Justina: Back to square one - very excited & determined to do this right

------------------------------------------------------------------------------

I did not weigh in this morning - was too scared - I will do it tomorrow.

Confession: I have given up my coursera course. Human Physiology with Duke University. It was insanely hard for me even though I had some knowledge of Biology & Chemistry from high school - it was not advanced enough. Especially the Chemistry bit.
So I have signed up for another one: Statistics... I should do better - i actually did a course when I was at uni - it just needs refreshing.

I've had exactly three days since starting this process that I did NOT want to get on the scale, fearing the inevitable. It's hard to do sometimes, isn't it?? Funny how certain courses are hard for one person and so easy for another, isn't it? I had to take statistics for my major, and I did OK, but it was a struggle. Odd for a math major, eh?

Good job on getting in your exercise!

Yay for making it to the gym!! And thanks so much for the info on the juicers. My Cuisinart was $125 on sale and I am pretty happy with it. I don't know I will definitely have to do some testing with my leafy greens.

Also, I thought of you this morning, haha. I live literally a block away from a Starbucks but I rarely go. Except today I needed that extra pick me up so I went and got my skinny latte. SOO worth it :)

Also - I am horrible at math but I loved Statistics in college. My only ever 'A' grade in math...hah!

~Camila~

I know what you mean about being afraid to get on the scale. I'm a little afraid to weigh myself this week because I didn't lose any last week.

Don & MrVee - statistic was really not my strongest while at uni - but I passed it - so I wanna get better at it.. & for this course there is no prerequisites other than being comfortable with high school maths...we shall see.

Camila - what's up with juicing greens? Your juicer sounds great!
Starbucks...haha - trying to avoid it tomorrow & the weekend.
So you are great in statistics - i might have to pick your brain sometime! :)

Cory - i must weigh myself tomorrow -ugh - it's weigh in day

-----------------------

Quick food post for the day:
B: EZEKIEL & LATTE
S: Banana
L: Greek pasta salad
S: Nuts & Tea
D: Fresh juice

Really tired today & I am going to the course with my husband tomorrow - so early morning tomorrow.

Hey Justina - good work on the eliptical & healthy ( mostly) drinks !
.. & yup- physiology is a pretty heavy course... I had to take it for my work ( pharmacy)..but was a lot of complicated systems to memorize...
...hope U like the stats course better ( I struggle with stats ...they use them a lot when reporting drug-research studies... eek...)

GOod luck for your weigh-in ;)

Haha I'm not sure about great! But it was a pretty enjoyable class for me. I've since lost (most) everything I learned in that class. As for my juicer, I am just not convinced that I am getting all of the juice from my leafy greens. While the juices are certainly "green" in color, I haven't been paying attention to how much actual juice I am getting. Apparently rolling kale leaves up like a burrito and then putting it into the juicer helps get more juice when using a centrifugal model. Haven't tried it yet. I'll let you know how it goes lol

Maryann - thanks! I am really interested in Physiology, I was really good in Biology when I was in high school - I represented school in national competitions. I never really got into Chemistry though - I did fairly well - but never went out of my way to excel. This course says it's "introductory" but many people found it to be not... I'd love to do one that really is introductory and explains concepts rather than just touching on them.

Mystic - thanks!!

Camila - Yeah - i think it's normal not to get much juice from greens - that's why they are sooo expensive when you buy some at a juice bar...We just add it as an extra ingredient - rather than the base. I use carrot or apple for base. Or for green juices: cucumber!! & celery are good.
Plus we bought "green juice" - which is powder we mix with water - we have it every morning with breakfast - it has a lot of green ingredients: spirulina, kale etc... So eating the greens, juicing them & having them in the "powder" :D

-----------------------------------------------------------------------

The one-week course is over!!! Yay! We were there the whole day from 8am-3pm - we got some useful info (it's about my husband's job)
We got to finish grocery shopping (the course ended a bit early) that we started yesterday. We go to multiple grocers...
Yesterday we had freezing rain and the weekend looks equally lovely.....oh well.

we ate out today - there is this deli my husband wanted to take me for ages...I was not too impressed. It was Greek food. I loooove loooove Greek food. But what we got as "gyros" did not really resemble the Greek goodness that I m used to.
Plus they served it with FRIES!!! I did not have have a whole portion - we halved one portion with my husband - and instead of the soda (which was in the "combo") we asked for water.

Still starbucks-ed - this was the LAST time this month...we checked how much we spent there and got a big shock...:eek2:
I had some healthy snack too. Pistachios & clementines! Yummmy!
Not sure about dinner yet...Going out is on the cards...but I know I will feel bad afterwards...hmmm unless I go to the gym...I wish it was open till later. they close at 10 pm on a Friday and 6 pm during the weekend!!

I never get why gyms close so early on the weekends. Those are a lot of people's prime workout days. You'd think they'd stay open later.

Hey Justina!
Just popping in to say hello to a few old faces as I haven't been around for a while. It sounds like things are going well - great healthy eating!! Not sure how you are surviving without high % chocolate though, its one of the things that keeps me on track with NOT eating everythign else! So...great willpower!!
Jay

Justina, me and you will get along stunningly with your love of Greek food!!! The best hey?

Go out and then you can go work it off afterwards at the gym!

Cory - I wish gyms stayed open late on Saturday and Sunday! My gym stays open 24/7 for uniformed members....and they don't really bother about the rest of us - in the end of the day at least it's "free".

jjjay - thanks! :) I don't know either how I cope without chocolate!! I never be so silly to give it up! Next time I ll give up something else, like chocolate under 60% lol :)

Mands - yup!! love Greek food! I can make a few things - but not the elaborate meat dishes... we have an awesome authentic Greek restaurant here - it's such a simple place (no hostesses, greeters..etc) - it's a small family run business. I love it.

----------------------------------------------------------------------

So yesterday we ended up not going out, so no gym either. But I ended up eating a whole box of Annie's (organic snack mix) & a glass of red wine - instead of dinner. I was gonna juice - but my husband was lazy - said he doesn't feel like washing up. We usually share the "burden" of juicing. I do the preps & the juicing & he washes the juicer. The whole thing doesn't take longer than 35-40 minutes...so 20 minutes each...but anyway..today is a new day...

Better news.. I have the indication that my water retention is about to go!! (tom) YAY! It was about time.

Ok there are 2 things I wanted to share with you
.
(1) I accidentally found some awesome recipes for juicing - for those of you who fancy trying juicing:

I like the recipes - i might try them too!
(2) I found an amazing food pyramid - the best I have seen so far! You know what is the best thing about it? it's interactive! You can click on each level and it gives you a lot of info!!! Tons of interesting and useful details!! They also have a print out format too:

I accidentally found this yesterday - while I was looking for something else - what a great find! :coolgleamA:

OK....New weigh in day for the challenge & it sucks : 258.5 BOOOHOOOO...but with the water retention about to go I think I ll get down quite a bit this week!

& I m off to the gym right now!!! :willy_nilly::hurray:

Wooohoooo thanks for sharing the juicing recipes!!! I will have to look into the green powder...that sounds a heck of a lot easier (and cheaper) than juicing all that stuff...Also be very thankful you have someone with whom you can share the burden of juicing. In my case it is all me all the time. Blah!

Also. Annie's organic stuff is addicting. My new "treat" is Powerberries from Trader Joe's. They center is acai, pomegranate, cranberry, and blueberry juice covered by dark chocolate. Oh my gosh are they heavenly. The best part is that I really only want a one or two at a time, not the whole bag.

Thank you for sharing that food pyramid! I love it.

Challenge day!!! Good for you getting off to the gym. Have a fantastic Saturday!

~Camila~

Hey Justina ;) good work on off to the gym now, and happy tom-finally-here-water-weight-going-away ... lol.
and thx for the links , I will check them out , .... I hear u on the "work" of washing all the juicer parts, I am definately too lazy for that...that's why I do my "blender juices" in the blender & live with the bit of pulp/fibre included...

have a good one gal,
cheers Maryann

Hey Teammate! Sorry about the gain, but like you said that may make your losses during the coming week even better! I'm going to check out those links for the recipes and pyramid... by the way, the Vitamix thing I bought is EASY to clean.... 1 minute. I know it's spendy, but it is SUCH a good tool.

Hey, it means we might see big numbers initially for the challenge..........until a month from now when we go back up.

Camila -I am very thankful for him doing the washing up...it was like - we bought the juicer - back in September last year - and it was sitting in a corner in its box - collecting dust. & my husband was bugging me - let's use it, open it...blah blah...i was like ugh...i hate washing that thing up (I had it in Spain before) - he was like: ok, i ll wash it up...and the agreement was born :D
Annie's is addictive!! I probably shouldn't buy it at all. Powerberries from Trader Joe's sound yummy!!I think I could eat anything dipped in dark chocolate haha!
I am glad you like the pyramid! :) i think I will print it myself!!

Maryann - I hear you about blending juice - you have to be disciplined to do juicing :) we bought a tooth brush just for the juicer! It's funny but it does the job!!

Mystic - thanks so much! :p

Don - I truly hope the excess water weight leaves me already!!!! As for the juicer - we are planning on investing in something more expensive - but with the moving and everything going on in June - we just wait for a) our juicer breaks down - its going pretty well for its price!!! b) we are settled in the new place - at the moment our kitchen is super tiny - I have trouble to put things away as it is . lol.

Cory - yup, I certainly hope seeing lower number in the end of week 1! :)

----------------------------------------------------------------------

Rainy, gray day here...ugh...and cold...Isn't it spring?????
So we were stuck in our tiny apartment the whole day. We did go to the gym in the morning!! I did an hour elliptical!! Go me!! :) But the rest of the day imprisoned at home.

My husband cooked lunch for me - I usually cook every day- but he now knows how to make a few things. He usually learns the things he likes, e.g. Greek pasta salad or home made hummus :) The other things he ALWAYS makes - and I wouldn't touch them - are pancakes & fried eggs - he is brilliant with those.
Anyway today he tried a new recipe from our book: Forks over knives (I got it from my sister for Christmas - because we loved the movie - but we haven't really touched the book since then). He picked an Egyptian dish called KOSHARI - the ingredients seemed pretty weird at first glance - but it came together beautifully with all the spices - it almost smelt like Indian food. Deelish!!!

We were supposed to juice today...and now it's past 8 pm - I am still not hungry!!! I had a tea earlier but that's eat. Combo of brown rice, legumes, spices, tomato etc still keep me going strong after 6-7 hours!!

Hey Justina,
Good job on the elliptical! I did the same thing this morning...great minds think alike! Your husband's prepared dinner sounds yummy, and very healthy..and obviously filling because you didn't get hungry! It's amazing how real, whole foods satisfy much more than processed, carbohydrate loaded foods! Great choices girl, and don't worry about the TOM...it will come and go...you keep up the exercising and good food choices, the scale will move in the right direction..it has to! You might have to bump up your exercise though...if you're body is like mine, it adapts quite quickly and is much more efficient at exercising and seems to burn less calories! Sucks, but true!
Keep up the good work!

Sarah
