Looking to lose an extra human I apparently picked up along the way

Mr Vee to the rescue!! You did your good deed for the day there:p

I'm an Android fan, nothing against Apple. To be honest took me a while to decide between Apple and Android. I currently have the Samsung Galaxy S3 and LOVE it. The thing is between the 2 is you have to purchase most apps for Apple where as Android you have 1000's of apps for free. I'm a bit of a techno junkie so love my apps & gadgets!

But you will have to see what fits you better.

I've got an iPhone 5, I really like it. It's easy to use, but you can't easily make changes beyond the basics. If you don't want to spend too much time learning to use it, go with an iPhone - also it will play any iTunes music you might have.

Good job on the hike - making the time AND saving a little girl's knee? You've earned that day off! Good on ya!

Great job on the hike, and saving a little girl's knee...how sweet, MrVee! As far as the phone...I'm an Android fan. I have an HTC Rhyme though....extremely girly phone...you wouldn't want it. lol!

A girly phone might work well with a Hello Kitty skin.

282.5 on Tuesday, and it's a day of personal training.

Forgot to marinade my chicken teriyaki yesterday, so am having it today instead.

Today is also haircut day. Hopefully it works out okay.

My sister said something nice the other day: said when she sees me now it's a little disconcerting. Every time she she's someone she knows, they keep getting older and older, except when she sees me. I'm heading in the other direction. It does seem to be taking a few years off me.

Great job on the weigh in, MrVee. I have to say I am amazed that your weight is still falling at the rate it is. I'm assuming it has a LOT to do with the exercise regimen you're on. It sounds like you're burning some serious fat doing the cardio you do. In my case, I expect big drops in the first few months, but I also expect a slowdown at some point as well. Your efforts give me hope that if I dial in my eating/exercise regimen properly, I can maintain a good weight loss rate for some time, too.

Well I should note that I very consciously did not jet off to a flying start. For about 20 days, I only exercised and did not consciously change my eating habits. Then I cut my calories to 2500. Then after about two more weeks of that I cut it down to the 2100-2200 range it is now. And so those big huge drops you expect at the start really didn't happen for me (I figure I lost 14 pounds the first month).

Furthermore, what happened was that as more and more weight dropped off and in better shape that I got, I found myself exercising more often and at greater intensity. I was not hiking up mountains on the weekends in October, I generally got to the club four or five times a week instead of the 6 days of workouts I've been doing. It's sort of insane what this process has done to my energy levels, I just have a ton.

It's also worth noting that right around mid December we introduced more and more resistance training into the personal training regimen leaving a lot of the cardio for my non-PT days. Maybe that has spiked my metabolism too.

The loss hasn't quite been linear, there's been some flattening to the curve, but not a whole lot at least thus far. I suspect the amount of exercise does have something to do with the consistent weight loss going on close to eight months now.

My workout really kicked my butt today and I don't think I did very well. May have been a lack of sleep as I did not sleep particularly well last night.

MrVee, I'm new here. Was just looking over your thread and wanted to say congrats on the weight loss to date! From what I can gather, our approaches seem similar. I have been trying to stick around 2000 calories a day, plus or minus a couple hundred and have been trying to work out 4-5 times a week. I see you like hiking. I also hike too sometimes. What distance have you worked yourself up to now?

Hi Mr Vee. I just had this image of you as a reverse snowball :D
"Thus far".....I do like your use of the English language Mr Vee. It makes for a refreshing change!
re-iPhone- I don't buy any app's & manage well with the free ones. They are a little big though, but mine travels in my handbag usually. Cheers, Cate

Is that what language that it is I'm speaking? I shall have to remember that. een-glesh

I don't so much do distances so much as directions (usually 'up'). I could probably walk 6 miles with only my feet getting sore, but when the hike is straight up the side of a mountain, it becomes less about how far the hike is but how high up the mountain you get and how fast. I wear a HR monitor and I hike up the mountain until my heart rate gets into the 160s, and then I rest (and drink water) until it gets back down into the 120s and start up again.

Phoenix is not only surrounded by mountains, but different parts of the city are separated by mountains within the city itself. I had lived here for 11 years in January, and until December had never once hiked into the mountains. Seemed a waste, and I have corrected that. I also am trying to get in as much as possible, because unless I want to get up super early my hiking season will end by the middle of May.

Thanks for coming by Cory. Keep up the good work on the exercise and eating front.

I wasn't taking the mickey :blush5: I have a thing about language that's all! I really dislike some things like "get go". Whatever happened to the word start. I know, I know, I'm sounding like an old fart. :blush5:

I bet they're fun hikes. Are the mountains in Phoenix very steep? How's the weather? I live in Appalachia, with an entrance to the Appalachian Trail basically in my back yard. It's really nice because there are miles and miles of unbroken trails with varying degrees of difficulty to choose from. It's not quite warm enough here yet. We're still getting some snow, which really isn't safe to hike in. Can't wait for it to warm up so I can get back out there!

Your fortunate I follow football or else I wouldn't have the slightest idea what "taking the mickey" meant.

Is "thus far" an Americanism or just a somewhat highfalutin' way to say "so far" or "yet" or "hitherto." I do like to mix up the vocabulary a bit. That way when I meet people for the first time, they'll know from the get go that I'm learned and wise. :D

The mountains are steep enough to get the job done for me. I live at about 1000 feet and Squaw Peak is about 2800 feet. My normal trail gets up to about 2300 I think. And the weather right now pretty much redefines the word "perfect." 67 and sunny right now. Some rain coming tomorrow.

LOL at your use of "get go" just for Cate. :)

You are doing really brilliantly... I suspect that you will get to the 100 pound lost milestone before 20 March at this rate - you are doing so well. As the others have said - that's surprising now that you are so deep into a long term project. I used to perk up my weight loss by adding a mile or two to my daily walk when things slowed down - but it all got a bit silly... It sounds like you are doing something similar to boost things every so often.

I am the last person on the planet to give an opinion on mobile phones... I don't like them. I think that I have made one phone call in the last couple of years. Until a week ago I had a 12 year old Nokia which I would have kept - but it broke when Rod was wanting to swap SIMs around. I had to get a new one and my only criteria was that I wanted a good one for recording salsa dancing... I got a new one and Rod immediately commandeered it and gave me his phone saying that he would record the dancing.

As for Valentines Day - love finds us all when we least expect it. You don't have to think that you will have to wait until you are at or near goal weight before it happens. Just as you could fall for someone who didn't have a BMI between 20 and 25, there are plenty of women who value charm, honesty, kindness and a million good qualities that are not in any way linked to appearance. Keep your eyes open and practice chatting to women. They are only human... Let your successful weight loss bring you confidence as you make new friends. You may well find someone long before this time next year.

As for clothes - I found it was a good idea to spend as little as possible on clothes while losing weight... Even tailoring clothes can cost a fortune. You have to pay for people's skill. You are losing weight so quickly that things that fit you one month do not fit well the following month.

I must admit that I got some wonderful outfits at charity shops. I spent next to nothing and got something that fit just right. I wore them for a month or two and handed them back in. It is very green and the charity benefited at both the start and end of my ownership.

I would have never thought of the idea had I not been encouraged to give it a try by other big weight losers on this forum. It suddenly made sense when I thought about the quality of the clothing that I was giving away. When I was a very big person I had actually spent quite a lot of money on clothes. It all became useless to me... I gave away some stuff that was brand new... My husband gave away a suit which he had worn once for two hours for an interview when he lost a lot of weight.

... Hey MrVee - so nice you got a compliment from a family member... if your family is anything like mine...it takes a LOT before they dish out a compliment..more often it's criticism that's abundant... especially to a sibling ! - ;) ..

... You have achieved some very serious weight loss - the complement was well deserved !! ~

Mr Vee just over the weekend me and my friend were talking about the exact same thing. It seems when you are really overweight and you start losing weight it really does make you look younger and somehow prettier. Maybe it's just because you look healthier?!?

That's cool about the energy surge, Vee, it sounds like your metabolism (and body) are saying "about bloody time you used me for my intended purpose!" Keep on riding that high, man, you're totally on the right track. Ever think about aiming for a deadlined goal? I don't know how else to put it, but either a race on a certain date, or some kind of hiking club activity? Just a thought, seems like you have a good system going right now though.

Keep it up!

282.5 again on Wednesday.

The weather is supposed to be abysmal today so it's a great day to get things done around the house until my personal training this afternoon.

LJ,

I haven't really set any deadlined goals. There's some thought in the back of my mind that I could go to Brazil for the World Cup in June 2014, and obviously I'd like to be essentially done with the weight loss process by then. But I wouldn't put a lot of money on me actually going. On the hikes, I do record my times getting to the top of the trail, and each time I try and beat my last one.

When I walked into the Health Club on July 1 and the guy asked me what my goals for weight loss were, I said that I wanted to lose 100 pounds the first year and 50 the next and then play it by ear after that. I'm at 92 right now with a little over 4 months left until the one year mark, and have since become a bit more ambitious with my goals. The model predicts me at 130 pounds lost at the one year mark, and has me reaching a sub 25 BMI before the second year ends. For now I'm going to use the model for targeting purposes.
