Journey, Not A Destination

Hernias suck! That is a tough question, and I really think it depends on what you want. Really, after a hernia surgery, you are not allowed to do any heavy lifting for quite a while. Chances are, it is going to be tough to keep the weight off. Possible? Certainly. But you are going to have to monitor your nutrition like a son of a gun since you will not be as active at all. That said, if I were you, I would get it done sooner rather than later. Did the doc say you NEED to have it done?

Thanks, coach. When we're in SF, I'll be seeing a close friend who's also a great doctor, and she's the only doctor I totally trust. I'll see what she says about it. It looks like hell, but I'm way past the age where vanity does me a whole lot of good -- so if I don't have to fix it, I definitely won't.

I'll look forward to your assessment of the NROL programs. The starting program is actually not that different than the one you have me on.

A prone leg press -- now that's quite a vision! :)

The ultimate personal trainer exercise -- leg presses on a prone leg press on top of a Swiss ball.

*sobbing* don't yell at me! I only used it 2 times....:( What's so terrible about it?

Locks you into a fixed plane of motion, dictated by the machine, and not your individual biomechanics. Not a problem acutely, but keeping using it chronically and it can lead to microtraumas.

And sorry for yelling.

Hi Steve; one of these days I'm going to read your whole journal, but for now just want to say hi! I don't like machines either. When I use free weights, watching myself in the mirror results in slower and more controlled reps. I like the connection between the movement and seeing my muscle in the mirror...sort of like instant gratification of sorts.
Hope you have a good day!

Hey, thanks for stopping in.

I just think far too many people think that machines are an alternative to free weights. While they ARE, they are certainly not equal when it comes to efficacy.

Nothing is superior to free weights.

Apology accepted  I had no idea--Ok, it's "Free Weight Valerie" from now on.

Squats and deadlifts are plenty, all of your leg muscles come into play with these exercises.

I thought you were going to say that. ;) In actuality, my body is already plenty toned--what's happening is, as I lose the body fat, I can see the muscle much better. So I really think I'm doing fine, and I'm excited about losing another 5 lbs of (hopefully all) fat and checking out the results. I'm getting down there! I know you say a plateau is highly likely, but I'm just keeping that in mind while telling myself "it ain't gonna happen. I WILL get to my goal without too much issue." No offense, I just have to psyche myself up. I'm so close I can taste it...

Oh, don't listen to me! I can't tell you WHEN you will plateau. It could be another 10 lbs for all I know, or you know. Just know that it WILL happen eventually.
