Mattie's Journey

This is my second journey down the "Weight Loss Road". When i was 19 i was diagnosed with a liver condition called "fatty liver" which was discovered when doing blood tests for insurance. I was told at that time that I needed to lose some weight to help the condition. I went from 254 pounds down to around 200 with diet and excercise over the course of a year.

I, of course, wasn't happy being at 200 even though everyone told me how great I looked and what a great accomplishment it was. It was around this time that I developed an eating disorder (yes, one of the rare males with an eating disorder...talk about feeling like an outcast) and dropped down to 180 in a very unhealthy way.

Weight has been a constant struggle ever since although I am happy to say that since i got married a little over a year ago I have been able to, for the most part, recover from the eating disorder that controlled my life for 3 or so years. I am now interested in getting back to a healthy weight in a healthy manner and thought that keeping a journal like this may help me on my way!

1. What is your current height and weight? - 6'1" 232 lbs.
2. If you were at an ideal weight now, what would that weight be? - 180 lbs.
3. At what weight would you like to be at four months from now? - 180 lbs.
4. Why do you want to lose weight? To feel better emotionally and physcially. I am a very active individual and the weight I have gained is not helping me out in that regard.
5. Do you want to lose weight for a specific life event such as wedding or reunion? If so, when is that event? No.
6. What obstacles could get between you and your weight loss goals? Binge eating that at times is almost uncontrollable.
7. Why do you think that you now have a weight problem? See above question.
8. What lifestyle changes do you think would help you lose weight? Getting back into my workout regiment should help immensely. That and cooking healtheir meals with the Wife's help at home.
9. Have you lost weight in the past? If so, what has worked in the past to help you lose weight? Yes - healthy diet (lots of chicken!) and excercing 2-3 times a day.
10. Why do you believe that you did not lose weight or you gained the weight back? After marriage i kind of got in a lull and it crept up on me.
11. What, if anything, has not worked for you in the past in helping you to lose weight? Why do you think it did not work? I can not do 'fad' diets.
12. Would you try writing down all food and drink consumed for a given period of time? I already do this - i use mynetdiary.com which is a great tool for me as long as I'm strict and follow it.
13. Do you cook at home often? If so, what do you cook? Every night - Lots of chicken dishes and soups.
14. How often do you go out to eat? Where do you go? Once a week - usually somewhere like Chile's or Panara Bread.
15. What are your three favorite foods? Cheeseburgers, brats, bacon.
16. What are your three favorite restaurants? Chile's, Arby's, Texas Roadhouse.
17. What are three things you can do differently when it comes to food? Control my urges to eat more than i know i need to.
18. If you woke up tomorrow and your body was exactly the way you want it, what would be different? Just a little less of me.
19. Do you eat when you are not hungry? Yes.
20. Do you binge eat (large amounts at a time)? Yes.
21. Do you hide your food or eat in secret? No.
22. Do you eat when you are sad, nervous, or depressed? Yes.
23. Do you eat as a reward? Yes.
24. Do you eat while watching TV or using the computer? Yes.
25. What do you normally eat for a meal? - Two chicken breasts, some rice or potatoes, and another vegetable.
26. What type of snacks do you eat? Anything and everything.
27. In terms of exercise, what, if anything, are you currently doing? I have a gym membership and a treadmill at home. I try to do 30 minutes of cardio at lunch at the gym close to work, and 30 minutes at home either at night or in the morning.
28. Where do you go for exercise? A local public gym? School/work gym? Home? Home and a local gym.
29. What, if anything, are your three favorite types of exercise? Lifting weights, Elliptical, Treadmill.
30. What is your daily/weekly/monthly/yearly motivation to move towards your goals? The numbers on the scale and the way I look in the mirror.
31. Do you have rewards for certain goals? No.

Morning Update
Woke up a little late this morning and did not have the opportunity to work out or eat breakfast unfortunately. Will try to hit the gym at lunch to make up.

Afternoon Update
Doing great so far today. For lunch I had two cans of Campbell's Select Harvest Soup (trying it for the first time - pretty good stuff) and went to the gym. Did 20 minutes of walking on the treadmill and 10 minutes on the elliptical.

Just had a bit of an afternoon snack - two handfulls of cheese popcorn, 3 caramel pieces, and a bag of skittles. Should get me through the afternoon!

Night Update
Got home from work and had dinner watching Scrubs as usual (greatest show ever!) For dinner i had:
- bowl of chicken/rice soup (Harry and David's - YUM)
- 1/2 chicken breast
- 5 lowfat string cheese pieces (50 calories each)
- bag of Homestyle popcorn

Reflection
All in all not a bad first day - especially considering the way i was eating beforehand. I came in at just over 2000 calories taken in and burned nearly 350 at the gym. A bit over my netdiary goal but still well on pace for my weight goals.

I really could have done without the bag of popcorn but I gave in. Mistakes are great learning tools, right?

It feels good to be back on a diet and progressing towards a goal - I believe this diary will play an important part in that.

Morning Update
Woke up much better this morning than yesterday so i decided to do 20 minutes on the treadmill and eat a nice breakfast. Had two pieces of bacon and an egg white. I have to go out to eat this lunch for a meeting at work so hopefully i can find a healthy choice that won't throw me off.

Afternoon Update
Had to go out to lunch with the guys from work. I had planned on having some Chili or a bowl of soup but I just couldn't resist the pulled pork sandwich with waffle fries - they have some of the best of both around.

I don't feel too bad about giving in as long as the rest of the day I keep it together. After work I'm thinking about stopping by the gym for a half hour or so.

Night Update
Had a bowl of soup, 5 chocolate covered pretzels, and 3 pieces of string cheese. Not a great day by any means but at least i didn't do anything drastic. I will be out of town for the weekend and will update upon my return.

hey Mattie,
Welcome to the site. This is a great place for knowledge and support. I think eating disorders in men are a lot more common than you think. It's just the they cant recognize it or dont want to admit it. They all think that, I'm not sticking my finger down my throat so i dont have a disorder but this is not the only type of eating disorder. Glad you recognized yours and wish you the best of luck with your journey.

Matt

I believe there are probably quite a few that experience disordered eating - unfortunately i was one of the them that did suffer from Bulimia. Not a pretty thing, i would call it a demon and basically takes control of your life.

Friday January 09 - Saturday January 10

I was out of town and it was not a great weekend by any means - this tends to happen when i go up north since it is so relaxing up there. This won't slow me down though.

Friday

Two pieces of bacon and one egg white for breakfast. Started the day good but it went downhill from there. Drove up north with my puppy to do some snowmobiling and for lunch/dinner i had a Jack's pizza and half a bag of popcorn chicken. I also snacked on 5 mini eskimo pies.

Saturday

Five small pieces of bacon and one egg white for breakfast. For lunch/dinner i had another pizza and four cheeseburgers. I also snacked on some more eskimo pies (2 or three). When i got home Saturday night i had two pulled turkey sandwiches and ten chocolate covered pretzels.

Sunday January 11

Morning Update

Two Johnsonville sausages and an egg white for breakfast. Planning on working out a bit during the football games. Also had a coffee.

Afternoon Update
Have not gotten any excercise in yet, but had a manageable afternoon. For lunch i had some chicken and rice soup with four saltines and a piece of string cheese. When my wife came home i finished off her burger king meal which consisted of one chicken finger and a handful of fries.

Night Update

Fended off the urge to go and get Papa Murphey's Pizza for dinner. Instead I made some fabulous brats (probably my favorite food). For dinner i had two brats (no buns) and some broccoli/cauliflower mix.

Reflection

Good day. My ratio of fat/carbs/protein was almost perfect. Also stayed under 2000 calories.

Morning Update

Two egg whites and two pieces of bacon for breakfast. Planning on a 2-soup lunch with a workout at lunch as well.

Afternoon Update

Two cans of soup for lunch - one before and one after working out. Went to the gym and was on the elliptical for 15 minutes. For a snack I had six hershey's miniatures and a bad of nuts.

Night Update

Two brats, a chicken breast, and some baked lays for dinner.

Overall not a great day but definately not a bad day. Combined with my excercise I managed to stay under 2000 calories while still having an off day.
