheat so the crepe sounds like a great idea because I can use wheat-free flour. I have the hardest time with wheat-free pastry :rolleyes: .
Also, I have decided what to do when I make desserts, etc for family get-togethers. Because I make them myself, I can work out on my calorie counting website how many calories are in a slice, and count everything else as well, then work backwards for the day to make sure I have a suitable amount of cals. It will also make me think twice about the volumes I am eating as well.
PS - I told my hubby about our chat re Nigella, and now he has started pointing out to me all the non-skinny women that he fancies ..... hmmm ..... I didn't think that one through, did I :D .
Hey Pineola, about the Texas Jumbo Margarita, I think it came in a 22 oz glass but I think what made it so high octane was that they used Cuervo Gold plus a shot of Grand Marnier. They are good but if I drank one now I think it would be like drinking kerosene. I'd probably be able to light myself on fire.
Have you been able to use the spreadsheet?
good for you Pineola. that's a good idea actually cause restaurants actually serve double the recommended servings by nutritionist.
Well, you ladies have turned my journal into a very frisky Food Network thread. I take it you are somewhat neighbors as you seem to speak the same language. I had to look up Canderel to see what it was :) Please give me more details on how to make that crepe. I want one. I also would like to be advised of a low fat cheese that taste good as I can't seem to find one.
Scarlett, thanks for stopping by. I have just noted about .xls in your diary. I think they call that a "Top Shelf Margarita" around these parts, but we usually complain about how small they are as they are a bit expensive at most places. I have been a light weight myself when it comes to drinking anymore. I find I just want to lay down when I get intoxicated, so I don't really bother anymore unless I am somewhere exciting that is going to keep me awake like on vacation or something. Even then it only takes a few. I do love a glass of red wine now and again though just to warm me up.
Val, I don't even want to think about how many calories I would eat on a daily basis. It would freak me out. I really am not a big junk food junkie either. I don't go to fast food much and I am not a big chip eater, but I love buttery, creamy, fatty foods and ate way to much of them. I hope I can keep this way of eating up for good. Today I felt like I was eating way too much and was very nervous to add it all up, but it ended up to be under 1500 calories and I am really satisfied at the end of the day....I feel full even. The good days seem to come more naturally. I did make the mistake of going to the grocery hungry tonight. I spent 170.00! I didn't by anything bad except some sourdough bread and actually, now that I think about it I purchased about 25.00 in perennials and 40.00 on household items so 105.00 on food. Still I feel like I didn't get that much. Spices were on sale so I stocked up on those. It is expensive to eat well.
Thanks for all the encouragement everyone. L-jay, Thanks for being so strict!
My back is feeling better today, but I did not exercise as I feel a little bit weak or sore, not really sure. I thought I better give it another day to rest. I was going to take an easy walk, but the we had some thunderstorms come through and there were tornado warnings in a nearby county so I thought I better not drag the dog out to far from the house just in case. I am hoping that the gym is open tomorrow as I am off for the holiday.
I went tonight to buy the groceries for the week. I have found numerous recipes on this site that I am going to try. I could not find any bulgur in my local groceries and I needed it for the taboullah I am going to make. Malfeasant listed it and it sounded really, really yummy.
I am feeling like I need a change in my job. This has been causing me a bit of anxiety, but luckily I am not eating compulsively at all. I sort of ate on the run and standing around for the most part today as I was really busy, but as I said before I did not exceed my allotted calories.
Ok, enough for now....Thanks for stopping by everyone.
If your grocery store doesn't have a section for grains and stuff (red mill I think is nation wide) check the rice section and look at the Near East products- they make couscous and other fancy rices -- they also make a taboulleh mix- which is really just bulgur in a box - adou have to add all the other ingredients...
(If not i'll throw some in a ziplock bag and mail it to you... :D -- seriously i will :D
Heya Pineola! :)
2 large eggs
3/4 cup milk
1/2 cup water
1 cup flour
3 tablespoons melted butter
Butter, for coating the pan
The above is the basic recipe for a crepe. Instead of that I use this:
2 large eggs (or Soya egg replacement if concerned for your cholesterol)
3/4 cup milk (semi-skimmed or Soya)
1/2 cup water
1 cup flour (any type is ok since the calorie difference isn't significant)
3 tablespoons melted butter (sunflower oil!! or you can make your own butter*)
2 drops (literally) of sunflower oil, for coating the pan
You can make butter by putting some milk cream in a jam jar and shake it till it becomes butter. From there on, you add your salt (or LO SALT even better) and/ or herbs if u desire and mix it in.
I always use Soya milk where milk is needed because when you buy full fat Soya it has the same calories etc a skimmed cows milk has plus it's a LOT healthier since it reduces cholesterol, boosts cancer protection and hasn't got what cows milk have -hormones and cow pee- :)
Also, if you like mush you can boil your potato, mush it and then instead of butter you can add either milk or mayonnaise to make it lighter.
Hope that helped!:D
