Losing Myself, At least 40 lbs Anyway

If anyone is interested, the E! channel is doing a THS presents investigates Fad Diets.

Right now, they're talking about vegan diets and how this couple became vegans (the diet helped their health issues like migraines). They ended up disregarding medicine and science and tried to cure everything using natural methods. They had a baby and put him on a vegan diet also (mainly soymilk) the baby died of undernourishment. Nutritionists said that vegan diet is not bad for children but have to be very carefully administered to prevent B vitamin and Foliate deficiency. The parents were convicted and now in jail they are still attempting to stick to a vegan diet, basically eating peanuts and what little else would adhere to a vegan limitations.

I think that shows like this, that try to make certain lifestyle changes look bad based on a marginal instances of bad administration, like in the case above that was a result of personal error instead of the actual diet, do an injustice for people who may have been able to benefit from trying out the different diets.

I wouldn't even consider veganism a diet in the first place. There are certain religions that actually require a vegan diet. It really is a lifestyle choice.

Anyhow, it's on right now if anyone in the Pacific Time zone wants to watch.

So my fiance was a doll and woke up this morning and made me breakfast, a healthy one at that. A light high fiber english muffin with 2 slices of turkey bacon, 1.5 scrambled eggs, and a slice of reduced fat swiss cheese! We went out to a late lunch/early dinner later on in the day and I had soup and a salad. Munched on some stuff that probably wasn't very good for me in between but it's ok, I'm finally starting to feel better.

I had suited up for a run and it started raining. We were going to go to the gym but I had canceled our personal training session yesterday thinking I wouldn't be up to it today so I just did some work from home and some chores. Here's what the day looked like:

Fiber: 22/25g
Protein: 100/100g
Veg/fruit: 7/7 servings
Cals: 1316/1200 cals

Not too bad for a splurgey day! :)

They had a baby and put him on a vegan diet also (mainly soymilk) the baby died of undernourishment.

Oh, was that the couple who wouldn't breastfeed, on the grounds that breastmilk isn't vegan? I'm surprised they got pregnant using that logic (oh, if only it took logic to get pregnant) - I'm sure they wouldn't have oppressed some poor cow into carrying a baby for them, so why should they oppress themselves? Heck, by that logic, baby cows ought not nurse, either, to prevent oppressing the mother cow. (I actually know some very nice people who are ethical vegans, and AFAICT, it takes a fair amount of intelligence to be successful at it.)

Glad to see you feeling better!

I'm glad you're feeling better!!!

I saw something about that couple on tv once. How totally ridiculous! So sad really. You should need a special licence to have a baby.

When I lived back East I was a social worker for four years (its what I went to school for) I used to see all kinds of crazy, aweful things. People can have such distorted ways of thinking and living. I couldn't deal with it -- so I moved to Cali and became a snowboard instructor! (not that I do that anymore because I could earn a decent living).

allyphoe: I had to laugh about your comment because I totally agree! I get kind of a kick out of Darwin Award type people also. And I just love it when justice gets served.

Jessafurr: Do you still go skiing even though you're not instructing anymore?

In other news, I'm kind of having a weird morning. After breakfast I usually don't get very hungry until around noon and I've been hungry all morning. I don't know if it's that I had too small of a breakfast or if it's that I didn't have enough protein at breakfast but I've eaten most of my snacks (bananas, tangerines) and it's only 11am. And I've been having these crazy bad food cravings like flaming hot cheetos and brownies.

I'm going to have a very large chicken salad for lunch and I'll probably break that up and eat some at 12pm and then the other half at 2 or 3 pm. I might consider adding some hot sauce to my salad and then having a mini reese's cup to make the cravings go away.

Maybe my body is just adjusting to the smaller meals I've been having and expects to be fed more often. I still don't get the junk food cravings though. Then again, I'm also mood swinging so you know, maybe it's Aunt Flow pre announcing her visit.

lanadefemme, I often find that when I recover from being sick for a couple of days, my appetite returns with a vengeance and I want to eat all around me. Maybe your body is catching up from the cough medicine diet.

I agree you probably are just reacting to recovering from your cold. It'll pass.

I still snowboard a few times a year.. I haven't skiied in several years. I wish I could board more but I didn't buy a pass this year and its like $75 a day without one. Last year, I went quite a bit cause my roomate at the time bought me a pass for christmas (she's rich).

I hope recovering from a cold really is what's spurring my appetite for junk food. I'm pretty sure a lack of protein today helped.

The cough remedy actually is really sweet and tastes like tart honey. I mean, it is lemon and honey. It really did soothe my throat though.

Here's how my bingey day came together:

Fiber: 28/25
Protein: 78/100
Veg/Fruit: 7/7
Cals: 1361/1200

I actually did have a couple things that I try to stay away from, like saltines (they have little to no nutritional value), cream cheese (it's not really even worth the calories because it's not like Dubliner or Drunken Goat cheese), beer (I prefer hard alcohol) and just a lot of salt. I'm sure that I'm going to be retaining water tomorrow so I'm just going to avoid the scales. Lol.

But seriously, aside from the appetite, it's this insane craving for things that are bad for me that I don't normally even eat in the first place. I had a craving today for pork rinds. WTH, I don't even like pork rinds. Oh, and beer. I mean, it wasn't like I was craving Newcastle or some quality beer, I had a Michelob Ultra! Maybe I was momentarily body snatched by a guy on Atkins. Doh.

All in all a great great day lana! Shiat, I would definitely celebrate a 1361 calorie day!

Do you work or stay home?

Hey, thanks for posting on my diary!
I put my fat picture as my desktop background! I can relate to the friends w/ alcohol situation. They always seem to show up after I've consumed all the calories I'm supposed to have too. I prefer beer, but I can't stand light beers so I'm just refraining unless there's an occassion for it, like getting my bathroom organized ha!

Just to chime in on the vegan thing - I have a friend who is a vegan activist, we really aren't close anymore because I don't "fit" w/in her vegan mindset/worldview. For her it's like a very dogmatic religion. What's terrible is she pushes it on her kids & when they've stayed at my house (sleepovers w/ my kids) I've caught them hoarding food, hiding behind the couch stuffing themselves with whole boxes of poptarts or cheese, etc.. I don't say anything to them or her & just let them eat what they want. It's sad because she doesn't just eat vegan, she attaches what they eat to their morality and worth as human beings & it's a huge guilt trip on them & an eating disorder in the making imho.

Lol, me and my friends are such lushes. I like vodka clubs and gin and tonics though.

It's funny that you brought up how some strictly vegan raised kids still eat junk food. I was talking to my fiance about how if you raise your kids (we don't have any yet) to eat right, avoid giving them junk food until they're exposed to it in schools, and get them used to having a taste for vegetables and fruits, lean meats, etc., I didn't believe that the kids would then binge on junk food if given the chance. He argued that children love sugar and sodium no matter how they're raised and if they don't get it at home they'll just do it behind your back. You totally proved him right, I'll have to go tell him. He'll be thrilled.

My car is apparently supporting my health decisions. My driver side window is acting weird, like it'll sometimes respond to going up and going down but sometimes not. I think the window might be off track or something. I'm going to hold off on fixing it though because it's cold right now, the window acting weird is like my car telling me not to use any drive through fast food places and because it's probably going to cost me quite a bit to fix it. I drive a Mercedes ML320, the smaller of the SUV models, and when you roll into the dealership as a woman driving a luxury car they automatically see a target. No thanks.

Honestly, I think happy, well-rounded kids who are given sweets in moderation, but are encouraged to eat healthy meals, will make good choices for the most part. Also if they have a positive relationship with the parent and the parent models healthy eating habits. If they never get sweets then they put them on a pedestal. If they see mom or dad down a half gallon of icecream when she/he is sad or angry they will model that. I mean sure -- kids love junk -- but if they learn healthy eating habits it will go a looong way.

Also I think lots of physical activity helps-- it so good to get your kids used to have physical activity be a part of everyday.

I had a foster daughter for years and I kept that kid busy from the time she got home from school to the time she went to bed. I figured if she gorged on junk at a friends house here or there oh well. The norm was healthy, with a treat here or there. She ate what I ate.

Jessa, you are full of surprises! What got you into fostering?

I ate a quarter of a brownie. It was delicious.

Here's how my day shaped up:

Fiber: 28/25g
Protein: 100/100g
Veg/Fruit: 7/7
Cals: 1346/1200

So I made this delicious spaghetti squash casserole tonight to address my lasagna craving.

I had precooked pork loin and then cooked some spaghetti squash then sauteed it in a mixture of olive oil basil and garlic. I put tomato sauce on the bottom of the baking pan, layered a sprinkling of low fat mozzarella, then cooked spaghetti squash, then thinly sliced precooked pork loin and covered with tomato sauce and repeated the layering about 2 more times. I sprinkled the top with the remaining cheese and popped it in the oven at 350 for about 30-40 minutes, basically until the cheese was melty and starting to brown and the tomato sauce was bubbling. Delicious.

mmmm dinner sounds good! I'm gonna have to make that. When I don't feel like I'm on my death bed I'll give you my chili recipe.

Um I fostered when I was a Social Worker back East. I used to run a safehouse for foster kids who kept getting kicked out of foster homes. So I had this little girl who kept getting booted from everywhere but she did really well with me so I had her move in --I had her from age 11 to 16.

Have a great day tommorrow!

I'm going to resume coma position now....

Oh! even funnier-- my mom used to always squeeze fresh lemon with honey then heated when I was sick when I was little. Super sour -- super sweet you have to take teeny sips. Swear to God!!! I don't have any lemon here or I'd do it right now!

Hey Jessa, hope you feel better soon!

So my fiance is going to make bratwurst for dinner tonight after going to the gym. I love days that I don't have to cook. :)

I'm eating my leftover spaghetti squash today for lunch.

Now I'm swamped at work so I'll write later tonight.
