Tewantin has an estimated population of 10,000. There are people posting online asking for help to evacuate the nursing homes, there is also a hospital in there. We are North of this fire, and the wind is currently taking it south.

I'm glad there's nothing close - glad your hubby can get a restful night, too - and more, these coming days.

(Your peacock is spectacular! - though the peahen doesn't seem to be impressed! :D)

Fires made the national news here in the states. Said there were 3 fatalities so far. Hope you and your family are keeping safe, Tru.

Continued thoughts for you and your firefighting husband.

Hubby probably won't be going to work on Monday, he had a call from his station to tell him he would likely be sent to refill the water bombing aircraft at the airport tomorrow, while it is cooler today, conditions are supposed to get worse again tomorrow. I don't understand people who ignore the fire ban warnings, it is so tinder dry that using powertools outside is banned due to the chance of sparks. Also no mowing in case a rock is struck and causes a spark etc.

So far so good here, the major fire to the south of us has been downgraded a little and still moving south, The fire to the west of us would have to travel a long way. There have been a few smaller fires but they have been dealt with quickly before they got too big. several were started by tourists using BBQs

It never ceases to amaze me how people just ignore fire warnings. I'm glad you seem safe for now, Tru.

Tourists barbecuing in these conditions should get drafted for simple fire department assistance tasks even if they didn´t start a fire. As for locals who ignore fire warnings: they must be either too dense or too arrogant to be useful for anything.

Best of luck with the fires, they sound awful. As Rob said your fires are headline news here. Your report is impressive.

Like your husband I was a firefighter, years ago. I worked for the US Forest Service, some of the fires were quite large, but most were remote, rarely were homes or people threatened. Its a tough job, I know that.

Isn't it early for fires? Aren't you still in spring with a hotter dryer summer yet to come?

yes, it is going to be a bad season, we should not have this many bad fires this early in the season. The high humidity in Queensland usually make it less prone to bad fires, but with dry drought conditions the sub tropics are burning. The worst areas for fire in Aus is usually southern NSW and Victoria and at time Tasmania (Cates state). Nobody wants another Black Saturday bushfires - Wikipedia

I understand some parts of the US are prone to big fires also (California ?)

http://archibullprize.com.au/teache...ntries-have-the-same-weather-as-australia.pdf I found this visual comparison of Australian climate compared to the rest of the world.

I love that weather map, Tru. It's really interesting. Our Hobart friends wouldn't like seeing this- "Hobart in Tasmania (above) has a similar climate to the UK with its rain and dreary temperatures " It made me laugh :D

Drove around fires to get to Uni. I have an exam shortly, but have the flu (chest and throat) , DOMS and Asthma from the smoke. Good thing I have already passed the subject, and the marks from exam are just icing.

May the air clear soon - and continued good wishes and support for the firefighters.

Oh, Rob. :( I think at least half of Australia's population is looking at this coming season with real disquiet. Why do I even say "this coming season"? The season clearly began weeks ago.

Today so far seems not as bad as feared? One friend of mine evacuated (near Nimbin) - one family member moving stock (inland from Coffs) - and one WLF friend (that's you, Tru! ) suffering smoke inhalation, and her husband on call for firefighting. Continued good wishes for you both, for recovery, and for rest where possible, and of course for safety.

husband on call for firefighting

Yesterday hubby was at the airport from 7 am through to 6:30 pm refilling 4 fixed wing water bombers on a 30 minute turnaround 1573523502394.png

supposed to be a bit of relief today before conditions gets bad again tomorrow.

air quality is ok outside today, but I have lost my voice and feel like total crap.

Seems like tough work.

I heard this story and wanted to share, Tru. NPR Choice page I think you might be aware of many alternatives too but maybe you haven't heard about the study. Glad they mentioned, "it takes work" and "support", etc. I think a lot of people in the US, don't have the resources (including time) to devote to alternative therapies.

It all sounds tough, Tru. I would be in trouble with so much smoke. This season is so scary. G saw our first Tiger snake today.
