Just a little bit more to go ...

Sporadic updates due to life getting in the way. ;)

I decided I'm going to implement a 5# challenge to myself, here in my journal. I find when I'm competing (even against myself) I seem to do better and stay more on track. The goal/challenge is to lose 5# and stay on plan with both eating and exercise. So here we go.

Day 1
SW: 177.4 (as of this morning)
GW: 172.4

I'll weigh daily and post my results here, as well as noting the previous days diet and exercise.

5lb Challenge: Day #2

SW: 177.4
CW: 176.8
GW: 172.4

Dinner: Gazpacho and grilled shrimp for dinner and a baked apple with cinnamon for dessert.
Water: about 80 oz
Exercise: 30 mins intervals, running

5lb Challenge: Day #3

SW: 177.4
CW: 177.0 (-0.4)
GW: 172.4

Dinner last night was grilled chicken and skewered, grilled veggies and a baked potato. I had a vodka rocks after dinner and this morning I'm somewhat puffy. Bleah. I know better. It's also almost that TOM, so I'm sure I'll weigh up the next few days.

I didn't work out last night because I had to meet a client. Tonight I'll put in a little extra.

5lb Challenge: Day #4

SW: 177.4
CW: 175.4 (-2.0)
GW: 172.4

Whoo hoo. Progress.

Dinner last night was fish tacos ... grilled mahi, corn tortillas, shredded cabbage, tomatoes, avocado, salsa. So good.

Workout last night was 15 mins weights, 30 mins running intervals (5k), 15 mins brisk walking.

This morning there's a waffle breakfast at the office and I'm having a hard time resisting. I will probably have 1/2 a waffle and then stick to fruit salad for lunch.

Why does work make it so hard for us to be healthy! We have bagels from Panera every Friday and I am forcing myself to stay away from the break room so that I don't accidentally smell them. I don't know if I could resist :)

Congrats on progress!

5lb Challenge: Day #5

SW: 177.4
CW: 175.4 (-2.0)
GW: 172.4

No change in weight, but it's that TOM, so I didn't expect there to be. I'm surprised I didn't go up, in fact.

I stayed strong at work yesterday. Had 1/2 a waffle and some eggs. I had already brought gazpacho for lunch, so it was light and low-calorie anyway.

I wound up going to bed early last night and didn't eat dinner. I didn't mean for it to happen that way: I got some bad news and had a good cry, then went upstairs to take a nap because I just felt drained. The next thing I knew it was morning. I truly intended to sleep for about an hour and get up, but I guess my body had other ideas.

I'm a little sore from my Thursday workout today. I added more weight than I usually do when I did my lunges - usually I hold on to 2 15# dumb bells, this time I had 2 20# ones. My butt hurts! :D Who knew that 5# each could make such a difference.

Yesterday I ran/walked 5k in 3 minute alternating intervals (43 mins total - not great, but not awful). I also did 15 mins of uphill walking (a 10 incline).

Today it's the farmer's market and maybe a trip to the outlet mall. Or maybe, if the temps get up into the mid-90s again, it'll just be stay home in the a/c. :)

Looks like things are going well. Glad you're keeping up with the 5k training. Keep it up!!

5lb Challenge: Day #6

SW: 177.4
CW: 175.4 (-2.0)
GW: 172.4

I didn't weigh this morning, since I slept in (until noon - utter bliss) and then wound up drinking a huge cup of coffee and a 1/2 bottle of water before it occurred to me to step on the scale. :)

Sunday is our snacking day around the house - so no real meals, just snacks. I've had watermelon and feta, 1/2 a pb sandwich on whole grain, a handful of radishes, some grapes, a Diet Coke, some oats with cheese, and an apple.

It's pork loin on the grill tonight, with grilled veggies, and grilled peaches for dessert. Mmmmm.

5lb Challenge: Day #7

SW: 177.4
CW: 178.4 (+1.0)
GW: 172.4

And this, children, is why you shouldn't use the scale as your only guide to your progress. *grumble* There is no reason why I should be up a pound today, except that it's my TOM and I'm sure I'm retaining water like a camel. But ... I said I'd be accountable here, and so I'm posting the real numbers ... even though I don't particularly like it. ;)

I ate really well and on plan this weekend - I had my usual Five Guys hamburger treat on Saturday, but I accounted for those calories and compensated accordingly the rest of the night. And yesterday I had grilled pork loin and a ton of grilled veggies for dinner - so good and so healthy.

Today I think I'm going to grill fish and more veggies.

Hopefully by Wednesday I'll be back down to 175 or lower ... that's the way it seems to go with me.

Hey Kara,

I can totally relate on the frustration for what water weight adds to the scale. Although you know what it is, the number can still be a bit discouraging. It sounds like youre eating healthy though, so keep up the good work!

5lb Challenge: Day #8

SW: 177.4
CW: 177.6 (+0.2)
GW: 172.4

Gah. Up and down is the story of my life.

I ran/walked 3 miles yesterday.

Dinner was grilled shrimp, a tomato and radish salad, and grilled okra. And a vodka tonic. It was that kind of day.

Hi Kara,
You don't know me, but I've just read your journal, and I think you have great goals and motivation. ;) Just curious, do you have a timeline for this 5lb drop, or is it that you are working for it and whenever it happens is good? I have never set a 'weight' goal, except for generally wanting to drop 25lb. Right now, it's all I can do to keep my calorie intake under control! Anyways, I think your workouts seem great, and I am totally blown away that you belong to TWO gyms.
You said some time earlier in your posts that you have some good recipes. Where can I look for those?

Looking forward to reading more of you!

Hey Kaiser! Thanks for the kind words. :)

My overall timeline for my last 40-ish# is by November (I have family coming into town for the holidays who haven't seen me in 2 years and I really want to surprise them!). My goal for the 5# is more open ended. As fast as I can make it happen healthily is pretty much it. I just find that if I concentrate on 5# at a time, I tend to do better than if I'm focused on the whole 40#.

Ideally I'd be losing about 1.7# per week, so at that rate 5# should take me about 20 days. Hm. Never figured that out before. :) So I guess that's it. I'd like to see 5# every 20 days or so, but if it comes off faster, that's good!

There's a link to my food blog in my signature which is where I put a lot of my recipes. I'm way way way behind in posting there and need to get my act together. I'm down some camera equipment this month, as I had to ship some things off to be repaired, and that's part of why I'm behind. The other part is equal amounts stress and laziness. :)

I'll get it going again soon ... I've promised some other people to post some grilled veggie photos so I have to get on that. ;)

whats up Kara? Don't let scale fluctuations get you down!

Lyles got a good post on the subject

Leigh kinda simplifies it a little more too

Love Lyle's article. Yeah, I have experienced both of those ... the whooshes and the squishy fat. So I'm totally on board with that.

I just have to be patient and patience isn't really my strong point! :D

5lb Challenge: Day #9

SW: 177.4
CW: 176.6 (-0.8)
GW: 172.4

Nothing exciting going on. Weights followed by ss-cardio on the eliptical last night. Had a slice of pepperoni pizza and a big salad for dinner. Calories right around 1650 total.

Took a hot bath and went to bed early. If nothing else this week, I'm getting a full 8 hours of sleep a night. ;)

Hey kara, nice website, awesome pictures, seeing those lemon tarts and veggie lasagna, your website is making me hungry.

5lb Challenge: Day #10

SW: 177.4
CW: 176.8 (-0.6)
GW: 172.4

Blah blah blah blah. Same old stuff. Ran yesterday. Ate about 1700 calories with a nearly perfect 40/35/25 split.

Lotsa drama and stress in my life right now and I'm ready for it to be over.

WT - Thanks! :) I need to get back to it, but I'm swamped with other stuff and I have 2 cameras in the shop right now. All part of the stress I mentioned above. Bleah.

hey kara,
just thought i should pass by and say i passed by your food blog which i thought was really excellent and i LOVE the pictures really professional....i had the misfortune of clicking on chocolate and going into a few of the recipes, oh the decadence:drool5: lol!

i particularly liked your mayo article about real foods versus the light/low fat options. i liked how you put it simply to read the instructions of the two products in order to see how the low fat products have so much more artificial stuff in them. it's one of those things that i knew in the back of my head but just seeing the two labels back to back made all the difference.

i have to say that since reading that article i pretty much threw out my low fat mayo (which tasted like crap anyway), and bought myself some good quality spread that i now use in moderation.

otherwise congrats on the weightloss so far, and all the best as you go on to your goal weight.
