Keto Diet

Is there any reason to go on a keto diet for like one or two weeks for some quick fat loss?

Not really, no. Not sure it'd even work, as the idea is that it takes roughly 4 weeks for the body to make the "necessary" adaptations.

If you want to do something for just a couple weeks, maybe consider the Velocity Diet? That's a 28 day program, but if you want extreme balls-to-the- wall dieting, give it a shot. :p

If you wait about 3 weeks or so I'll do it with ya. :D

IMO, this is a loaded question. It depends on the specific goals and current position within these goals on whether one should consider Keto as an alternative.

Dependent on these and other personal factors, manipulating calories and manipulating training/exercise "can" be nearly as powerful if conducted properly, with the "possible" exception of getting sub 10% BF, as some can still have complications even when manipulating calories and exercise, and have to resort to manipulating the nutrients and other factors to get BF to drop more.

When you massively dump carbs from your diet.....your body generally responds by massively dumping glycogen from it's storage. For each gram of stored glycogen, you need 3 grams of water....so when you dump glycogen, you also dump lots of water: this is the "water-weight" they refer to.

The moment you go back to eating a regular healthy diet (which contains healthy carbs)....you're body will replenish those reserves and you'll see a rise in weight.

You don't wanna lose weight, you wanna lose fat!

Occassionally go lower, occassionally go higher...but by-in-large the proven method of eating right, eating healthy and eating a balanced diet at approx. 20% less your caloric needs will be the long-haul winner. And.....you knew this! :D

Exactly how many lbs. of fat do you want to lose within this 1 - 2 week time frame ?

And perhaps more importantly - why ? For example, are you trying to hit some target weight in advance of an upcoming ' weigh in ' date or something like that ?

I'm trying to just lose a little fat before spring break next week. I have been cutting for a few weeks now and have been seeing progress, but thought maybe I could get a short boost by going into keto for a week or so.

Well it probably won't really do too much in a week... I mean, it's a week!

But with that said. You probably won't lose more than a pound of actual fat mass, but you could lose about 7 pounds of weight and you could "peak" for your spring break beach party, or whatever it is.

EDIT: Also, I think Chillen is right.

I've been very low carbs for three days now, do you think its worth waiting out the week or should I just forget it because the results will not be visibly noticeable. I have noticed that my head feels all clogged up and my attention span is much lower right now. I'm not a fan of this low carb thing currently, but I'm willing to give it a week if it's even slightly worth it.

I guess it depends on how long you want your keto results to show.

If you are planning to only have your shirt off for one day, then I would stay on the keto diet up to and through that day.

If you are going to have your shirt off for multiple days and want to look good you can either stay on keto through the whole trip and keep the water weight off giving yourself a dry, cut look... but you would have to stay on keto over the whole time where you want to look good shirtless... :p

If you are going to go on keto for a week and then start to eat carbs again.... and then a day later have your shirt off it will just hurt you because you will just be all bloated from refeeding carbs.

You could get very visible results in terms of water loss, in terms of long term fat loss, one week won't do much of anything for you.

So what are your plans for spring break? Let's figure this out...

That depends.

What is your current body fat % ?

And, how many lbs of fat do you want to lose within this 1 - 2 week time frame you've set for yourself ?

Alrighty then

Realworksucks- Spring break I won't have my shirt off too much, maybe in a hot tub a night or two with some chicas, but not too much that I would feel very insecure. I will also be at home for a few days, and would like to maybe impress the family a little bit :). I won't be able to stay on the keto for the trip however. If it is just water loss then I would say forget it, I'm looking for the real thing.

Wrangell- I am not really sure what my bf% is. Standing a few feet away from the mirror the outline of the abs is visible, and some cuts on the top can show. I would probably say 12-14%. I'm 5'7 and probably 140-143 lbs, but haven't weighed myself in a while because I don't have a scale, so this is all just guesswork. If I could lose 2 lbs of fat within the week I think it would be worth it.

Yeah, with your current situation I wouldn't worry about cutting with keto for one week.

Especially if it's giving you headaches and stuff (drink more water!!) or if you don't like the food etc... it's more hassle than what it will do you good in one week.

Like I said, a pound of fat loss in one week, maybe 7 or so pound temporary water loss.

If it were me, and it's only 2 lbs. of fat I had to lose, I'd just ratchet up my HIIT to 30 minute sessions, 5 times a week and possibly combine it with a further ( but rather modest ) reduction on your overall calories derived from food....but that's just me.

Back in my teens and early 20's I always taking in anywhere from 50% to 60%+ of my total calories from carbs and was ( in conjunction with some pretty heavy duty cardio mind you ) able to hover around 8% body fat without too much trouble. So, while a keto diet may be one way to shred fat ...it certainly isn't the only way IMO.

So, in answer to your question " Is there any reason to go on a keto diet [ to lose 2lbs. a week ] ? " - I'd say, ' No ', a keto diet isn't necessary just to lose 2 lbs. of fat at your body fat level.

Thanks a lot Wrangell and RWS, I really appreciate both of your inputs. The combined information from someone who has done keto with someone who really knows his stuff about nutrition is a very reliable and comforting source of information for me. +rep for both of you.

Your welcome man :)

Ok so now that the week has gone by, I really have 6 weeks to get the body I want. I am trying to decide how to approach it. I will either use something similar to the carb cycling codex, or something similar to the anabolic diet. Anyone have any advice, especially about the anabolic diet? I'm looking to lose about 6-8 lbs of fat over this time which shouldnt be too hard, but it is the last amount so it wont be easy.
