Just a thought

Ok I am not an expert here, so take this as an idea not a system of training.

look at how we live these days. we are forever sitting on our arses, thats why I think we have so many gyms popping up all over the globe.
I have a very good friend from russia and he told me there is a saying there
"only the wealthy are fat" at first I thought he was referring to the poor being hungry, but he wasnt, simple put the wealthy have all the luxuries and therefor no longer use their sweet and labour to get through the day.
Now think about the average day of say an american in his 30's. lets just say person X has a desk job, that mean that he is on his arse for 8 hours so minus that from the 24 he has each day and we have 16hrs,
say he has a 2hr round trip commute each day and we are down to 14hrs.
then relax in front of the tv after work to unwind say 3hrs and we have 11hrs left.
now an hour of arse time for breakfast lunch and dinner only got 10hrs.
30mins toilet time and we have 9.5hrs
8hrs sleep and we have 1.5hrs
use those 1.5 hrs for the gym to stay inshape, and we wonder why we are so overweight??
I say unplug the TV get up to 4.5hrs. dont use a ride on mower, push it, get a hand saw, dont buy fire wood chop it, if you can ride a bike to work then do it. Dont watch sports on the weekend play them.
stop driving where ever you go, walk, skate, ride a bike, run, rollerblade, what ever it is you will probably enjoy it more and get fitter.
The only way to sustained weightloss is sustained activity, not just a poultry 3hrs a week sweating in a gym.
Sorry my thought aren't more clearly layed out I am tired, wa my day off and I went for a 4 hour surf, while the WCT was playing live on the pc at home!

any thoughts

Honestly, it's easier said than done. You have a "gung ho attitude" towards wanting to be healthy. That's awesome and more power to you. However with regards to your post, it depends on the individual. Your Person X example seems to be rather far fetched IMO. What about these people who are busting their asses off working two jobs to support their family? Not only are they working hard with their two jobs, but they're also trying to find time to be that perfect mother/ father role model to their children? (ie: attending games, going to school open houses.) I'd like to call this individual "Person A-Z."

Also, living in America, there are TONS of fast food joints everywhere. Sure, it's easy to say, "You know... you wouldn't get fat if you put that cheeseburger down." However, Americans love their fast food for two reasons: 1) it's cheap, 2) and convenient. I can understand how one living from paycheck to paycheck can find comfort/ease in such foods. It's brilliant really... even if it's unhealthy.

What point am I trying to make here? Everything you listed is easier said than done. For many, it seems there just isn't enough hours in a day and I can understand why they feel they don't have time for themselves. (ie: working out, taking care of themselves mentally and physically, etc) By no means am I saying one shouldn't get any physical activity in. If anything, I believe people need to understand that you don't have to bust your hump in a gym to get that "me time." It can be as easy as walking around your neighborhood for a few minutes at a time, playing ball with your kids, or even parking your car further from a store. Luckily for forums such as the WLF, Person X and Person A-Z can slowly understand it all starts with baby steps... it doesn't have to happen overnight. Hey, I'm not an expert, but that's just my thoughts.

Sheryl as always you make solid points and yes my person X is a generalization, and my ideas in that post were aimed at people in a similar position to person X, I also exaggerated them to make the point clearer.
I am more than aware about living on a budget or having to take care of kids etc, I have a sister who is a single mum, my mother worked and raised 3 kids on a low income and with no support, and I lived with a girl with a young boy for 2years while we were together. My ideas were not aimed at those people nor am I making a criticism. So, on that front I will agree with you. I currently run my own business (in my second language), work on weekends to help my friends business, surf daily, teach English to kiddies, whose parent can’t afford to send them to a language school *English is a requirement in all Japanese schools and a big part of advancing to the school of your choice), surf , go to gym, type on this forum and build and maintain a website, I travel on average 2000kms per week by car, take care of all domestic stuff as I am currently living alone. Believe me I know that “damn I just want to sit on the couch and chill out” feeling, or “to hell with cooking I am getting a burger”, but I decided to live an active and healthy life and the costs of that include making the effort to not take the easy way out. The temptation is always there, it is always a fight, but getting easier the more I work on it.

I will disagree on the fast food angle, simple convenient, cheap yes, but does that make it an viable option...no, not if you wish to be healthy, if you (by “you” NOT referring to YOU) are a person that is unconcerned with what you consume then go ahead, but there are plenty of ways to make meals that don’t cost a fortune. I am not a militant, my advice is only an offer, not a push.

I understand that making changes in a person’s life and mindset are not easy, but really in this day and age what good things are easy? If obtaining goals were easy then we wouldn't have forums like this one. One major thing I see these days which is becoming an epidemic problem in my view are TV and video games, yeah they are great fun, and I think there is nothing wrong with enjoying them, but all things in moderation. I am only 29years old, it wasn’t so long ago that a child playing meant sports, or reading, or just general socializing with other kids, now kids spend hours sitting in front of a screen, while parents allow them to ingest fast food, calling "hey its cheap and convenient" as an excuse. People will often, and again I am generalizing here, spend hours searching the net for weight loss tips, or watching a TV show, but then complain they have no time to implement change in their lives, if you want to change then do it. To quote Henry Rollins to the best of my memory, “Don’t think about it, do it. Don’t talk about it, DO IT, DO IT, DO IT!”

Now if you are working 2-3 jobs or raising kiddies then those are extenuating circumstances, but for those who aren’t, I think it is time to step up, and put in the work, if in fact you really want to be healthier. It is not easy, and yes I believe in increments in all training, but unless you start and commit it will never eventuate.
Just my point of view

Ummm maybe your definition of "viable" is different from mine, because actually fast food can be a "viable option" for many. Hmmm... maybe you meant to say a "healthy option."

People are hungry.. people are broke... people are running around like chickens without their heads... tah dah! Fast food. When I said it's "brilliant" I meant the actual goal/ marketing genius behind fast food corporations.

Wait, so you mean our environment has changed faster than our bodies can adapt leaving us screwed?

Ya don't say!

:p

Ahhhhh soooooooo.... you so smart, grasshopper. ??kole akamai 'oe! hahaa! I'll tell you the translation later.

I agree Sheryl..

***

inform team:

Many of us do not live where you can ride a bike/walk places bc it is too freakin' far..

Maybe if our towns/cities would build better communities we could have that option..

My grocery store is 25 mins away when there is low traffic...Plus, I don't think I could ride a bike/walk with a months worth of groceries..:rotflmao:

I'd probably get knocked out as well for my stuff/purse/etc..

Hubby can't do that bc his job is 35 mins away by car and he deals with massive traffic so it ends up bein' longer..

My 13-yr. old- son could walk/ride bike to school to get in more exercise {would take him 15-20 mins} but I don't allow it bc of the world we live in.

#1 - People drive insane around here and we are too far from the school to have crossing guards.. He'd have to cross 2 crazy busy intersections..

#2 - In the last 2 months we've had an older man flashing boys/girls...
We've also had a different man trying to pick up boys/girls..
I do not want my son raped/murdered..
I'd then spend the rest of my life in prison bc I'd kill the person that hurt my child..{no joke}

Same goes for women in general now a days walking/riding bike places..

We have to worry about rape/murder/drunk drives/insane drivers/etc..

When I go to the park and walk - all of the women {including me if I'm not usin' my weights} carry thick sticks/bats/etc for protection..}

I'm a SAHM and have a busy routine..Walk dog/play with dog/I have to wash clothes/clean house/prepare meals/catch up w/family via phone/take--pick up son from school/take--pick him up from choir/debate club/cook/clean kitchen/run errands/etc...

It's hard to now squeeze in time to prepare fresh/healthy meals{this does take time} - take longer walks with dog - go to the park to walk laps - fit in cardio at home - etc..

I'm lucky that I even can..

Imagine all of the moms that want to SAH but can't..All the single moms that have to work and then come home and try to be everything for their kid{s} and also try to keep up w/chores..

As was already stated..

Much easier "said" than "done".......

Opening smart you?

oh the lives live huh?
well all i can say is steve you are a fool, i write my opinions and all you can come back with is one line of sarcasm, bravo! you seem to be following my posts or something because you have remarked with about the same lack of wit on every one, either add something to the proceedings or find something else to do. jeez
Sheryl no I dont think fast food is a viable option at all, in the same sense as if someone was to sell flavoured pieces of cardboard as food I still wouldnt consider it food.I will be heading back to Oahu next year to catch up with some surf buddies I met in Indo, so curious to know what that phrase means?
Hickgurltx, I m sorry to hear about the neighborhood you are in, is so dangerous, what is with these freaks attacking people, and yes easier "said" than "done", but not impossible, my mother raised 3 kids we had 2 dogs, she worked 40hrs a week with 3hrs commute each day in total, and was on minimum wage, we were in a very rough area of Sydney australia, but Junk food was only eaten in my family at most 3 or 4 times a year, and my mother always kept in shape, rough neighborhood so she worked out at home after we all went to bed, again incredibly tough to do, but she did it all the same!
Also as i said before this is only my advice, to those who want to listen. obviously what works for me will not suit everybody, but being that this is a forum I thought expressing your opinions was the point. I really didnt come here to but heads on who is right or wrong, I dont overly believe in that system of thought.

Fool?

LOL, ok.

I was sincere with my remark. But screw you.

you seem to be following my posts or something because you have remarked with about the same lack of wit on every one, either add something to the proceedings or find something else to do. jeez

Sorry dad.

I respond to a lot of threads here. Last time I checked I did not have to abide by your set of standards and rules. Might want to check out of a PUBLIC forum if you don't want people reading your crap or if you believe each member should respond a certain way.

That's not how this works.

Plus don't be jealous b/c I can sum up your point in 10 words instead of 500

Also as i said before this is only my advice, to those who want to listen.

Yea, people are listening or they wouldn't respond. Dur.

obviously what works for me will not suit everybody, but being that this is a forum I thought expressing your opinions was the point.

Right, which every single person in this thread has done. It seems to be a severe case of "your opinions count and ours do not."

Okay, seriously. I came to this site to get ideas, encouragement and I just wasted like 15 min reading all this silly stuff b/t you guys thinking there must be something useful in all this, but no I just wasted time. NO OFFENSE. My point is-can you like message each other instead of putting it in the forum? Its a waste of everyones time.

Hahahaha, this is a public forum. I've spent plenty of time typing out very detailed, helpful posts. I think I'm entitled to some light banter on the open, public forum..... just as anyone else is.

I could pull out more threads on any given forum that are pointless or off-topic than are helpful and on-topic.

If you use your line of reasoning, I don't think you are going to like internet forums.
