Tip: Don't eat chicken. Trust me, that shit is nasty unless it's free range, no pesticides, organic, etc....course I think even then it's still nasty, but I don't like chicken so don't listen to me!

Overcooking created bad carcinogens, I suggest you read about raw foodism for the hell of it, but read this for sure:

Cooking food at high temperatures, for example grilling or barbecuing meats, can lead to the formation of minute quantities of many potent carcinogens that are comparable to those found in cigarette smoke (i.e., benzopyrene). Charring of food resembles coking and tobacco pyrolysis, and produces similar carcinogens. There are several carcinogenic pyrolysis products, such as polynuclear aromatic hydrocarbons, which are converted by human enzymes into epoxides, which attach permanently to DNA. Pre-cooking meats in a microwave oven for 2-3 minutes before grilling shortens the time on the hot pan, and removes heterocyclic amine (HCA) precursors, which can help minimize the formation of these carcinogens.

Reports from the Food Standards Agency have found that the known animal carcinogen acrylamide is generated in fried or overheated carbohydrate foods (such as french fries and potato chips). Studies are underway at the FDA and European regulatory agencies to assess its potential risk to humans. The charred residue on barbecued meats has been identified as a carcinogen, along with many other tars.

Nevertheless, the fact that the food contains minute quantities does not necessarily mean that there is a significant hazard. The gastrointestinal tract sheds its outer layer continuously to protect itself from carcinomas, and has a high activity of detoxifying enzymes.

Also this:

Cooking food increases the risk of some of detrimental effects on food or health or both.

Cooking of vegetables and fruit containing vitamin c both elutes the vitamin into the cooking water and degrades the vitamin through oxidation. The reduction can be very significant with extended cooking.

Peeling vegetables can also substantially reduce the vitamin C content , especially in the case of potatoes where most vitamin C is in the skin.

Baking, grilling or broiling food , especially starchy foods, until a toasted crust is formed generates significant concentrations of acrylamide, a known carcinogen.

Cooking dairy products may reduce a protective effect against colon cancer. Researchers at the University of Toronto suggest that ingesting uncooked or unpasteurized dairy products (see also Raw milk) may reduce the risk of colon cancer. Mice and rats fed uncooked sucrose, casein, and beef tallow had one-third to one-fifth the incidence of microadenomas as the mice and rats fed the same ingredients cooked.

Several studies published since 1990 indicate that cooking muscle meat creates heterocyclic amines (HCAs), which are thought to increase cancer risk in humans. Researchers at the National Cancer Institute found that human subjects who ate beef rare or medium-rare had less than one third the risk of stomach cancer than those who ate beef medium-well or well-done. While eating muscle meat raw may be the only way to avoid HCAs fully, the National Cancer Institute states that cooking meat below 212 °F (100 °C) creates "negligible amounts" of HCAs. Also, microwaving meat before cooking may reduce HCAs by 90%. Nitrosamines, present in processed and cooked foods, have also been noted as being carcinogenic, being linked to colon cancer.

Also, toxic compounds called PAHs, or Polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons, present in processed, smoked and cooked foods, are known to be carcinogenic.German research in 2003 showed significant benefits in reducing breast cancer risk when large amounts of raw vegetable matter are included in the diet. The authors attribute some of this effect to heat-labile phytonutrients.

Heating sugars with proteins or fats can produce Advanced glycation end products ("glycotoxins").

Welcome back to the board...there are a few of us that were MIA and are back....as Val has said (in her diary, I think)...this is the year of the fierce!

Great Weekend

We left friday evening after work and headed north to spend Saturday skiing :) I had a blast. It's been 4 years since the last time I was on skis...but its like riding a bike, you never forget. I took skiing as a college course and LOVED IT. It's also a great work out for the legs :) I had one little fall...and it was more of a split while standing, lol. I hope to go again this season. Living in Hawaii kept me away from the slopes for far too long! I think next time I'll try using blades instead of skis, that what a few people we went w/ used and they looked fun...not as fast, but still fun.
I totally thought that my pre lent challenge started saturday...I knew it was sunday...but for some reason I was a day ahead...so I started my no sugar on saturday...I slipped up a tad on Sunday, but I'm full force today!! :drool5: candy in break-room, lol. This is going to be hard!!
I'll start back on my 1hr wii work outs tonight, lol...its not much but I LOVE wii :)

I love V8 juice!! I'm just a tad worried about all the sodium it contains. I tried the low sodium version...YUCK!! I had to hold my nose and chug it!! I don't add extra salt to my food. I never really worried about sodium until I started researching proper nutrition and all. It's hard for me to get the required amount of veggies in a day, so I drink alot of V8...I guess I should research the exact amount of sodium one should have a day.
I'm doing okay w/ my pre lent no sugar competition. It was HARD yesterday, I wanted a chocolate covered pretzel pretty badly...but I held out :) I feel better about myself just b/c I was able to say "no" :)

Sodium is not really bad for you unless you have high blood pressure. It will retain water, so you weight will be up, but it has no affect on actual fat, so that water will go when the sodium goes. Go ahead and drink that V8 :cheers2:

Glad you had fun skiing. My brother does the ski blades and has a blast. I snowboard and that is just too much fun.

Curvie...you're mean, lol...don't TELL me about the chocolate YOU had :drool5: LoL. I love organic blueberry chocolate.....**Sigh**

trops, Oh, I would love to try snowboarding...I love wakeboarding. I guess I'm just afraid I'll go and pay all that money for a snowboard and lift ticket and SUCK at it...and in turn be miserable...lol. However, I AM going to try the blades, b/c I think its just a tad different than skis. I did notice that there were WAYYYYY more snowboarders this year than years past...hmmmmm. Oh, and thanks for the V8 advice. I'll keep drinking it :) I dont have high blood pressure...and the weight doesnt bother me THAT bad, if I know its water and I still feel and look healthy :) :coolgleamA: A number is a number but the way I feel is reality.

I did SUPER w/ the no sugar yesterday!! zip zero!! I'm trying a new soup today for lunch...we'll see how that goes. Its the new V8 garden soup. I have yet to find local honey...I'm trying a different grocery store today. I havent quite figured out proper nutrition...I LOVE reserching nutrition and learning about food and how it works w/ or against your body...but I havent decided if I should try and eat constant, spread out, same calories a day diet or just eat when I'm hungry. I don't typically "over eat" but some days...I'm just not hungry...I might get to 1000 that day and not feel like I need any more food...but then the next day I'll eat 1500 and then feel full. If I force myself to eat, that just doesnt feel natural...but I don't want my metabolism all messed up b/c I don't eat a constant number of calories spread out over every day. hmmmm...suggestions?
I'm trying to stretch more. I am NOT the least bit flexible (I know!! I know!!) so I think I'll add that to my challenge...stretching every morning!! I know it sounds easy...but sometimes I feel like I barely have time to put my socks on in the morning I'm in such a hurry...I would like to eventually work up to doing a 20min yoga workout in the morning. For now I'll stick to just stretching for a few min. before I RUN out the door. I do yoga at night...but morning stretches would feel nice!!

I don't know if you have farmer's markets year round there, but that's a good place to find local honey. Also farm stands. Up here they all close down after Thanksgiving, so it's tough.

Snowboarding is fun, but it's also painful when learning. Not going to beat around that one, but it is fun. My daughter has been asking to learn for a couple years now, but she's been a bit on the young side. Perhaps this year. (she's 9 now)

 I lost 3 lbs from yesterday evening to this morning.........lol water weight and yesterdays weigh-in was at the end of the day and today I weighed in the morning...so I know its not reallllly 3lbs...but man that was cool to see 134 on the scale :) It makes me want to work that much harder, when I "see" results.

So how cool is this....yesterday I ran to Victory Secret during my lunch break and picked up a pair of super soft, cozy, long, pj bottoms for my bestfriend. I took them to the register and the lady scanned them and said "uhm...these are free."......FREE!!! long story short...b/c I totally didnt believer her....they really really were free!! They had them marked down to 75% off the original price and then anything redlined was an extra 50%...so I thought I was getting them for 10bucks, still a good deal, but THEN they had a sign that said 10off ANY pink pants.....sooo that made them FREE. The lady actually put the pants in a bag and just handed me the bag w/ a reciept that said 0 balance, lol........so I grabbed 20 more pairs, :biggrinjester: THEN I hit up the other two malls in the area and got over 40 free pairs of VS pj bottoms :) :) So all my female family and friends are getting pj bottoms from me this week :) ........oh and the best part...they were originally @ 50bucks. SWEET!! I love a deal, scratch that, steal!!

I'm doing GREAT on the no sweets, I'm doing pretty good on cravings too...I barely crave the candy in my bottom desk drawer :) I just make my mind think about things I have to get done today once it starts to make its way to thinking about the sugar screaming at me!!

Lindsey, you're at an IDEAL weight right now and it sounds like you listen to your body--I think you have it all figured out for YOU. You're doing GREAT, as long as you're getting enough vitamins and minerals, and are OK on the macros, you're FINE. Calcium and iron are two things lots of ladies don't get enough of--do you take a multivitamin?

I would like to eventually work up to doing a 20min yoga workout in the morning. For now I'll stick to just stretching for a few min. before I RUN out the door. I do yoga at night...but morning stretches would feel nice!!

I used to wake up early and do meditation, chanting, Yoga, and breathing exercises for 45 minutes before I RAN out the door--it absolutely made my day SOOOOOOO much better and I found I would communicate more from the heart, with people, too. I say go for it! My issue is I commute 50 minutes to work, and I take evening Yoga classes and hang out with my terminally ill friend afterwards, so I seldom get home before 10:30pm....and I have to wake up at at least 6:45 to get to work on time. I've been choosing sleep over morning Yoga, but I think I'll try to get home earlier and do that again, soon. My friend really needs me, now, though :(

Great!! You must be so happy and proud of yourself!!!!

I'm SO going to V.S. this evening! :leaving:

**sigh** yeah youre right...I don't think I stress over what I eat, like I notice some people do. I just eat when I'm hungry, but then...I get to reading and researching and talking and thinking...and then I OVER think and then I start to wonder, "hmmm wonder if I'm eating properly". I do take a vitamin...and I don't get enough Iron!! You're so right!! I tried taking iron pills the doc gave me....they made me :puke:...literally, they were harsh on my tummy :( So now I take a multi-vitamin plus Iron.
If I'm completely honest...my multi-vitamin is actually a childs vitamin, I just take double (doc suggested it)...b/c actually all vitamins make me sick, even my BC makes me sick!! So I chew multi-vitamin gummies :) :)

I'm jealous of all the yoga you do!! I'm def. going to start working on it in the mornings!!

Yeah, def. hit up VS. Make sure you get the pink line sweat pants that are marked 75% off (redlined) you get an extra 50% off of that and right now they have a sale 10$ off ANY pink sweat pants.........they are NOT going to tell you that the pants are free. YOU have to ask for the 10$ off...they wont tell you that you can take it off...they are hopeing that people wont read the sign that says 10off ANY pink :)

So I'm allergic to carrots!!!!!!! why???!!! How STUPID is that!!

I saw a sign today, it said "skinny taste better than ice cream" I think I'll tell myself that "healthy taste better than cookies" lol.

So I've decided that I need to find a different way to excercise. I hate the gym. When I first joined the YMCA I rather enjoyed going. Maybe b/c I never did the same thing two days in a row. I did pilates, kickboxing, step, dance, ab classes....it kept it fun.
I joined a different gym, closer to the house...so better on gas ;) , and now I HATE going....the classes they have are on weird hrs. I'm either working during that time or would get there 20min late b/c they start at 5 and I get off at 5...blah.
So I'm stuck to just running on the eliptical and doing weights all by my lonesome. For this reason I've been VERY slack at going. I miss kickboxing...pilates...step!!! I tried to cancel my membership and either find another gym or just start excercising at home...they won't let me :( So I cant join another gym until my contract runs out w/ this one. Thats what I get for not realllllllly researching my gym choice before joining!!
I get bored easily...but I LOVE nature and being outside. I don't like running just to run...but I like hiking, backpacking, camping, horseback riding, kayaking, skiing...etc. etc. So...I think I'm just going to start doing things I LOVE more and pushing myself harder at the things I enjoy to actually get a workout while doing them. I need to find something I can do daily that wont bore me. :willy_nilly:

So...I ate a bite of NY cheesecake yesterday!!!! :( I posted about it in the challenge forum. I don't think I was horrible for doing it :) but I did feel I should come clean about it, lol.
I'm proud of DH...in a way. He is trying to pay attention to what he eats a bit more. Although, he doesnt have a great grasp on it just yet...he's trying and thats good!! MAN was he CUT and FIT while in the Army!! He got out last Feb.....and......gone up like 2 whole pant sizes. Although, he denies this b/c he still squeezes into his 34 when he needs to wear 38 and those darned buttons that just keep popping off of the pants...thats due to cheap material...not weight gain!!! **sigh** stubborn as a mule.
So last night (at my company holiday party) he ordered flounder and a salad. I was surprised b/c this is NOT what he would have normally ordered...he said "i'm trying to eat healthy"..then the plate came out and it was FRIED flounder, lol..he thought "fish is healthy" but didnt know FRIED fish wasnt...lol. **sigh** at least he willing to try and he is admitting he might just need to change his eating habits!!! I tried to explain he cant eat what he was eating when he was doing PT for HOURS a day!!

The cold front hit SC this morning....it wasnt as bad as I expected. The news was going way overboard!! Telling us southern folk' how to stay out of the cold and keep our water dripping over night so our pipes wouldnt freeze. They even showed pictures on how to bundle up properly!! lol....its 20 degrees....lol.

I got on the scale again this morning. 135lbs. Not bad...I just need to tone up! I would LOVE to show my DH what a six pack is suppose to look like, lol.
Its' fridayyyyyyyyyyyy!!

You have to be happy with what you're doing. Otherwise this isn't a lifestyle... it's more like prison.

Careful that you're not being creative enough in the gym though. You can certainly spice things up in terms of program design or even exercise selection!

If you want any ideas, let me know what you're currently doing and I'll give you my 2 cents.

Oh yea, and I saw you joined my forum. Or someone with the same exact username. :p

Thanks!

Yep!! That was me ;) I love getting as much info as possible...My favorite thing to do is learn...oh no...did I just call myself a dork??

Yeah, I'm def. getting bored w/ the four walls in the gym...I need to be outside...THATS the fit lifestyle I can live w/, lol. Man I wish I lived closer to a ski slope, I could def. do that everyday!!

Well the stickies are full of great information that you probably haven't been exposed to yet.

And if you're interested in having any conversations, that's the place to do it, lol... since there ain't much else happening over there yet!

I agree.

I need the gym for weight training, but that only takes up 2-4 hours per week. Most of the other physical things I do entail outdoor activities.

Blah...its monday :( and I don't feel like I did very well this weekend. I was lazyyyy. My parentes came down and all we did was sit around and play games Sat. night. Then we went out for dinner, wings...my favorite...and I probably over did it **sigh**. I did some major cleaning before they arrived, so hopefully I burned off a few calories.
I've decided to suck it up and continue on faithfully w/ the gym I'm currently a member of until my membership runs out...I was debating on joining ANOTHER gym just to get out of this boring gym...but that would me TWO payments for two gyms and thats dumb. So I'll stick w/ this one until my contract runs out...boring or not. I am searching new ones though and found a AWESOME one...not toooo far from the house, but still on the other side from where I work :( Its got indoor rock climbing though, and I've always wanted to try that. They also have martial art classes, pilates and step...which I love and miss dearly. It's pricey...but I might try it for a month...b/c it might just be worth the money.
hmmmm....oh...I must confess, I ate a sweet this past weekend too :( :( :banghead::banghead: mom brought keylime pie and I fell on the temptation train :( **sigh** It's a new week!!!!!!!!

It's SNOWING here!!! Such a treat...I miss the snow dearly and its rare that we ever get any here in the middle of SC.

I refuse to weigh myself...I wanted to this morning, but w/ it being TOM and all...I didn't want to just frustrate myself.

I had a HARD day yesterday. I found a new home for my beloved doberman :( I know he is MUCH better off...but its still hard and I still cried like a wimp. My dogs are my kids (I refuse to have the real kind, LOL). It was just getting so unfair for him. Now that DH is in school AND work and neither of us can come home during the day to let him out, he was pinned up in a crate for 8-9hrs!!! Seriously one of the best dogs I've EVER had, I miss him dearly. The best hiking buddy!! **sigh** So yesterday was no fun.

Today I had an organic poptart for breakfast...and thats about it, my appetite is so screwed up around TOM.
I've been doing good w/ the no sweets this week and I've been taking a multi-vitamin daily. I've also been working on my breathing and stretching...so those are my accomplishments for now.

Uhhgg, losing a card sucks! Are you going to cancel right away or do you think it's in the house someplace?

Also Lynn, gyms are as boring as you make them. Sounds like your routine needs to be juiced up. Sure, some gyms just give off bad vibes, but that doesn't mean you can't do fun workouts.
