Marsia's Diary

Yay for smaller pants! The question is: did your belly come forward or did the rest shrink back?
:p That made me laugh. I want to invent something that does that!

Just woke up and lost .4 pounds from sticking with the program yesterday, so relieved that maybe a little of this will come off relatively painlessly. I have so much to do before vacation, so I'm hoping I can work it off quickly. See you later today!

I cleaned so hard I am sore all over. I feel like the property and house need about 4 people working on it full time for a month to get me caught up, and I am probably going at 1.5 person speed, so maybe I can burn off some fat and get a lot of stuff checked off the list before summer vacation. It feels really good though, and maybe having a really demanding house and yard will be my weight loss salvation in the end - hoping anyway! I cleaned under my mom's bed and other places you can't get to if you have bad knees while J took her to speech therapy, and could only do an hour it was so dusty, but if I keep at her house, it should be decent by the time we go for vacation. I took my skinny clothes out of the basement today and tomorrow I'll sort through them and start laundering them. I can't find our snorkel gear for Hawaii, but maybe have to wade through the garage. Can't wait for the year of decluttering to be over. I bet all this is going to take more than a year though. I have no idea how we got all this crap. I'll be so glad when it's all organized!

Ate well but did treat myself to a few spoonfuls of fake sugar in my tea as a reward for cleaning my mom's house. I wish my fitbit watch hadn't broken, it would be nice to see how many calories I am burning. Time to mark up my map of Kauai with all the places we plan to go!

Thanks LaMa! I feel pretty happy with how much I am getting done lately. I think this property is way more work than either of us expected, but it's so worth it to live where we do. When I think about my grandparents running a little subsistence farm, I don't do a fraction of the work they did a day, but for me this is good and I feel like I am getting a sense of accomplishment. It's really helped to have this diary and to have all this support!

It wouldn't be right if keeping a garden were the same as keeping a farm going, not even a small one! My parents have a huge garden with a large glasshouse and a whole lot of fruit and veg but they've been working on it for years and it looks like over time the choices you make determine whether your garden is going to take a bit of work or a shitton of it :) But getting everything going is always hard.

Thanks for the nice perspective! I think you are right about getting started being hard. I have to amend the heavy clay soil here for a lot of the plants and get all the invasive ground cover off the beds first, so it is very slow going. But it is nice and satisfying. I was exhausted after planting and mulching part of a bed today and moving some plants to another bed. I also moved 5 big boxes of my mom's books down to our house and cleaned them and got them nice for giving to the thrift store. They were so, so dusty, so I am sipping a hot lemon and salt drink now. Ugh. So just gardened and did laundry and took it easy in between today.

I can feel muscles in my legs and bum firming up. I weighed myself and the weight went up which usually happens after getting a lot of exercise. Maybe I retain water or something. But I am not worried because I did a lot of good exercise and good fasting.

Yup. Unaccustomed exercise - in kind or in amount - has a tendency to make your muscles retain more water.

I took it pretty easy today as I am sore and need a day of not digging. Made a yummy salad dressing with lots of fresh garlic and slightly hot pepper, got some good chores done, went to the thrift store with the books and some of my decluttered stuff and I am at a cafe waiting for my mom's physical therapy to be over. I may try making a keto pizza with a cauliflower crust in the next day or so. Sounds gross, but gets good reviews.

I feel really good getting so much exercise. Hope this becomes a permanent part of my life - it's very confidence building accomplishing things and taking care of myself all doing the same thing. It's nice having exercise that I don't have to do separately from chores!

Another nice thing has been going through my books and culling out things I know I will never read. It's like saying goodbye to old parts of me that are no longer relevant. I can see how much more myself I have become and less concerned about how others perceive me. Some books I am getting rid of are things I wanted to read to be well read, and I just don't have time to read for anyone but me, so bye bye to that idea. I am a rather simple person in a lot of ways and so many books I got rid of are ones that don't get right to the point of what they are trying to say. I just don't have the time or brain space to wade through other people's complex realities.

I´ve heard quite good things about cauli pizza and rather bad things. It probably depends on what you expect - and which exact recipe you use.

I'll be sure to pick a recipe with good ratings. I can imagine the bad recipes and how they come out!

I blew it last night and gave in to cravings for strawberry shortcake and made a keto short cake and had a big piece. I think I would have lost a little weight otherwise. But I am over the craving now. The short cake came out so great, but I will leave the rest for everyone else.

It's half way between a drizzle and heavy fog outside, so perfect for weeding and digging - want to get sun loving plants in today including a huge potted cactus, so I have to get a lot of sand for it. I hope I can get the cactus out of the pot without it getting me - it has huge spikes!

Hi Lama! I thought I would make a "before" pic. I've always wanted to do that! Today I put some big rocks on the border because where all the green on the left is is a big steep hill going down. I also dug up a lot of sand for planting cactus and mixed it with some potting soil. There used to be a wood chip pile here that decomposed, so I also rescued a lot of nice mulch that was falling down the hill and pulled a lot of wild berry bushes out. The bamboo sticks in the background of the pic are protecting some bulbs that haven't come up yet. The cats will dig them up otherwise. So tomorrow I get some really big rocks from the upper yard to finish the rock border and maybe some between cacti for decoration. I'll plant an herb garden between cacti for now because this is very close to the kitchen door, so convenient for having an herb bed. If there is room, I have some beautiful sage and bee balm bushes that could go there. I have some other little cactus for there and will pot some succulents to put there and bring in when it freezes.

Today started really lazy - it was cold and drizzly, so I didn't want to do much. But I got outside and got started on this bed and am happy. I ate the hugest salad because otherwise I was going to eat junk. I hope this helps me reset. I am writing a friend I mentioned before who dealt with alcoholism, and I just feel like we all deal with the topic of addiction in this society in one way or another - so much of capitalist society seems designed to get us hooked on things that aren't good for us. I hope gardening can replace a lot of anxiety eating! It is very satisfying and really helps calm me down and get me grounded!

That first cactus is so pretty! I love the combination of curves and spikiness.

That´s great. Everyone needs something to relax with and most people do well out in nature :)

Thanks LaMa! Like a lot of my garden, it's plants that were given away or rescued, so they aren't perfect specimen, but I just love nursing plants back to health. The big one was actually from the lady who lived here before us. The yellow striped agave plant on the far left will get gigantic and spread once I plant it, and should be great for contrast. It is from a humungous plant (way over your head) that grew in a park by the ocean and was later chopped down, so I have its baby and am happy because it was a gorgeous plant that I remember when I look at my little offshoot I rescued - it had been broken off and was nearly consumed by aphids, so I am really happy it came back to life. When I look at my garden, I think about where all my plant orphans came from and it makes me happy.

I did well yesterday with fasting and food. I think I will buy more avocados and have them in salads. I had absolutely no sugar cravings last night and the pollen outside is really bad. So I am going to be filling up on good fats.

Thanks! Pollen allergies are a pain!! I got dinner started late, so will break my fast and have a little, and just eat breakfast a lot later tomorrow. It's paleo meatloaf and green beans with onions and garlic, and I have been craving them all week. Got some big rocks moved today - one with J's help, and one rolled down the hill and was so hard to get back up! So good exercise! It's beautiful out now so I can go out and see where the sun ends for the cactus bed. Happy weekend!!

Green beans, onion, and garlic are all great :p I'll admit I'm not a big fan of meatloaf but throw in pinto beans instead and I'm all for it!

Yum pinto beans!!! I just went through the cupboard to put out food for a food drive and got rid of all the non-ketogenic foods except for the beans. It's just too hard to part with the beans!! My meatloaf is a lot better than in restaurants because I put in a lot of caramelized onions and garlic to make it moister and more flavorful, and a lot more spices. I don't like bland or dry meatloaf at all.

It's sunny and nice outside. Time to go forth and conquer!
