Mowens's Diary

As usual, my wife did all the hard labor setting up tables and chairs and I did the cooking and drew the flowers.

Do you two share tampons? You know, you and your wife?

Nah, just kidding. I do all the cooking around here myself. Plus, I have very feminine tendencies when it comes to discussing home decor and any type of decoration. However, I'm a horrid drawer so Jen handles all the artistic stuff.

Question though - what is she eating in the second picture? I'm hoping it's cake of some sort but it looks like a Granny Smith apple coated in guacamole.

Yeah, we've got the gender norms completely swapped. I'm more likely to cook dinner and do the artsy-crafty stuff and she's more likely to mow the lawn and assemble new furniture/appliances. But hey, it works for us.

what is she eating in the second picture?

I was wondering if someone would ask because it's kinda weird looking in the photo. It's just a cupcake with green icing and sprinkles. We got her a cake with a dozen small cupcakes around it because in Alice in Wonderland she eats cake to grow. I dunno, we thought it was a cute concept in conjunction with it being her first birthday.

It feels worse because Clinton won the popular vote. She received more votes and still loses. It doesn't feel very democratic to me.

One of the definitions of a democracy is "control of an organization or group by the majority of its members". If a majority is against a candidate and they still win, to me, that is not very democratic.

And yes, I know what the electoral college is and how it works, it just seems like a broken system to me. I don't feel as though my vote counts and I'm willing to bet a lot of the country feels the same way.

And if anyone here supports Trump, that's fine. He just doesn't represent any of the qualities or morals I hold dear or wish to instill in my children.

It seems to me Mike that the system is at fault. It must be. I think we have got to know one another well enough in this forum & know that his "values" & "morals" or lack of, are not a reflection of our forum friends morals & values. The voting system sucks & surely must be changed.
I think it's a good time for us all to reflect on what is really important to each of us & concentrate on nurturing our special relationships. Our younger son said this on FB yesterday-
"We live in such an unnatural state of "connection." It's meant to bring us together but, in truth, it divides us. We know in the same minute that there is a bombing in a far away western country. But people sit opposite their partners having lunch not even truly appreciating that moment they are in. The beauty of the immediate environment in front of you that is your life. What's going on in America right now has no direct impact on the way you live your life. The people who make it what it is & the choices you make daily are your life. I choose not to over invest in things that don't directly impact my life. Because I think what's even more horrible than having Hilary or Donald in power is allowing that to affect the day that you're living- actually living. Let corporate America select its' next puppet. I feel for the people of this country who are being let down so much by the people employed to serve them. But it won't change the fact that I'm laying in my hammock on a beautifully sunny day in the paradise we call Tasmania. Because that's my world & it's a beautiful one. Enjoy your day.

I have a 4 day weekend since tomorrow is Veteran's Day here in America so I probably won't be around for a few days.

I'm trying to focus harder on my diet with Thanksgiving just 2 weeks away. It's going to take a strong will not to devour a ton of food. Our family always makes deviled eggs and monkey bread and they're both favorites of mine.

See you folks around. ;)

Just got up, read the news. I can't even put into words how I feel. Hatred and fear have won. I'm so ashamed to be an American today.
I felt that way, too. My wife's family is from upstate NY, and is very predominantly Republican, she feels very sad and disconnected from her side of the family right now.

I don't know what monkey bread is, but I like almost* all kinds of bread, so there's a strong likelihood that I'd like that one.

*corn bread and our local Italian bakery's Italian bread are the two I don't like.

I'm the odd one out then. I had looked up monkey bread when you 1st mentioned it & decided I had better not say anything, but I will now say I think it looks gross :blush5: Eaten for breakfast?

Haha, that's fine cate. To each their own. I can only eat a tiny bit of it at a time because it's so sweet, but I go for sweets and fruity flavored stuff but can't stand anything chocolate. I had to look up the Wikipedia entry to see that it says it's almost exclusive to the United States and unknown virtually everywhere else. :p It's funny to me how certain foods are so regionally specific. You and LaMa and a few others mention foods almost daily that I've never heard of or at least don't have access to.

And I dunno what time of day most people eat it but my mom used to always cook a giant Christmas breakfast with bacon, sausage, biscuits and gravy, egg casserole, grits and for "breakfast dessert" we'd have the monkey bread.

I'm sure we ate more than our daily allotment of calories in a single sitting, but it's pretty much the law to eat that unhealthy a few times a year or else you can't call yourself a southerner.

It is really funny how things vary so much from country to country. You have me wondering what foods I have talked about that are unfamiliar to you now. Let me know next time please :) Our "traditional" family breakfast, when I was growing up, was cold leg ham, poached eggs & toast, with a little bit of hot English mustard. I'm not much of a sweet tooth & I think that came from what we were brought up eating. So many of our friends are.

I like the sound of that Christmas breakfast! I love sweet stuff but I really don´t need it for a full meal. Pancakes, waffles, fruit yogurt, croissants or whatever don´t make me feel like I´ve actually had breakfast and can now be (physically) active until lunch.
