Juliette cross-training for Romèo

True, especially with wild game. The best meal I ever had in my life with venison at a restaurant in Eltville, south of Frankfort, along the Rhine. Even though it was 20 years ago, I can still taste it!

Wonderful sunny Sunday to everybody!
Today's a weight-training day. I'm going to hit the gym right now in the morning, and hopefully be back home already at lunchtime for some quality time in my balcony.
What I really like about weight-training is not so much the increasing weights (numbers are more for men maybe?) but the increasing understanding of the different exercises. I've been training my motor skills all my life, so the inspiring thing here is to combine that with muscle strength. And as with new things always, the learning curve is quite steep. Every time I make new discoveries in how to do things better. That's enjoyable, to say the least! :)

Hi Juliette, your continual dedication and weight loss really inspires me to get my healthy plan started! :D
Thank you for welcoming me today :)
It means a lot!

I've never really done any serious weight training, but I'd really like to tone up my arms and midsection.

LOL, that may be so, I admit, but the other feeling that you like applies to men too, I assure you. There's something very inspiring about executing a move with good form.

About weight training: You might want to read this thread http://weight-loss.fitness.com/weight-loss-through-exercise/11048-workout.html
There are some very detailed instructions for beginners among other things.
There's actually no such thing as toning. During weight-loss (calorie deficit) the weight-training serves as a hint to your muscles that they are still needed. The idea is to maintain as much of the muscle mass as possible and lose fat mostly. The "toning" effect comes from fat reduction which allows the muscles underneath to show more. I'm sure that's what you're after as well. ;)

Thanks for that. When I read my own text there, I realized it didn't quite come out as I meant it. :)

Now back from the gym I'm enjoying the wonderful feeling of not having a worry in the world. :D I did only a minimal amount of cardio to warm up and to cool down, but increased weights on two exercises and really put my mind and body into the rest as well. Oh bliss!! (I mean now, not DURING the session. :rolleyes:)
Now I'm going to go to the balcony just to sit in the sun, maybe read some. :cool:
Julie

hope you're enjoying that sun right now :D i'm going to have some socializing with my bed wathcing movies :) but stopped by to see what you're up to today.

enjoy that sun for me too :D
Lena

Well, Kim, you're gonna get a bit of an advantage tomorrow, since I'm not going to go to this graduation party counting calories. It's been about five years since I've last seen these people and I will eat as much of my aunts delicious cakes as I see fit. :rotflmao:
Back on track Sunday though, I hope. ;)

In the evening where going to have a barbecue on the beach. Portable grill, good food, friends, the works. I'm hoping the paperwork gets done when I know how wonderful the evening's going to be. 25C on the weather forecast.. :cool:

WEEK 1 - My Summer Challenge 2007 May 28th-August 15th

WEEK 1
Measurements for June 4th 2007
Waist 30.7 -> 30.1
Hips 39.4 -> 39.4
Breast 39 -> 38.8
Thigh 21.3 = 21.3
Calf 14.6 = 14.6
Bicep 10.6 = 10.6
Arm just below shoulder 12.6 -> 12.4
Weight 150 lbs -> 147.8 lbs
Fat 28,8% -> 27,8%
Water 51,9% -> 52,7%
Muscle 33,6% -> 33,7%

Goal
21st June
145 lbs or waist under 30"
15th August
140 lbs or fat under 26%

The week went well.
I did 4 sessions at the gym (3 weight-training, 1 muscle workout class, some cardio every time), had 2 rest days and 1 cardio only day.
I ate an average of 1828 cals a day and used an average of 455 cals a day for exercise.
I managed to combine eating and exercise to my life so that neither suffered. The progress towards the goals began very well, but I have to consider some of the weight-loss to be water, so I can't expect this kind of loss next week. The plan seems to be working though, 2.2 pounds this week tells me the 2.8 pounds left from my first goal by June 21st should be doable. 2½ weeks, 1.1 pounds a week. :)
This week I'm going for 3 sessions at the gym Tue, Thu, Sat (2 weight-training, one class, cardio every time), one rest day Fri and three cardio only days Mon, Wed, Sun. Same kind of calories, there's no need to change that.

Thanks everybody for your comments. They have kept me going on the few weak moments! :D

Hey Juliette,

How're you doing? It's great to be back - being ill got me so down! I'm so pleased you're on weight training, and you like it - I do too! It's my favourite way of working out, well, aside from walking.. Before I got ill, I started on a new weight training programme working my biceps, triceps, lats, back, thighs, butts, abs and legs, and it's amazing how much it works! Just that feeling of pain whenever I move tells me that I'm working the muscle, and it's not just sitting there, wasting away. I DO like the increasing weights though, because I feel like my strength is increasing, and my technique's getting better. I guess I was a man in a previous life.

It's interesting how happy you feel after a good workout session, isn't it. The sun seems to shine more brightly, the wind seems to blow more sweetly, the grass rustles more musically... I guess it's just the satisfaction of knowing you've worked out your body...there must be a link between physical exercise and mental wellbeing..

Keep on with your regime - it's great to be inspired by a fellow gymmer!

Julie from Scandinavia, how are you? Thanks for visiting my diary even though I've been so neglectful with other diaries lately. You are doing freaking fantastic! I am inspired to get to the gym seeing your commitment. I'd like to lose 15 pounds in the next 8 weeks...probably a lofty goal, but I can still get to the gym on a daily basis. I'm going to jog because I find that causes weight loss more than the elliptical trainer, much as I love that machine.

Carry on, as you were, and Romeo is lucky!

Hi Juliette. It's nice to see that your week is off to such a good start. It is great enjoying the sun and relaxing when you know you've already had a great workout - well even if you haven't - but even better when you know you're taking great care of your body! :) I hope the BBQ was as much fun as you deserve too. :)

geesh woman get away from that paperwork. YOU'RE ON HOLIDAY!!!! :D
just kidding, i know what its like not to be left alone on holidays, but hey that's life for ya.
i hope you have fun at that barbecue and i hope you meet an incredible human being who will sweep you of your feet :D

What a busy day both here in my diary :) and also here in my real life :rolleyes:...
Got the paperwork almost done, just a little bit of actual writing (with pen and paper!!!) to do tomorrow (in the sun, I think). Got a good start for the work that needs to be done for the master-class and went out for a little run, just 5+ km, but it was too hot for more anyway.
The barbecue was GREAT. Picture this: seashore, grill, 25C, yummy food (not TOO bad for my diet), four girls in bikinis. :D
I feel truly relaxed!

Thanks Rho for stopping by. My diary has been well attended even when I was away. ;)
Aaah, the world of endorphines.. But there's also the purely psychological thing, I guess you could call it good conscience, when you know you've done your exercise for the day and there's no need to think about that until tomorrow. :)

Hi Anna! I'm fine, no, right now I'm feeling a bit tired but otherwise very happy. It's been such a good weather here the last few days that I just had to go for a run outdoors today. It's just a pity there's no chance of weight training outdoors.. But I guess I can handle two hours inside tomorrow. :cool:
BTW, there's no Romeo at the moment. Maybe I wil meet him Monday (oh, that was today, well then) maybe Tuesday will be my good news day.. YouTube - Ella Fitzgerald ad Ronnie Scott's 1974 - The Man I Love

Oh, I forgot, me and one of my friends went swimming in the sea when we were waiting for the grill to be ready. Temperature of the water an amazing 14 degrees. Felt warmer though, I had absolutely no difficulty going in and swimming, but I didn't stay for too long.
You know, Felici, I actually had no difficulty being there in a bikini (with several other groups of people nearby) and even taking off my bikini top for swimming (it takes ages to dry..). I know that my body is not really THAT much better than last summer, but I just feel better about it now that I work for it more. Yey!

i hope you have fun at that barbecue and i hope you meet an incredible human being who will sweep you of your feet :D

Oh Lena, I hope so too. We just discussed going out, bar/night-club kind, to celebrate the new tobacco law, which banned totally smoking in bars, restaurants and night-clubs. I'm so allergic to tobacco smoke that I haven't really been able to join my friends for a long time. And now IT'S POSSIBLE! So maybe meeting people could be easier now. Going only to work, grocery store, library and metro (subway) haven't really done the trick. ;)
I'll try to do some diary reading before I go to bed. This day has been so full of everything that I'm sleepy already..
Have nice evening, everybody!
Julie

The BBQ sounds fantastic! I know you had some fun. Thanks for the laugh in my diary & I'll have to check my insurance to see if it covers your services! :)

It sure looks like you have a good program set up. Starting next week, I'm going from doing weights 2 times a week to 3 times a week, just like you. I hope if I'm ever in Scandinavia, you'll invite me to one of your BBQ's! :)

WOW chickie your working out like a mad women, I better get busy or you'll be sporting that 140 look in no time. YOUR DOING SO GOOD!! way to go!!
Kim

I'm sure it does, I'm very inexpensive and give a wide range of services starting with making you laugh and going from making you cry all the way to making you sleep. My methods include insane logic, roller coaster of life and sheer boringness. Plus I'm an absolute ace in explaining things everybody knows already. Just ask my family for references. :D
PS. Can we have a seminar covering the topic of "Talking Food - Menace of Our Time"? I ran into some of that myself yesterday evening... :(

Oh, I will! Think you can handle grilled corn, fresh mushrooms stuffed with herbs and cheese (low-fat, vegetable oil based cheese spread), rolled in some bacon (ok, but there's only a tiddy biddy bit of bacon, to keep the mushroom moist in the grill), skewers with courgette, mini tomatoes and new potatoes, and fresh strawberries for dessert?
It will be good to compare notes with our gym schedules. AND there's the "I can't not follow my program, since he'll see that" effect. ;) I sometimes find that's needed for extra motivation...

Thanks Kim! :hug2:
I'm kinda ashamed to read that in my diary, because things didnt' go quite the way I had planned them AFTER I turned off my computer last night.
I was ok with what I ate at the barbecue. As I came home I thought of trying to count the calories and the nutrients, but decided against it, since it would have been totally impossible to estimate the amounts of everything. I was terribly thirsty the whole evening and drank loads of water, and was quite happy until I thought it was time to say farewell to all of you here and go to bed.
I wasn't sleepy at all at that point, and decided to sit in front of the tv for a while. That's when I noticed that I was actually hungry. So I decided to eat some bread (rye, whole grain), cheese and tomatoes. All good. Except it didn't end there. In the end the worst thing I ate was three small chocolate sweets, but what bothered me was that I ate many things (healthy foods) that 1) weren't on my menu for yesterday and 2) were just too much all put together. I went to bed (finally) very adamant to leave that kind of behaviour behind and start fresh this morning.
I'm wondering if I maybe had a mild sunstroke, because I was feeling really cold when I went to bed and I woke up in the middle of the night, after having terrible nightmares, feeling very strange. Fortunately I'm fine now, so no long term harm done. Just funny to experience something like that for the first time in my life at 33... :eek:
This morning shed some light to my behaviour last night. Oh, the wonders of female hormones... I truly hope my period really starts today for good (and not a week later, like last time, the whole week being like this) and this urge to save the human species by eating goes the same way it came.
I'm trying to go to the gym for a weight-training session today, if I'm not in pain later in the afternoon. I opted against the originally planned class, since it's not really comfortable just now. There's a good class tomorrow, so I'm just modifying my program a bit. If I don't feel painless enough for weight-training in the afternoon, I just go for a longish walk, I've been missing those lately.
An aspiring wasp has chosen my balcony ceiling as the home ground http://upload.wikimedia.org/wikipedia/commons/e/e8/WaspBuildingNest_wb.jpg and right now there's a fresh smell of insecticide floating around. Last time (of two in total) I got stung by a wasp in my upper arm, it doubled in size and I was on cortisone and antibiotics before I could say EEEEEK! I'm not taking any chances. If the reaction in me keeps getting worse and a stupid wasp chooses my neck, I'm in bad trouble.
Anyway, a long post, hope you're still awake there. :rolleyes:
Even more later...
Julie
